KOLKATA: An IT-sector employee, and his brother, were arrested by Baguiati cops for theft of items worth Rs 5 lakh from the former's girlfriend's residence at Deshabandhu Nagar in Baguiati.
Accused Shyamcharan Das reportedly took advantage of his girlfriend's business trip to Sikkim and gave the rented flat's keys to his brother Ramcharan, asking him to steal gold jewellery.
He directed his brother to the exact spots where the gold was kept in the flat that he often visited. Shyamcharan himself travelled to Sikkim to meet his girlfriend, ensuring he was not seen as a suspect.
By the time the trip was over and the theft was discovered on May 30, the woman lodged an FIR against the servants of the building.
However, cops checked CCTV footage and identified Shyamcharan's scooty at the crime scene. It was being used by Ramcharan. "On being questioned, Shyamcharan confessed to planning the crime," said an officer.
Shyamcharan borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from the victim and was under pressure to return the money. He planned to sell the jewellery to return the loan and pocket the rest. Shyamcharan and Ramcharan often visited the flat, and no one suspected their involvement.

The victim, who has been in a relationship with Shyamcharan for two years, is also from East Midnapore.

Man injured as iron rod from metro bridge under construction falls on autorickshaw

A 20-year-old man sustained critical head injuries on Tuesday when a long iron rod from an under-construction Metro Line 5 bridge fell on an autorickshaw he was travelling in Bhiwandi. The accident happened at around 2 pm at Vitthal Nagar, where the civil work for the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro line is being carried out. As per the police and onlookers, a tie rod of about 7 to 8 feet long and 20 mm in diameter came crashing down straight from the raised structure onto the passing autorickshaw. The rod came through the autorickshaw's roof and struck passenger Sonu Ali on the head. The local residents rushed Ali, who became unconscious, to a hospital where he is being treated. Bhiwandi's Bhoiwada Police are investigating the incident to determine whether negligence led to the mishap. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the developing authority of Metro Line 5, imposed a fine Rs 50 lakh on civil contractor Afcons and Rs 5 lakh penalty on general consultant Systra-CEG-Systra India for supervisory deficiencies. Expressing regret over the incident, the MMRDA said in a statement, 'A tie rod, installed as part of the temporary support system to deck slab structure two months ago, unexpectedly fell onto an autorickshaw. A passenger suffered a head injury as a result.' 'MMRDA has ordered Afcons to cover all the medical costs and extend due support to the affected person,' an official said. The development authority has also set up an independent panel headed by the Chief Safety Manager of AICA, the overall consultant for Metro Line 2B, to probe the cause of the accident. A similar accident had happened in 2021 when five people were injured after an iron structure collapsed at Anjurphata during pillar construction for Metro Line 5.

SC cancels bail granted to DHFL promoter in loan scam case, directs him to surrender in two weeks

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday cancelled bail granted to former DHFL promoter Dheeraj Wadhawan in the multi-crore bank loan scam case. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma passed the order after perusing the report filed by a medical board and directed Wadhawan to surrender within two weeks. The Delhi High Court on September 9, 2024 granted him bail on medical grounds saying Wadhawan fell within the parameters of a "sick person". The order came on an appeal filed by the CBI appeal against the high court order. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the agency, had earlier said said Wadhawan suffered from no serious medical ailments and huge amounts of money were siphoned off in the case. The Wadhawan brothers -- Kapil and Dheeraj-- were arrested in this case in July 2022. The agency filed a chargesheet in October 2022 following which a court took its cognisance. The FIR was registered on a complaint made by the Union Bank of India , which alleged DHFL, the housing finance company's then chairman-cum-managing director Kapil Wadhawan , then director Dheeraj Wadhawan and other accused entered into a criminal conspiracy to cheat the consortium of 17 banks led by the Union Bank of India, and in pursuance of the criminal conspiracy, the accused and others induced the consortium to sanction huge loans aggregating Rs 42,871.42 crore. Much of the amount was allegedly siphoned off and misappropriated by alleged falsification of the books of the DHFL and dishonest default in repayment of legitimate dues of the consortium banks, the CBI claimed.
