How Does Speed Affect EV Range?

How Does Speed Affect EV Range?

Car and Driver4 days ago
We ran two EVs, along with a gas-powered compact SUV, around a test track to measure how cruising speed affects range.
The difference between 55 mph and 75 mph was a drop of 88 miles of range in the Lucid Air sedan and 109 miles in the Kia EV9 SUV.
As speeds rise, range decreases at an increasing rate; when traveling at speeds of 75 mph or above, you're unlikely to achieve the range figure on the window sticker in an EV.
Welcome to Car and Driver's Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We've been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here).
Vehicles, whether electric or gas, have to work harder against the passing air as speeds rise, as aerodynamic resistance increases dramatically (with the square of speed). But to see how that plays out in the real world, we gathered two very different EVs—a low-slung Lucid Air Pure sedan and a blocky Kia EV9 three-row SUV. We also included a Subaru Forester as a mainstream gas-powered compact SUV for comparison purposes.
To minimize any effects of elevation, wind, or traffic, we used the 4.7-mile oval test track at Stellantis's Chelsea Proving Grounds. We ran each car at four speeds: 35 mph, 55 mph, 75 mph, and 95 mph, and used each vehicle's indicated consumption or fuel economy to calculate an estimated range figure. (While a vehicle's onboard computer may not be perfectly accurate, we trust the differences in consumption between the test speeds to be precise, and the figures at 75 mph during this test are in line with our in-depth highway range testing.)

Steady-state driving in an EV is the worst-case scenario for range, because there's no ability to coast or use regenerative braking to harvest energy and boost consumption. This is part of the reason EVs tend to get much lower range figures on our 75-mph highway range test than their EPA range figures, because even the EPA highway cycle includes a lot of speed changes that EVs can use to recoup energy.

It's all downhill for range as speed increases, as the difference between 35 mph and 55 mph was a 22 percent drop in range for the Air (485 miles to 378) and 26 percent worse in the EV9 (459 miles to 339). Interestingly, the Forester's range only dropped 9 percent between those speeds, likely due to its additional gearing that can keep the engine operating in an efficient zone.
Each additional 20-mph increment reduces range at an increasing rate. No surprise that the more aerodynamic Air does better at higher speeds, with a 23 percent drop between 55 and 75 mph and a 24 percent drop between 75 and 95 mph. The EV9, on the other hand, plummets more than 30 percent between each of those increments. But the EV9 doesn't frown on high-speed driving, as it was the only vehicle that still allowed us to set the cruise control at 95 mph.
We fit a cubic equation to our data, which is a good match with aero loading, to be able to estimate what steady-state cruising speed aligns with each vehicle's EPA range figures. For the Lucid Air, it's a mere 47 mph to achieve its 419-mile range figure. But the window-sticker number is a combined figure, and—although it doesn't appear on the label—there's also an EPA highway figure. For the Lucid, its 410-mile EPA highway range matches a marginally higher cruising speed of 49 mph. Based on our previous highway range tests on Lucids, we already knew the company is very aggressive in its label values for its vehicles, and this is further evidence. The Kia EV9's range figures are much more highway-friendly, with 66 mph equating to its 280-mile EPA combined figure and 71 mph to match its 253-mile EPA highway number. Meanwhile, you can equal the Forester's 465-mile EPA combined range (28 mpg) cruising at 77 mph.

Steady-State Cruising Speed That Equates to EPA Combined Range
Lucid Air Pure: 47 mph
Kia EV9: 66 mph
Subaru Forester: 77 mph
This vast discrepancy in the real-world performance of gas-powered versus electric cars compared with their window-sticker values could cause first-time EV buyers to be unpleasantly surprised by their vehicle's range in certain scenarios. Noticing this trend in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy and range testing data is what caused us to write an SAE technical paper on the topic.
When talking about highway speeds, the difference between 55 mph and 75 mph is a loss of 88 miles of range in the Lucid Air and 109 miles in the Kia EV9. Bumping up the cruising speed from 70 to 80 mph reduces the Air's range by about 40 miles and the EV9's by roughly 45. Then again, the same 10-mph increase in the Subaru Forester drops the range even more, about 100 miles. But part of the issue is that EVs start with less range to begin with; at 80 mph, the Forester still has more than double the range of the EV9 and about 175 miles more range than the Air.

