Tour de France Marinelli dies at 99

Observer2 days ago
PARIS: French cyclist Jacques Marinelli, the oldest surviving holder of the Tour de France yellow jersey, has died aged 99.
On the eve of the start of the 112th Tour de France in Lille, race director Christian Prudhomme on Friday paid tribute to a rider, nicknamed "the parakeet", who was one of the legends of the race.
"I can still hear my father talking about the Parakeet. He was the oldest of the Tour de France's yellow jerseys. A part of the Tour de France's history is going with him," Prudhomme said.
Aged 23, during the 1949 Tour dominated by cycling greats Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali, Marinelli took the yellow jersey on the fourth stage in Rouen which he wore for six days until the Pyrenees.
"I was in good shape, that's all I knew. But I didn't even dream of the yellow jersey," he recalled during an interview with AFP in 2019.
All of France was fascinated by the exploits of the diminutive Marinelli, who stood just 1.60 metres (5ft 3in) and weighed 50 kilos, in contrast to the legendary Italian "heron" Coppi, the eventual winner.
Marinelli finished third in Paris, behind the two Italian champions, and was greeted by a huge crowd in the capital.
"The yellow jersey allowed me to have a tap with running water in my family's house," Marinelli liked to say.
His popularity would serve him well throughout the rest of his life, establishing himself as one of the largest retailers in his region, and becoming mayor of his home town. — AFP

Campbell wins John Deere Classic title

WASHINGTON: Brian Campbell parred the first hole of a sudden death playoff to beat Emilio Grillo and claim his second US PGA Tour title of 2025 at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois. Campbell, 32 had won his first PGA title at the Mexico Open in February, reward for grinding his way back onto the tour after injuries threatened to derail his career after his rookie season back in 2017. He and Argentina's Grillo both carded four-under-par 67s on Sunday to finish 72 holes on 18-under 266 at TPC Deere Run. For the playoff they returned to the par-four 18th, where Campbell's second shot from the fairway landed 16 feet from the pin. Grillo's tee shot was in the right rough and his second shot came out hot, racing through the green. His chip back left him a 23-footer from just off the green and after he failed to make it, Campbell calmly stepped up and two-putted for the win. "Right now it's surreal," said Campbell, who attended college in Illinois and made his first PGA Tour start in this event. "It all started here as an amateur, my first invite here ... I have no words. To let alone be in a playoff and to finish it off this way has just been amazing." Campbell who also won his Mexico title in a playoff, had a two-shot lead after rolling in a 14-foot putt at the 13th for his fifth birdie of the day. He dropped one adrift with a double-bogey at the 15th, but was back on top by one after a birdie at 17. Behind him Grillo reached 18-under with an eight-foot birdie at the 17th -- his fifth birdie of the day, and the Argentinian nearly seized the victory at the 72nd hole where his 37-foot birdie putt was an inch wide. "I played well, that's all I can do," he said. "I got myself there, I gave myself a chance," added Grillo, whose two tour titles both came in playoffs. David Lipsky, chasing his first tour title, played in the last group and was tied for the lead on 18-under after rolling in an eight-fot eagle putt at the 17th. But he missed out on the playoff after a bogey at 18. He was tied for third with Kevin Roy, who had six birdies in his six-under 65. Max Homa closed with a 69 to head a group of six players tied on 268. — AFP

