Malaysia seeks to drop Trump tariffs to 20pc but resists key US demands

Malay Mail4 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Malaysia is trying to lower looming US tariffs to 20 per cent but has pushed back against American demands that officials say touch on core domestic policies.
Citing sources, Bloomberg reported that talks with the Trump administration have advanced on issues like AI chip transshipment, but Malaysia is unwilling to extend special EV tax treatment for American firms.
The government argues that continuing such exemptions past December would force it to give similar treatment to other countries.
Officials also rejected calls to reduce foreign ownership limits in finance and energy, citing political sensitivity and the need for broad stakeholder engagement.
A US demand to reduce fishing subsidies has also sparked concern, as it could alienate a key voter base in rural Malay communities.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday that Malaysia will not compromise on national policies, including those related to ethnic affirmative action.
Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abudl Aziz has stressed that any deal must be fair and not sacrifice Malaysia's long-term economic sovereignty.
The US has not publicly confirmed its full list of demands, but officials say negotiations are ongoing amid growing pressure on trade partners in the region.
Vietnam recently voiced frustration after a supposed deal for lower tariffs turned out to include a 20 per cent rate, suggesting talks with the US remain unpredictable.
The stakes are high for Malaysia in the talks, as the country must preserve both economic growth and domestic political stability.
On July 8, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the United States, effective August 1, up from the 24 per cent imposed during the 90-day 'pause' from his 'Liberation Day' salvo in April.

Cops shut down ‘Turun Anwar' stage at Dataran Merdeka over safety, lack of DBKL approval

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Police instructed Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to dismantle the main stage set up at Dataran Merdeka for an event today, citing safety concerns and lack of approval. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the structure was erected without permission from DBKL or a formal application from the organisers. 'The stage structure did not guarantee safety, and the police were not informed of how many people would be on the stage,' he told reporters via Whatsapp. Mohamed Usuf said that police and the organisers had initially agreed to use two Hilux vehicles as a makeshift stage. Thousands of protestors gathered in central Kuala Lumpur this afternoon to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The demonstration began outside Sogo and Pertama Complex and is expected to move towards Dataran Merdeka after 1pm.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — Traffic at Jalan Dang Wangi has come to a stand still due to the sizable crowd protesting against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership. Thousands of protestors dressed predominantly in black are gathered in front of Sogo supermarket and Pertama Complex causing a traffic jam. PAS leaders like Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh were seen giving speeches to rally the crowd, calling for Anwar's immediate resignation. Lawyers to debate two resolutions on judiciary at Bar EGM

The quorum for the EGM, to be held at Matrade Hall, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah at 10am on Saturday, is set at 500 members. KUALA LUMPUR : The Malaysian Bar will convene an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) this Saturday to debate two key motions concerning judicial independence in the country. One, titled 'Judicial Independence', will be tabled by Bar Council chairman Ezri Abdul Wahab. The second, 'Motion to hold the prime minister accountable for having allowed for the undermining of public confidence in the judiciary,' will be jointly proposed by lawyers Malik Imtiaz Sarwar and Surendra Ananth, with support from four others. A third motion, 'Implementing a Fair Rate of Minimum Remuneration for Pupils' — put forward by lawyers Goh Cia Yee and Vince Tan — has garnered widespread support, seconded by 190 lawyers. Bar secretary Murshidah Mustafa circulated the motions to more than 24,000 lawyers practicing in Peninsular Malaysia. The quorum for the EGM, to be held at Matrade Hall, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah at 10am, is set at 500 members. This meeting follows significant developments in recent months. On March 15, the Bar unanimously passed two amended resolutions reaffirming its stance against any interference in the judiciary by the executive, legislature, or other unauthorised individuals. On July 1, Ezri called for the EGM, amid concerns over the lack of clarity surrounding the retirement of chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who was set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 66. On July 14, a large group of lawyers gathered outside the Palace of Justice for a march in defence of the judiciary's integrity. Ezri then submitted a memorandum to Zamri Misman, the legal affairs department's director-general, who received it on behalf of the Prime Minister's Office. The memorandum called for the appointment of judicial leaders with demonstrable integrity and a track record of quality judgments, and for judicial vacancies to be filled swiftly to prevent delays in case hearings. Last Friday, the Chief Registrar's office announced that Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, 62, will be appointed Malaysia's new chief justice, succeeding Tengku Maimun. The announcement also said that Justice Abu Bakar Jais, 63, will head the Court of Appeal, while Justice Azizah Nawawi, 63, is set to become Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. The statement added that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had, based on the prime minister's advice and after consulting the Conference of Rulers, consented to the appointments, in accordance with Article 122B of the Federal Constitution. All three judges will be sworn in and presented with their letters of appointment at Istana Negara on July 28.