Repealing rule to curb greenhouse gas emissions will increase gas prices, Trump administration's own analysis finds

When the Environmental Protection Agency announced it would roll back regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions — especially from motor vehicles — it touted annual savings for Americans of $54 billion. The EPA said eliminating Biden-era policies, which encouraged higher fuel efficiency standards for cars and electric vehicle adoption to limit tailpipe emissions, would enable consumers to "have affordable choices when deciding to buy a car." But a CBS News review of the agency's own regulatory impact analysis of the proposal found that gasoline prices would increase, and nearly a half million jobs would be lost by 2035, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Agency, which was cited in the EPA's report. In the EPA's July analysis, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which collects and analyzes energy data, showed Biden-era policies that were adopted by the end of 2024 would dramatically bring down the future cost of gasoline because more consumers would be driving electric vehicles, hybrids and fuel-efficient cars that require less gas. It is challenging to predict the future gas prices because they're subject to high uncertainty and market volatility, but under a future scenario where Biden-era policies have been revoked under the Trump administration, the EIA projects gasoline prices will continue to increase because of a higher demand for gas-powered cars and fuel. The former administrator of the EIA, Joseph DeCarolis, explained in an email that if the government "disincentivizes electric vehicle purchases, more consumers will purchase gasoline vehicles resulting in higher gasoline consumption and high gasoline prices for everyone." "There's a clear causal connection between rescinding measures promoting electric vehicles, such as EPA tailpipe standards, and the projection of higher gasoline prices," he said. When asked in an interview with CBS News' "The Takeout with Major Garrett" about how this plan could raise gas prices, Zeldin did not directly address the question. Instead, he argued that previous policies like an electric vehicle mandate were costing trillions of dollars to regulate climate pollution, saying the policies were "seeking to strangulate out of existence, entire sectors of our economy, and specifically our energy economy. 'It's important that we are applying common sense," Zeldin said, "that we are cognizant of these economic demands and that, wherever possible, when we can protect the environment and grow the economy that we will choose both." Neither the Biden nor Obama administrations implemented EV mandates, though both encouraged EV adoptions by Americans and businesses. Zeldin reiterated the Trump administration's stance that the EPA does not have the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act unless an act of Congress changes that. "Here's my message: If Congress wants the EPA to be regulating the heck out of carbon dioxide, well, they could put it inside of law," Zeldin said. Along with rolling back greenhouse gas emissions standards to limit tailpipe emissions, the EPA would also rescind fuel efficiency measures. Under Biden-era fuel efficiency policies, a new standard gas-powered car was expected to get 47.1 miles per gallon by 2027, and by 2035, cars were expected to achieve 61.2 mpg, according to EIA data. Without the Biden policies, model 2027 cars are supposed to meet a 43.6 mpg standard and gradually increase to 50.5 mpg by 2035. Light trucks and SUVs, beginning in model year 2027, under a scenario where Biden policies are revoked by the Trump administration, are set to reach fuel efficiency of 27.2 mpg and increase to 28.6 mpg by 2035. Had the Biden policies remained in place, SUVs and light trucks were expected to meet a 28.4 mpg standard in 2027 and increase to 46.2 mpg by 2035, according to EIA data. The EIA's own data estimates that a future scenario — where Biden-Obama emissions standards are revoked — would lead to a loss of 450,000 jobs by 2035. Jobs would begin to rebound by 2045, but not enough to overcome the significant losses suffered in previous decades. Peter Huether, senior transportation research associate at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, said in a statement, "Drivers would pay thousands of dollars more in fuel and maintenance costs over the life of a vehicle, and businesses could lose billions annually from higher trucking costs" as a result of the Trump administration's deregulation. "These costs would ripple through the economy, raising prices for everyday goods and undercutting job growth," Huether said.

The 2026 Lotus Emira Is Better. But It's Also Pricier

Lotus announced several updates to the 2026 Emira back in June. The automaker made the V6 SE the flagship model in America, with the Emira Turbo serving as the brand's entry point, and now we know how much they'll cost. CarBuzz is reporting that the Emira will start at $106,900. That'll buy you a Mercedes-AMG-powered Lotus with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine making 360 horsepower. The 2025 Emira started at $102,250. Photo by: Lotus The Emira V6 SE will start at $112,900. The 3.5-liter supercharged powertrain produces the same 400 horsepower, but Lotus optimized the dampers and made wheel alignment adjustments for better handling and ride comfort. Every 2026 Emira , regardless of powertrain, gets a rerouted cooling system that not only improves flow to the main radiator and transmission cooler, but also reduces weight. The automaker also refined the model's eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox for the new model year. The car will be available with two new colors: Eos Green and Purple Haze Metallic. A comment on an post last Saturday, which revealed pricing, noted that the two colors would cost an extra $2,950. Tangerine Orange is a $7,800 upgrade. The commenter also said the Racing Line variant would start at $115,900, excluding destination. The Racing Line trim adds a hand-painted lower pinstripe, 20-inch wheels, and extra badging, according to the consumer site. Motor1 has reached out to Lotus to confirm the prices. ‘This Happens All the Time to Customers:' Man Buys Brand-New Toyota 7 Months Ago. Now He Says the Warranty's Been Voided

