Lidl launches 'dream' bakery item we ate in the '00s — and it's only 59p
The supermarket's latest addition to its bakery shelves is serving a hit of nostalgia, recreating an iconic school dinner treat.
The brand has announced the launch of School Cake, which features vanilla-flavoured sponge and is topped with buttercream and rainbow sprinkles – and it's already a hit with shoppers.
A slice will cost you a measly 59p but you'll need to hurry to get your fix, because it's only available in stores across the country until June 11.
Shared on Instagram page @uknewestfoods, it received rave reviews, while others were desperate to grab themselves a slice.
'Just eaten two of these with my lunch, oops! Delicious,' wrote one.
@mareenrufasa said: 'Omg my dreams of eating this again might just become a reality.'
'I want some,' said another, while one added: 'Hell yeah! I'll buy a whole tray haha.'
Others on TikTok rated it a '10/10′, with TikToker Cerys Nelmes saying: 'I cried whilst eating it with custard.'
But not everyone was pleased with Lidl's version of the classic dinner lady treat, pointing out one glaring issue.
'Doesn't look much like traditional old school cake, that's more of a butter cream frosting on top rather than icing,' wrote one on the Snack Reviews Facebook group.
'Can tell from the photo that the icing is too thick and the size of the cake is way too small… It's not the same,' added another.
Kacey-lea Cook said: 'Yeahh that frosting doesn't look right at all, I'll passssss.'
Others simply weren't impressed with the product or value for money. One claimed it 'doesn't taste great' while another said 'they were too sweet'.
Social media user @_tanikka210_ said on Instagram: 'Wish they were slightly bigger for the price, at my local Lidl the slices look so small for 59p each.'
The retailer's bakery has a cult-like following, and last year was crowned the nation's favourite, beating rivals like Tesco and Sainsbury's.
And this School Cake isn't the only treat to cause a stir. Hot off the heels of the Mini Egg Brownie and Cinnamon Bun Blondie, the Cheesecake Brownie has been getting fans excited too.
But you'll need to be quick, as what the Lidl Lord giveth, he sadly taketh away, and the Cheesecake Brownie is only available until May 28.
Amassing over 52,000 likes on TikTok, it was a huge hit when it was first released in 2024, with shoppers drooling over its fudge brownie base, cheesecake layer and rich chocolate drizzle. More Trending
'I'm not a brownie lover but OMG they are moreish, delicious, soft, rich, chocolatey, then a hit of cheesecake,' said Jenny Jacombs on Facebook. 'Grab one if you can.'
'These are the best things ever to come out of Lidl,' added Holly Hart.

So why not pick up both when you're next in store and see which makes your taste buds tingle.
Amy Reid, who runs the blog Baking With Granny, has shared a recipe for school cake which includes just seven ingredients.
But, one of the most important things to remember is to let the cake completely cool before adding the icing – otherwise it won't set and will run off your bake.
Below is the recipe from Baking with Granny's blog…
Sprinkles to decorate
280g margarine (at room temperature)
280g caster sugar
5 free-range eggs (at room temperature)
280g self-raising flour
300g icing sugar
Few teaspoons of boiling water
1. Pre-heat your oven to 180°c (160°c for fan assisted oven or Gas Mark 4) and a 9×12 inch baking tin with greaseproof paper. Set aside.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Add the eggs one at time, ensuring each is mixed through before adding the next.
4. Sift in the flour and gently fold to create a batter.
5. Transfer the batter to your pre-lined tin and bake in your pre-heated oven for 50-60 minutes until risen, golden and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
6. Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
7. Once your cake has cooled completely, in a bowl, mix the icing sugar with a few teaspoons of boiling water, adding a little water at time until you have a thick pouring consistency. Pour the icing onto your cake, using a spoon to guide it to the edges. Finish with some rainbow sprinkles.

