YSES-1 system
, which surrounds a young star 300 light-years from Earth, consists of two planets, YSES-1 b and YSES-1 c, both of which have atmospheric sand clouds. The system is a mere 16.7 million years old, an infant in cosmic age that presents scientists with the unusual chance to watch planet formation and development unfold in real-time.

According to Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) scientist Valentina D'Orazi, the silicates seen in these planets go through sublimation and condensation cycles just like water on Earth. These active cycles help the sand clouds stay suspended in the air, indicating sophisticated atmospheric transport and formation processes.
JWST reveals silicates in both exoplanet atmospheres and formation disks
Of the two gas giants, YSES-1 b is a still-growing planet that could someday be a large Jupiter analogue. It is encircled by a flattened cloud of material, a circumplanetary disk; a phenomenon common around young planet. The disk holds the planet-building blocks of its atmosphere, silicates, which fuel its growth.
YSES-1 c, however, is already enormous, around 14 times as massive as Jupiter. Its atmosphere has a reddish color due to suspended silica, which sometimes rains down as sandy rain to the planet's center. This is the first direct detection of silicates not only in an
exoplanet
atmosphere but also in a circumplanetary disk. That makes this observation historic and also pivotal to the study of planetary science.
How JWST made the discovery possible
The James Webb Space Telescope was able to image these subtle details due to the extended orbits of the planets around their parent star. These were distances ranging from five to ten times the distance between the Sun and Neptune, and they enabled astronomers to view the planets without the blinding light of the star.
With its sophisticated infrared equipment, JWST gathered high-resolution spectral information that, on analysis, showed the presence of silicate particles and their composition. Although such direct observation remains possible only for a few exoplanets at this time, it highlights JWST's unparalleled capability to observe in detail the atmospheres and environments of other worlds.
JWST insights reveal how Jupiter and Saturn may have taken shape
One of the most intriguing things about this discovery is what it implies about the early history of our own solar system. By looking at young exoplanets such as YSES-1 b and c, astronomers can deduce how gas giants such as Jupiter and Saturn might have formed and developed.
"Examining these planets is like peeking into the history of our own planetary back yard," D'Orazi explained. "It confirms that young exoplanet atmospheres and the disks around them are key drivers of their final atmosphere composition." The researchers also highlighted the need for detailed atmospheric models to interpret the JWST's excellent data pointing to the telescope's continued role in pushing the frontiers of planetary science and exoplanet study.
These historic findings were released on June 10 in the journal Nature and highlighted the same day during the 246th American Astronomical Society meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.

The planet, named TOI-1846 b , is located approximately 154 light-years from Earth and orbits a red dwarf star The discovery was led by Abderahmane Soubkiou and his team at the Oukaimeden Observatory in Morocco. The planet was detected using data from NASA 's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and confirmed through ground-based photometry, high-resolution imaging, and spectroscopy.'We have validated TOI-1846 b using TESS and multicolor ground-based photometric data, high-resolution imaging, and spectroscopic observations,' the authors wrote, as reported by to the study, TOI-1846 b has a radius of approximately 1.792 times that of Earth and is about 4.4 times more massive. The planet completes one orbit around its host star every 3.93 days, suggesting it lies extremely close to the star. Its equilibrium temperature is estimated at 568.1 Kelvin (approximately 295°C).Researchers believe the planet likely has a water-rich composition, based on its size and density. However, they emphasized the need for further observations to confirm this. In particular, radial velocity (RV) measurements using instruments like MAROON-X could help determine its mass and internal structure more study also notes that the planet has a Transmission Spectroscopy Metric (TSM) of 47, which is below the benchmark value of 90 typically used for small sub-Neptune planets. This means that while its atmosphere may be more difficult to study, it remains a target of interest for future host star, TOI-1846, is a red dwarf with a mass of about 0.42 times that of the Sun and a radius of approximately 0.4 solar radii. It has an estimated age of 7.2 billion years and an effective temperature of 3,568 discovery adds to a growing list of super-Earths identified by astronomers in recent years. Earlier in 2025, researchers discovered another super-Earth, HD 20794 d, located just 20 light-years from Earth. These early images help scientists confirm that the instruments are working correctly and are ready for more detailed solar observations. Seeing the moon in a new light Another exceptional moment happened on April 27, when one of PUNCH's cameras, the Narrow Field Imager (NFI), spotted the new moon passing near the sun. To see this clearly, the NFI used a special cover called an occluder to block out the sun's bright light. In the image, the moon looks full even though it was technically a new moon. That's because of something called 'Earthshine', or sunlight bouncing off Earth and lighting up the moon's dark side. This helped scientists make sure the moon won't get in the way of PUNCH's future views of the sun's outer layers. On April 16, two of the other PUNCH satellites, WFI-1 and WFI, also captured the soft glow of zodiacal light. Health experts are raising alarms about 'forever chemicals,' a class of synthetic compounds known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). They are found in countless everyday products and are increasingly linked to neurological harm. From nonstick cookware, water-resistant clothing, and even food packaging, these chemicals do not break down in the environment or the human body. A new study from the University of Rochester has added to growing concerns over forever chemicals. The study published in the European Journal of Neuroscience , found that even short-chain variants may have long-term impacts on brain development, especially in males. History of forever chemicals PFAS, developed in the 1940s, became popular for their resistance to heat, water, and oil. Used in products ranging from Teflon pans to cosmetics, dental floss, and fast-food wrappers, these PFAs add convenience. However, it came at the expense of health. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data indicates widespread PFAS exposure in the US population, with detectable levels in more than 98 % of their blood , due to exposure over decades. These PFAS are linked to a range of health issues, including developmental issues in babies and kidney cancer. One PFAS, perfluorohexanoic acid or PFHxA, is made up of a shorter chain of molecules and is thought to have less of an impact on human health. The new study, however, suggests otherwise, and has revealed its potential to damage the brain. This finding suggests that the male brain might be more vulnerable to environmental insults during neurodevelopment,' Ania Majewska, PhD, professor of Neuroscience and senior author, said in a statement. The study also found that males are more often diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and ADHD. Forever chemicals linked to anxiety and memory loss Male mice exposed to higher doses of PFHxA showed mild developmental changes, such as a decrease in activity levels, increased anxiety-like behaviors, and memory deficits. The effects were, however, not found in females that were exposed to PFHxA. 'Pretty Little Baby' Singer Connie Francis Hospitalised, Family Gives Health Update The researchers followed these mice into adulthood. What they found was striking. In male mice, PFHxA exposure affected its behaviour long after the exposure stopped. This suggests that PFHxA exposure could have effects on the developing brain that have long-term consequences. 'This work points to the need for more research in short-chain PFAS. To our knowledge, PFHxA has not been evaluated for developmental neurobehavioral toxicity in a rodent model. Future studies should evaluate the cellular and molecular effects of PFHxA, including cell-type specific effects, in regions associated with motor, emotional/fear, and memory domains to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings,' Majewska added. PFHxA, though a shorter chain, has been found to be persistent in water.
