Newport Beach police release footage of fatal shooting of motorcyclist, ‘Real Housewives' cast member's brother
The events leading up to the death of Geoffrey Shyam Stirling unfolded Thursday, April 17 beginning at 9:14 p.m., when he can be seen in police dashcam recordings briefly stopping at Superior Avenue before crossing the intersection against a red light. The officer who pulls him over asks if he is OK; the motorcyclist tells him he has not been drinking and had nearly been struck by other drivers earlier that day.
When the officer tells Stirling to sit down on the curb, he refuses.
'Here, I'll show you my ID, here,' Stirling said while standing in front of the officer and placing a hand into the breast pocket of his jacket. 'Don't shoot me.'
'I'm not going to shoot you,' the officer replied. 'Don't reach for [expletive] [expletive] how about that? Sit down. We'll figure it out.'
Stirling remains standing in front of the officer. When the latter turns away to radio for backup, the motorcyclist advances one or two steps toward him, then appears to freeze for a moment when he turns back around.
At that point the officer attempts to restrain Stirling. He resists and they grapple each other, mostly remaining on their feet, for about 35 seconds. The officer's body worn camera falls to the ground early in the confrontation, but a camera mounted in the patrol vehicle captures the exchange from a short distance away.
Police said Stirling managed to grab the officer's Taser, and attempted to use the less-lethal weapon against the back of the officer's neck. A loud buzzing noise can be heard during the fight in the video shared with the public.
A few moments later, the two stop grappling and wind up standing and facing each other a a few feet apart. Stirling appears to point the Taser at the officer, who shouts, 'Drop it!' before firing five rounds.
Stirling was taken to nearby Hoag Hospital, where he later died. He was an actor and model. His father, Scott Stirling, is the president of Newfoundland Broadcasting Company Ltd. and his sister was a former cast member on the reality TV series 'Real Housewives of Orange County.'
'My family has experienced an unimaginable loss,' Stirling's sister, Lydia McLaughlin, wrote in an Instagram post. 'My brother, Geoff, was tragically taken and our hearts are shattered.'
Online court records show Stirling had been charged with a felony arson that allegedly happened on March 21. He was due to appear for an arraignment hearing scheduled four days after he was killed.
Newport Beach Police Chief Dave Miner said the investigation into the shooting is still in its early stages, and could take up to a year to complete. His department, as well as the Orange County district attorney's office are looking into the matter. The office of California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta is also investigating, per the terms of a law giving state officials oversight on cases involving the killing of an unarmed person by police.

In an alert sent to other police departments, Medford police requested a well-being check on the man in the black SUV. He was spotted in Stoneham around 1 p.m. but fled before police could check on him, authorities said. He next surfaced in Billerica where he went to a 7-11 and was suspected of shoplifting a gas can from the store before driving off, authorities said. Vizcaino's relatives called Malden police around 3 p.m. reporting he was at their home where Vizcaino once lived, authorities said. After Malden police were unsuccessful in stopping him, he drove into Everett, where both Everett and State Police began trying to check on him. Once on Broadway, Vizcaino crashed the SUV, engaged with the trooper who saw the gas can inside the car, and ran off even after being struck by at least one Taser, officials said. Vizcaino then allegedly tried to break into other cars as they exited Encore. He crossed Broadway and tried to break into cars stopped in traffic, but was unsuccessful, she said. At this point, Vizcaino came upon a Republic Trash truck that was stopped at a traffic light. A passenger in the truck was able to get out, but the driver could not, Ryan told reporters Thursday. Vizcaino opened the door to the truck and wrestled with the driver, trying to climb over him, Ryan said. 'They were attempting to get the driver out of the car, several shots were fired at that point, and the driver was safely extracted from the truck.' Vizcaino then drove the truck a half mile before crashing on the bridge, Ryan said. He was arrested by State and Everett police at that point. He will face four counts of attempted armed carjacking, 2 counts of armed carjacking, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, armed assault to rob and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in property damage, prosecutors said. 1 person dead and multiple injured in fireworks explosion at Mohamed Ramadan concert in Egypt
One person is dead and multiple others are injured after a fireworks display malfunction at a Mohamed Ramadan concert Thursday night in a resort town on the north coast of Egypt. One of the fireworks canisters exploded the moment Ramadan came out on stage at the Porto Marina Theater, killing a member of the show's technical team responsible for operating the fireworks, according to Egypt's semi-official newspaper Al Ahram. The incident also injured at least six people, per the outlet's English counterpart. Ramadan, an Egyptian actor and musician, posted a video statement to his Instagram about the incident, extending his condolences to a victim he called "Hossam." Al Ahram identified the victim as Hossam Abdel Moneim, a 24-year-old graduate from Ain Shams University who worked in party planning and special effects for over a decade. "I extend my condolences to the family of Hossam, may God have mercy on him and grant him a place in his spacious paradise," Ramadan said in the video. "And grant patience to his loved ones, and his friends, and heal those who were injured." Ramadan said that he stopped the concert immediately after he saw what had happened. "I handled it like any human would, I went down to the audience and I helped get the injured to the ambulance," he said. "And I stopped the concert, and helped guide people so that their departure doesn't cause any crowd surge or additional accidents." Ramadan did not identify the victim beyond a first name, but alluded in his statement that the victim was working during the concert. Videos depicting the incident began circulating on social media shortly afterwards. One video shows Ramadan performing as an explosion go off near the stage. Seconds later, Ramadan can be heard saying "Stop, stop, stop!" before the music comes to a halt. Another video shows people in the audience carrying the body of a man who appears to be injured or deceased. Ramadan, who can be seen on the stage, is heard speaking into the mic, instructing them to bring the body on stage. The incident is being investigated by Egypt's Public Prosecution Office, according to Al Ahram. Ramadan has been gaining international recognition in recent years, releasing songs with French Montana, Future and Gims. His song, "Rayheen Neshar - Bum Bum" began going viral on TikTok in 2020. The artist posted to his Instagram that he will be performing again on Friday at another venue on Egypt's north coast.