Black Sabbath pay tribute to Ozzy Osbourne following death
Black Sabbath members have been honouring their late bandmate Ozzy Osbourne in a series of tributes. Osbourne died yesterday (July 22) at the age of 76 with his family at his side and 'surrounded by love'. The band's bassist Terence 'Geezer' Butler has said he was 'so glad' the band reunited with Osbourne one final time, just a few weeks ago. In a post on Instagram, Butler paid tribute to his long-time bandmate and friend, reflecting on their last performance together during a farewell concert at Birmingham's Villa Park earlier this month. 'Thanks for all those years- we had some great fun. 4 kids from Aston- who'd have thought, eh?' he captioned an Instagram post. 'So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston. Love you.' The emotional tribute came as bandmates Bill Ward and Tony Iommi also expressed their grief. Iommi, the band's guitarist, said he was 'devastated' by the news. 'It's just such heartbreaking news that I can't really find the words, there won't ever be another like him,' he wrote on Instagram. 'Geezer, Bill and myself have lost our brother.' Ward, Black Sabbath's drummer, posted a photo of himself and Osbourne on X, writing: 'Where will I find you now? In the memories, our unspoken embraces, our missed phone calls… no, you're forever in my heart.' Black Sabbath went on to become one of the most influential and successful metal bands of all time, selling more than 75 million albums worldwide. The group were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and Osbourne was added for a second time last year. What was Ozzy Osbourne diagnosed with? In 2020, Osbourne revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and he paused touring in 2023 after extensive spinal surgery. He had a fall at home in 2019, which aggravated injuries from a near-fatal quad bike crash in 2003, stopping his No More Tours 2 shows from going ahead in Europe and the UK. The tour had previously been rescheduled several times because of illness, the Covid-19 pandemic and logistical issues. He told Good Morning America in January 2020 that it was discovered he had the neurodegenerative disorder after a fall. He said: 'I did my last show New Year's Eve at The Forum. Then I had a bad fall. I had to have surgery on my neck, which screwed all my nerves and I found out that I have a mild form.'

Brooklyn Beckham sparks fury over his comment on wife Nicola's naked bathtub snap
Nicola Peltz has shared a photo over herself completely naked to Instagram and Brooklyn's public response to it has not gone down well with fans. Brooklyn Beckham has been criticised by fans over a comment he made on his wife's jaw-dropping naked photo on Instagram. Nicola Peltz, 30, left very little to imagination when she uploaded a completely nude picture of her posing in the bathtub to social media earlier today. The American actress captioned the saucy snap: "Best memories" which she uploaded along with a series of other posey pictures from their holiday. Devoted hubby Brooklyn, 26, gushed in the comment section: "I took the photo in the bath" along with a love heart. However, fans have been left unimpressed with his response, with several calling him out in the comments. Pointing out that his reply was 'totally unnecessary', one joked: "Hey, every time we know you took the photo, don't have to say it every time." Meanwhile, a third wrote: "He has no choice! He has to do everything she says." A fourth user commented: "We get it, you guys love each other. Maybe spend more time telling each other than telling the world." However, there were some more positive responses to Nicola's racy snap, the Mirror reports. One wrote: "Some nasty comments from jealous people! Wow ... be better. They're a beautiful young couple who happen to be rich ! Good luck to them I say." It comes as the ongoing feud between the Peltz Beckhams and the rest of the Beckham clan continues to fire on. Brooklyn and Nicola have shown no signs of reaching out to David and Victoria after a string of brutal snubs throughout the year. This includes their decision to body swerve all of David's 50th celebrations in May and his failure to acknowledge his father's knighthood. Brooklyn and his younger brothers, Romeo and Cruz, also do not follow each other on Instagram as rumours of in-fighting between the siblings continue to swirl. While their fall out battles on, Brooklyn's godfather, Sir Elton John, has reportedly stepped in to try and initiate some peace after hosting the wannabe chef and Nicola in Cannes. The RocketMan icon recently took the young couple for lunch in the celebrity mecca alongside husband David Furnish. The meet up reportedly took place at the upscale La Guerite beach club, where the group reportedly discussed the strained family dynamics. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Despite the 76-year-old previously leaning into his own celebrity rivalries, such as his past feud with Madonna, those close to him say he's now more interested in maintaining peace. The source claimed: 'Elton of old may have relished in taking sides - in this case his young godson, Brooklyn, but two years off his 80th birthday, he's a man who has seen and done it all. "He just wants everyone to be happy."

