WHAT HAPPENED?
The 33-year-old midfielder has publicly criticised the former Leverkusen manager for lacking direct communication after he was relegated to a fringe role in the second half of the 2024-25 season. He told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger that he expected 'open and honest' dialogue and was disappointed by the Spaniard's approach.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
While Alonso's tenure at Leverkusen was widely hailed for its historic Bundesliga title win, Hofmann's comments reveal underlying tensions behind the scenes. The midfielder made 46 appearances in 2023-24, but barely featured the following season, starting just four league games. His frustration suggests that not all players thrived under Alonso's leadership, despite the team's success. With new coach Erik ten Hag in place, the player is ready to fight for his place in the starting XI.
WHAT HOFMANN SAID
Hofmann targeted the former Leverkusen coach's leadership style, specifically his lack of clear communication with players during difficult periods. "I expect a coach to address something directly when he notices something. I expect open and direct communication. A coach shouldn't wait longer than two weeks for this, because as a coach, I want the players to be in top shape to raise the training level. There's always a need for competition, that's clear. I would have expected a bit more from the coach."
He added: "New coach, new opportunity. I'm a Bundesliga kid. I'm fighting my way back. I feel comfortable, but under Xabi Alonso, I probably would have considered a move. Personally, I'm putting last season in a box and don't want to take it out again. It was very disappointing for me, what happened there and how it played out. That's not what I'm aiming for."
WHAT NEXT FOR HOFMANN & ALONSO?
Hofmann is determined to regain his form under Ten Hag, while Alonso's challenge at Real Madrid may demand improved player relationships if the Leverkusen player's complaints are correct.

Fabrizio Romano confirms GREEN light for Liverpool to sign Alexander Isak

And while we can all point to Liverpool as the main suitors for him, whether Isak actually wants to move to Merseyside was in doubt up until now, but his intentions have now been formally revealed. Isak's priority is Liverpool According to Fabrizio Romano, who initially broke the news that Liverpool were still interested in Isak, despite the Ekitike transfer, personal terms with the Swedish striker are unlikely to be an issue. He said: "Once again: Alexander Isak wants Liverpool, it's his priority as reported. "No talks with Al Hilal, Chelsea or Manchester United." So while it felt unlikely that anyone else really had a chance of signing Isak, it's now been confirmed that no one else has approached the player or Newcastle since his intention to leave was announced. That is an enormous piece of information that we previously didn't know. The player remaining a target for Liverpool was one thing, but for the interest to be reciprocated is massive for our chances.

Breakthrough as Bayern Munich prepare IRRESISTIBLE offer for Luis Diaz

Liverpool's record-breaking transfer window shows no signs of slowing down. Having already added Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili - the Reds are pressing on with a bid for Alexander Isak. Richard Hughes has already overseen around £265m worth of spending - with more to come not only on Isak but perhaps a centre-back too. LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now To finance any further spending, it's likely that sales will be required. Liverpool have got the likes of Federico Chiesa, Ben Doak, Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton potentially available for transfer this summer. But the two heavyweight departures who could go a long way towards guaranteeing Isak's arrival are Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. Bayern ready to sweeten Diaz deal Nunez, 26, has got interest from Saudi Arabia and could be on his way if Liverpool receive around £70m. Bayern Munich, meanwhile are the frontrunners for Diaz - with Liverpool thought to be holding out for €80m for their Colombian winger. The Bavarians have been reluctant to go that high - with the latest reports from BILD indicating that a deal reaching €75m could be sanctioned. However there is a crucial TWIST in Bayern's latest offer - according to the same source. In order to make up the shortfall, Bayern are now willing to insert a Saudi sell-on clause. Diaz is attracting interest from Al-Nassr this summer but would probably prefer to remain in Europe at this stage of his career. But should the 28-year-old opt to pursue a deal in the Saudi Pro League a little further down the line then Liverpool will be there to cash in. Bayern propose "Saudi sell-on" to Liverpool 'SPORT BILD learned: Before Liverpool FC left for their trip to Asia on Sunday, Diaz's agent Raúl Costa was in Liverpool for several days to negotiate and sound out the possibilities of a deal,' a report reads. 'Bayern Munich aren't willing to go as high as €80 million for a transfer fee. Internally, a threshold has been set for Díaz's transfer fee and salary. The transfer fee is expected to be around €75 million. 'However, various models are being discussed. One is to include a sell-on clause in Díaz's contract with Liverpool. 'This means that if he is sold to Saudi Arabia in, say, three years (Diaz is to receive a four-year contract), Liverpool can participate. The fact is: Bayern are very optimistic that the deal can be completed in the next 7 to 10 days!' And so we enter a crucial period for Diaz's future. If Bayern can get this deal over the line - it will add a crucial €75m to the mix for Isak. And then, if and when Diaz heads off to Saudi Arabia, the club will cash in again.

Fresh Milan bid for Doue expected to be under 25m

Milan are expected to make a new offer to Strasbourg for right-back Guéla Doué, even if it is still well short of the €30m asking price. The 22-year-old emerged as the first choice for coach Max Allegri, who preferred to back off from Marc Pubill in favour of a raised bid for the Ivory Coast international. They have seen two previous proposals rejected, reported to be worth €15m and €20m plus bonuses. It is still quite a way off the asking price set by Strasbourg, which is at roughly €30m, but it does fit with the way that Milan have been working on the transfer market this summer. Doué was purchased by Strasbourg from Stade Rennes only last summer for €6m, so his value has already sky-rocketed in the space of 12 months. That is thanks to his performances last season, with one goal and two assists in 34 competitive games for Strasbourg.
