Darts star who upset Nathan Aspinall could still have been banned for World Matchplay

Daily Mirror21-07-2025
Wessel Nijman caused a major upset by beating Nathan Aspinall in the first round of the World Matchplay, but the Dutchman was once at risk of missing the tournament altogether
Darts sensation Wessel Nijman has made a triumphant debut at the World Matchplay and secured a spot in the second round after being sidelined for more than two years. The Dutch ace was initially handed a five-year suspension back in October 2020 after confessing to violations of betting and anti-corruption regulations.

His ban was cut in half following his involvement in anti-corruption education and activities. Nijman, 25, celebrated a significant win over Nathan Aspinall in the first round of the World Matchplay on Saturday, surging to a 10-6 win against the world No. 7.

He is now set to take on James Wade at the Winter Gardens come Tuesday. But Nijman's career once hit a serious snag after he was implicated in a match-fixing and betting scandal.

The controversy stemmed from his 4-0 defeat to David Evans during the Modus Icons of Darts series in May 2020. According to The Sun, Nijman conceded to fixing the match, agreeing to lose every leg for a sum of £8,300 after being approached by an intermediary.
The Darts Regulation Authority slapped him with a five-year ban, retroactive to August 2020, but Nijman served only half that period due to his proactive engagement with player education and anti-corruption initiatives. Upon the announcement of the ban, he reflected on his wrongdoing.
"While it is clear that I was put under external pressure, ultimately I agreed to do this and take full responsibility for my actions," he said at the time. "I hope any other player who finds themselves in a similar position will learn from my mistakes and follow the correct procedure to help protect their own integrity and the integrity of darts as a sport. Unfortunately, I did not do that and made a stupid mistake that I am rightly being punished for."

Nijman, who worked as an electrician during his suspension, was permitted to return to competition in February 2023. He excelled on the PDC Development Tour and booked his place at the PDC World Championship, as well as obtaining a PDC Tour card.
In October 2024, Nijman claimed his maiden senior PDC crown by beating Stephen Bunting 8-5 in the final at Players Championship 24. After the landmark win, the world No. 42 said: "I've felt like it was coming. I thought, 'Be patient and it will come.'

"It's probably the best months of my darting career. When I was playing the Development Tour last year I wasn't expecting to get a tour card. I knew I could win it when I was in the final. My goal was to get in the top 64 after two years; I'll probably get into it after one year so I'm very happy with that."
Nevertheless, if the World Matchplay newcomer continues his progress in the competition, he could be in prime position to fly up the rankings, reports the Daily Express. There was an even more shocking result elsewhere as former world champion Luke Humphries was knocked out in the opening round.
Nijman expressed to Sky Sports that his victory over Aspinall might just be the pinnacle of his career so far: "I think so. I won one game at Ally Pally, but this is probably more special than playing at Ally Pally, especially with the way I played.
"I'm very happy with the way I played and very happy with the win. I didn't feel too nervy. I played like myself. I'm just happy to be here. Now I've got to see it match by match."