Victoria Beckham sends olive branch to son Brooklyn as Sir Elton John intervenes to fix family feud
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) VICTORIA Beckham has sent an olive branch to son Brooklyn amid the family's bitter feud. The rift between Brooklyn, his American actress wife Nicola Peltz, 30, and the Beckhams has seemingly widened over the past few months. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 5 Victoria Beckham has liked son Brooklyn's latest reel Credit: Instagram 5 Victoria Beckham puts on a leggy display as she celebrates birthday on yacht-Instagram Credit: Instagram But matriarch Victoria, 51, has liked Brooklyn's latest Instagram reel showing him rustling up pasta in the kitchen, suggesting tensions could be thawing. In the video, budding chef Brooklyn, 26, rustles up tomato pasta on a yacht, using a pan of seawater to cook his spaghetti. It follows an intervention from Sir Elton John, who is Brooklyn's godfather and also close pals with David, 50, and Victoria. The legendary singer, 78, has publicly praised Brooklyn and Nicola on social media while the feud has been making headlines, and he has even hung out with them in Cannes. The couple were seen with Elton's husband, David Furnish, at the La Guerite, with other guests including music producer Andrew Watt who worked with Elton on his latest album. We revealed Elton 'briefly' touched on the family feud before sticking to more neutral territory. 'Elton is the showbiz equivalent of Switzerland,' said a source. 'He's utterly neutral in this row. 'Elton of old may have relished in taking sides - in this case his young godson, Brooklyn - but two years off his 80th birthday, he's a man who has seen and done it all. 'He just wants everyone to be happy. There is no side-taking as such; he simply adores his godson, and really has a laugh with Nicola who he thinks has a great sense of humour. "He wants to look after them in his role as 'spiritual adviser' as a godfather, it's a role he takes seriously. 'Elton and David think the situation is terribly sad, and has gently suggested to all involved that life is short — and to patch things up. 'They had a really fun long lunch in the South of France, where Elton and David have a beautiful villa, and besides a very brief chat on the subject that dare rear its name, they discussed loads of other, much more lighthearted matters. "Elton has said his bit - he is adamant he doesn't want to stick his nose in and p*** off either party. He just wants peace.' Perhaps Victoria is making moves to smooth relations ahead of the October release of her Netflix documentary. It is understood she will not touch on the feud - although she has promised there will be 'tears' in the four-parter. Nicola and Brooklyn will not be in it — but that is because no scenes were filmed with them. A source added: 'The children hardly feature — it's simply not a case of Brooklyn and Nicola being cut, as they weren't in it to start with. 5 Nicola joined Brooklyn, Elton and husband David Furnish at La Guerite beach club 5 Generous Elton is understood to have picked up the tab for the party of six at the fancy spot 5 Elton doesn't want to take sides but thinks the Beckhams' feud is 'terribly sad' Credit: Instagram "This is very much a project focusing on Victoria's transaction from pop star to businesswoman and designer.' Younger Beckham boys Cruz and Romeo were recently accused of turning their backs on Brooklyn for good, sending the family deeper into crisis. It came after fans spotted the siblings had blocked their elder brother on social media. A source said: 'Blocking or unfollowing someone on Instagram is like the Gen Z version of World War Three. It's a sad new low. 'But the truth is, Brooklyn has cut out his parents David and Victoria from his life and it's the same with Romeo and Cruz. "Even when the family have reached out to Brooklyn they have been ignored. 'He's not had contact for months and it feels clear to them that he doesn't want to make amends.' The feud, which The Sun understands started over money, has been bubbling for several months.