Djokovic, Cobolli to Wimbledon quarterfinals

LONDON: Novak Djokovic overcame a sluggish start against Alex de Minaur to reach his 16th Wimbledon quarterfinal under the gaze of eight-time winner Roger Federer on Monday. The Serb was lethargic and unusually tentative in the early stages of his last 16 match against the Australian 11th seed on Centre Court but eventually found his rhythm to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. It keeps the seven-time champion on track for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam, which would be the crowning achievement of an astonishing career. If he wins the crown on Sunday, the 38-year-old would also draw level with Federer's record of eight men's titles at the All England Club. The retired Swiss great watched from the royal box as his long-time rival was given his toughest test of the tournament so far. Sixth seed Djokovic was broken in the first game and conceded two more breaks as De Minaur ran away with the first set. The Serb committed 16 unforced errors, including four double faults in the opener. Djokovic broke immediately at the start of the second set but then became bogged down in a game lasting nearly 19 minutes, which De Minaur won on his sixth break point. Italy's Flavio Cobolli in action. — Reuters Both players struggled to hold onto their serve in an attritional battle but Djokovic, pleading for support from the crowd, held his nerve to level the match, letting out a roar as De Minaur went long. The third set went with serve until the ninth game, when De Minaur skewed a forehand wide to concede the crucial break. De Minaur found new inspiration in the fourth set, surging into a 4-1 lead but crumbled at the pivotal moment as Djokovic fought back, reeling off five games in a row to seal the win. COBOLLI ADVANCES Flavio Cobolli marched into the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Monday, leading a dashing Italian advance by snuffing out the once-lethal Marin Cilic in a statement win that lit up a sunny but breezy Court Two. Wielding his bright orange racket like a fluorescent sabre, the 23-year-old carved through the Croatian's defences to win 6-4 6-4 6-7(4) 7-6(3), lighting the way for compatriots Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego. Both hope to follow him through later in the day and set a Wimbledon record of three Italian men into the last eight. Djokovic will play Italian 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli in the last eight, with a potential semifinal looming against world number one Jannik Sinner. — Agencies

Djokovic into last 16 at Wimbledon, Krejcikova crashes

LONDON: Seven-times champion Novak Djokovic scored his 100th match win at Wimbledon and led the march of the old guard into the last 16 on Saturday while an ailing Barbora Krejcikova's title defence ended in defeat and tears. World number one Jannik Sinner was at his ruthless best yet again as the Italian gathered momentum in his quest for a maiden All England Club title while American Ben Shelton and Australian Alex de Minaur announced themselves as dark horses. Djokovic is on an altogether different plane as he looks to capture his eighth title to match Roger Federer's record on the pristine lawns of London and his 25th major overall to surpass Margaret Court on the all-time list of champions. The 38-year-old showed exactly why Wimbledon could be his best chance of achieving the elusive targets when the 2023 and 2024 runner-up dismantled Davis Cup teammate Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-0 6-4 in a little under two hours. A tonne of victories put him among elite company as the sixth seed became only the third player to achieve that feat at the tournament after nine-times champion Martina Navratilova and Swiss great Federer. "Wimbledon is a favourite and a dream tournament for not just myself, but probably the majority of players. Growing up, most of the kids dream of playing here and winning here," Djokovic said. Grigor Dimitrov, the Bulgarian 34-year-old, also scored his 100th match win across the four Grand Slams when he quelled the challenge of Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-4 7-6(0). Joining him was fellow veteran Marin Cilic, the Croatian 36-year-old getting past spirited Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-4 to book a meeting with Italian 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli who took apart big-serving Czech teenager Jakub Mensik 6-2 6-4 6-2. While Cobolli may not be relishing a meeting with the tricky Cilic, his compatriot Sinner will welcome the chance to test his metronomic hitting against Dimitrov's elegant approach in what promises to be a classic. SUBLIME SINNER A sublime Sinner booked that clash with a 6-1 6-3 6-1 hammering of Pedro Martinez. The top seed, who has lost just 17 games in his first three matches, equalled the professional era record for fewest games dropped to make the Wimbledon fourth round along the way. After the unexpected high of last year's title triumph, Krejcikova came crashing down when she was beaten 2-6 6-3 6-4 by American 10th seed Emma Navarro in a disjointed Court One contest. The distressed 29-year-old Czech, who has endured her share of injuries this season, was in tears as she prepared to serve to stay in the tournament at 3-5 in the deciding set before eventually crashing out. Krejcikova's exit and 2022 champion Elena Rybakina's 7-6(6) 6-3 defeat by Danish powerhouse Clara Tauson means a first-time women's champion will be crowned at the Grand Slam for the eighth consecutive year. Iga Swiatek will hope she can be the one after the five-times major champion secured a 6-2 6-3 victory over American Danielle Collins, whose compatriot Hailey Baptiste crashed to 18-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva 6-1 6-3. Shelton gave Americans something to smile about when the powerful left-hander made quick work of Hungarian lucky loser Marton Fucsovics 6-3 7-6(4) 6-2 while De Minaur swatted aside Dane August Holmgren 6-4 7-6(5) 6-3 to go through. — Reuters
