Court freezes more than RM750mil in assets linked to Daim's wife, family
Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid granted the ex-parte (unilateral) application by the MACC under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001), for investigation under Section 4(1) of the same act.

The assets include two commercial buildings at St Mary Axe and One Crown Court, three luxury residences in Bryanston Square, Bryanston Mews, and Lancaster Gate, two residential units at Gloucester Place, and a bank account at CAF Bank Ltd (UK) allegedly owned by The Ilham Foundation.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat confirmed the matter when contacted by reporters.
On May 22, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that eight investigation papers had been opened based on new information received from foreign agencies, related to the property ownership of Daim, his family, and proxies.
Azam mentioned that the latest information indicates that Daim's assets, along with those of his family and associates, were not declared to the MACC during the 2023 investigation. - Bernama

Abu Bakar, 63, meanwhile, is filling the vacancy of Court of Appeal President following the retirement of Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on July 3, while Azizah, 63, replaces Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who retired on July 24. Wan Ahmad Farid holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of West London and obtained a Certificate in Legal Practice from Universiti Malaya in 1986. He began his legal career as an advocate and solicitor with Messrs Adnan & Wee in Kuala Terengganu, from 1987 to 2003. Beyond his legal career, Wan Ahmad Farid had been active in public administration and politics, having served as political secretary to former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from 2003 to 2008, before being appointed deputy home minister from 2008 to 2009. He returned to legal practice between 2011 and 2015 as a partner at Messrs Wan Farid & Surin in Kuala Lumpur before being appointed as a Judicial Commissioner, serving in the High Courts of Shah Alam, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Baru until 2019. Syndicates use quiet Kelantan border to sneak in foreign workers
KOTA BARU: The "flying passport" ruse persists in Kelantan, but on a smaller scale, an Immigration source said. Despite being separated from Thailand by the shallow Sungai Golok, the source said the ruse was detected only at one of the three checkpoints in the state. Kelantan has three entry points along the Thai border: Rantau Panjang, Pengkalan Kubor in Tumpat and Bukit Bunga in Tanah Merah. "However, two of these checkpoints, Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubor, are always busy with cross-border trade and travel. "They are less likely to be used by syndicate members due to the high traffic volume and enforcement presence. "Instead, syndicate members opt for the Bukit Bunga Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security Complex, which is located in a quieter area and receives less scrutiny." The source said local agents were usually the facilitators of the syndicate, working with Thais employed in Malaysia, particularly in eateries and restaurants. "Thais working in Malaysia engage local agents. "These agents deliver the workers' passports to Immigration officers and have them stamped without the passport holders being present. "Some of these officers are believed to have been cooperating with the agents for years." While the scale of the "flying passport" ruse in Kelantan may not rival that of Johor or other border states, enforcement sources said it remained a serious breach of Immigration protocols and national security. Kelantan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Azmin Yusoff said no reports had been received about border enforcement officers' involvement in the ruse. "We, however, urge members of the public to come forward with information." Azmin, however, said three Immigration officers were detained by the state MACC in the first six months of this year, including those assigned to the Kelantan-Thailand border. He said the three were among the 21 enforcement officers arrested since 2022 for soliciting and receiving bribes.