But despite his mammoth price tag, Isak wouldn't even touch the top 20 Prem signings ever when adjusted for inflation. The Magpies are thought to want a whopping £150MILLION for their star man, but Liverpool reportedly believe they can chip that deal down to a more affordable £120m figure. Even £120m would represent the largest figure ever spent by a Premier League club, topping the current record of £116m - also set by Liverpool this window when they signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. But thanks to football finance experts Valuball, that transfer fee can be put into context with transfer inflation. That title would be held by Alan Shearer, whose £15m move from Blackburn to Newcastle United in 1996 would be worth an eye-watering £225MILLION in today's money. Liverpool would still hold the second largest fee thanks to their £8.5m move to sign Stan Collymore from Nottingham Forest in 1995. Manchester United have four players in the top 10 with Juan Sebastian Veron (£175m), Rio Ferdinand (£165m), Andy Cole (£159m) and Paul Pogba (£145m) all worth a fortune in today's fees. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe gives update on Alexander Isak's Liverpool transfer Chelsea's signings of Fernando Torres for £50m in 2011 and Andriy Shevchenko for £31m in 2006 are worth £154m and £142m respectively these days, putting them both in the top 10 too. Isak's potential £120m deal would mean he wouldn't even break the top 20 in the list. Moises Caicedo's £115m move to Chelsea in 2023 currently stands in 20th spot, having been valued at £124m this summer. However, if Newcastle can convince the Reds to splash out £150m on Isak then he would rocket up to ninth in the all-time list - sitting between Pogba's move to Man Utd and Torres' switch to Stamford Bridge. It looks as if that could be the way thing are heading too, after the Toon's top brass rejected Liverpool's first bid for Isak this week. Reports suggest that the Merseyside outfit lodged a bid worth around £120m. Newcastle are desperate for their star man to stay and have offered him a new, improved deal. The contract also includes a release clause that would allow Isak to leave next summer. 8 8 Fernando Torres' failed Chelsea switch cost £154m in real terms Credit: AFP 8 Rio Ferdinand is the most expensive defender in Premier League history when adjusted for inflation Credit: PA:Press Association

Malik Dijksteel completes early move to St Mirren after pre-contract agreement

The former Cork City winger arrived in Paisley yesterday after he put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Saints. St Mirren have announced the arrival of Malik Dijksteel from Cork City after the club struck a deal to get the winger in early. ‌ Last week, the club announced they had signed the 24-year-old on a pre-contract from League of Ireland Premier Division side Cork City. ‌ But now, the Saints have reached a deal with City to bring the Dutch player to Paisley on a three-year deal. ‌ Manager Robinson believes Dijksteel will be able to offer him attributes similar to those of Ryan Alebiosu last season when he occupied the right flank. 'He's another real live option for the [right hand side],' he said at the club's Ralston training ground yesterday. 'And the thing with Malik is he's been playing games as well due to the earlier start to the season in Ireland. ‌ 'We knew last year that in certain games, we've gained a lot of respect from the opposition where teams sit in and it's hard to break them down. 'And we didn't have those wingers that went past people, those 1v1 situations, outwith Ryan Alebiosu [last season]. 'So, we brought him [Dijksteel] in and Jalmaro Calvin, while having Roland Idowu and Conor McMenamin already in the building. ‌ 'And I believe Malik's another one of those boys that can then cause havoc. 'He can be really exciting. He needs to get up to our work ethic without the ball as well. But he certainly is a really exciting signing and one I think fans will really take to.' Robinson now has an array of options in his wide areas after they brought in Calvin and Jayden Richardson. ‌ The Saints gaffer hopes his squad will play at their top level when they pitch up at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon to kick off their Scottish Premiership season. It will be a rematch of the final game of the 2024/25 campaign, where the Buddies looked almost certain to bag all three points but for a late James Forrest equaliser. Robbo says he will take lessons from the end of last season as the Buddies prepare to for a challenging run of fixtures. ‌ 'We will approach it with no fear,' he said. 'We go with the same ethos, the same organisation, the same work rate. 'We've added players at the top end of the pitch. But those players at the top end of the pitch still have to come into our work ethic. 'So as much as they go and give you confidence, it's a completely new season, completely different teams you're playing against in terms of assignments. 'And everything starts again. But nothing changes in terms of our work ethic and our organisation.'

Propper said: "I completely disagree that I somehow failed at Rangers. "It was an adventure I wanted to embark on, at a wonderful club with an incredibly rich history. "Many Dutch players have played there as well. "I got to play and score in an Old Firm match for example. That was fantastic. "Even as a little boy, you know Rangers v Celtic is a huge, historic match, one that's even watched in the Netherlands. "It was incredible for me to experience that. "The lead-up to the matches where the city of Glasgow is 50 per cent Rangers and 50 per cent Celtic was amazing. "Well, I got to play in five of those games. "I had a wonderful time both at Rangers and the four of us as a family spent a lovely year in Glasgow.
