NMESIS missiles test-fired in PH during Balikatan 2025

REUTERS/ Eloisa Lopez The United States' Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System (NMESIS) was used in a test fire in the Philippines during the two countries' Balikatan Exercise, the US Pacific Fleet said Thursday. 'We test-fired NMESIS missiles, operated amphibious vehicles and HIMARS, and trained with unmanned systems, and conducted full battle tests and real-world scenarios,' US Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Stephen Koehler said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the Pacific Amphibious Leaders Symposium in Manila. However, the US military official did not give more details about the activity. This year's Balikatan was conducted in different areas in the Philippines from April 21 to May 9 with around 17,000 participants. NMESIS is a ground-based anti-ship missile system deployed by the United States Marine Corps' Marine Littoral Regiments for coastal defense and maritime security operations. The Naval Strike Missile has a range of up to 300 kilometers. The missile system was initially deployed to the Philippines in April to be used for Balikatan between US and Filipino forces. NMESIS will remain in the country where it will take part in more exercises, according to the Philippine military. This is the second advanced missile system from the US to be present in Philippine territory. Last March, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also welcomed reports on the second deployment of the US Army's Typhon Mid-Range Capability (MRC) missile system in the country.

Philippines 'concerned' on Trump's 20% tariff despite negotiations

The Philippine government was taken aback by US President Donald Trump's decision to slap a higher 20% tariff rate on the country's goods exported to America despite earlier efforts to haggle for lower duties for products imported from Manila. 'We are in receipt of the United States latest reciprocal tariff for the Philippines. We are concerned that, notwithstanding our efforts and constant engagements, the US still decided to impose a 20% tariff on Philippine exports,' Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs of the Philippines Frederick Go said at a Palace briefing on Thursday. On Wednesday, Trump issued his tariff notices to several trading partners including the Philippines, which he slapped with a 20% duty, higher than what he previously reciprocal tariff rate 17% in April. Nonetheless, Go said the Philippines 'remains committed to continuing negotiations in good faith to pursue a better and more comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.' Earlier in the day, a Reuters report quoted Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez as saying the Philippines is planning to negotiate with Washington to lower tariffs following the US move to impose higher 20% duties on goods imported from Manila. "We are still planning to negotiate that down," Jose Manuel Romualdez said in a phone message. — with a report from Reuters/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

"We are still planning to negotiate that down," Jose Manuel Romualdez said in a phone message. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued August 1 tariff notices to several trading partners including the Philippines, which he slapped with a 20% duty, higher than the previously announced 17%. Asked what rate the Philippines is looking at, he said: "Will see." US goods trade with the Philippines reached an estimated $23.5 billion in 2024, according to data from the Office of the United States Trade Representative. US exports to the Philippines stood at $9.3 billion, a 0.4% increase from 2023, while imports from the Philippines totaled $14.2 billion, up 6.9% year-over-year. The resulting US goods trade deficit with the Philippines widened to $4.9 billion in 2024, marking a 21.8% increase from the previous year.