A Toyota customer reveals that Toyota denied his warranty claim to fix his steering wheel, which is already peeling after seven months. As of this writing, the TikTok has gone viral, generating over 125,900 views. The Leather Started to Disintegrate, and It's Not Your Problem? In the post, Zane (@clinicallyinzane) shares his frustration toward Toyota for denying his warranty claim to fix his steering wheel. The short, silent message spoke loudly. 'Maybe Karen's are right sometimes, because what do you mean Toyota isn't warranting a car I bought seven months ago?' he writes in an on-screen caption. In a follow-up post , he explains why Toyota denied him coverage to fix his steering wheel. The video reveals the steering wheel leather bubbling, which he believes will peel shortly. 'That's not covered by warranty because that could be your hand oils,' he says the dealership told him. 'I don't drive telekinetically, I drive with my hands,' Zane replies. Zane told Motor1 , 'I have my steering wheel Softex 'leather' bubbling up and detaching from the wheel at under 30k miles, only after buying it 7 months ago. The dealer sent it to Toyota which they denied due to 'external factors' but can't say the exact reason why. It's been escalated, but I was told it is unlikely to be fixed.' SofTex is a synthetic leather seat material designed for wear, easy cleaning, and resisting spills, Toyota reports. While SofTex is supposed to be easy to clean, other Toyota drivers have shared similar frustrations with the SofTex leather peeling apart . 'A brand new car denying a warranty because hands touch the wheel. This steering wheel isn't designed to be touched. The leather started to disintegrate and it's not your problem?' Zane concludes. This Happens All the Time Viewers chimed in to share about their Toyota warranty stories and how they were also denied coverage. 'Nope, they will fight tooth and nail to avoid warranting. I had a 23 Tundra and my motor blew 'known issue now' and they partially rebuilt it and left bad parts in. They just told me 'oops nothing we can do now',' one TikTok commenter shared. 'Toyota declined to warranty an axle replacement. I have an extended warranty & they said because I had lowering springs they wouldn't be covering it,' another replied. 'I've been a Toyota MDT since 2005. This happens all the time to customers. Any type of outside influence results in the repair not being covered by Toyota,' a master diagnostic technician shared. Additionally, Toyota drivers on car enthusiast forums have shared their stories about coverage being denied. These denied warranty claims included issues with technology , blown engines , and transmissions . 'Toyota has a long history of giving people run-arounds on warranty & recalls. Their service centers are a joke,' one TikTok commenter shared. What Causes a Warranty Claim to Be Denied? Automakers and warranty companies are in business to make money, which means that they aren't ecstatic to pay every claim that comes through, CarTalk reports. According to Lawyers , vehicle warranty claims can be denied for several reasons, including: Failing to maintain the vehicle or not following a regular maintenance schedule: This includes not doing oil changes, tire rotations, or scheduling other routine services as specified in the owner's manual. Using unauthorized parts or service providers: Using aftermarket parts for modifications or using an unauthorized service center may disqualify your warranty. Misuse or abuse of the vehicle: This includes using the vehicle in a way that the manufacturer didn't intend, like going off-road in a car that isn't designed for that activity, racing, or overloading the vehicle beyond the recommended amount. What Should You Do If Your Claim Is Denied? A claim denial is not the end of the road. Once you've received an official claim denial, you should ask for a copy of the decision in writing, CarTalk reports. Once you know the reason for the claim denial, you might be able to dispute it by providing supporting documentation such as receipts and repair records, Lawyers states. In the case of Zane, viewers suggest contacting Toyota of America . 'Contact Toyota of America, they hate it when you do that,' one shared. 'I did and they gave the same run around,' Zane replied. More viewers suggested taking this denied claim to the attorney general and filing a claim with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) . 'Then go to the attorney general in your state. Also make sure you did nothing to void the warranty,' one commenter suggested. 'File a complaint with the BBB,' another added.
