Edmonton Oilers smashing through yet another post-season wall in Stars goalie Jake Oettinger

Article content
What happened? The Kings are done and Kuemper sits dead last among all playoff goaltenders with a 3.74 goals against average. The Oilers lit him up for five goals three times and four goals once in dispatching Los Angeles in six games.
Vegas goalie Adin Hill? After closing out the Minnesota Wild with .906, .909 and .935 save percentages in the last three games of that series, he was going to be a problem in the second round.
What happened? The Oilers reduced his numbers to .857, .865 and .850 in the first three games, then Stuart Skinner posted shutouts in the last two, as Edmonton made very short work of the first place team in the Pacific Division.
Which brings us to Jake Oettinger. He was sensational against the Winnipeg Jets, allowing just 12 goals in that six-game series and posting save percentages of .935, .923, .969, .912, .957.
What's happening against Edmonton? It's been 12 goals against in three games and save percentages of .889, .880 and .750.

Emilus hits six-game injured list with knee injury, Riders prepare for Als

Saskatchewan Roughriders Samuel Emilus (19) celebrates a team interception against the Edmonton Elks \e during second half CFL action in Edmonton, Alta., on Sunday June 11, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franson. Saskatchewan Roughriders' receiver Sam Emilus is back on the injured list, this time for at least the next six games. According to the Riders' injury report, Emilus is dealing with a knee injury which he sustained late in Saskatchewan's Week 8 win over Edmonton. The star wideout returned to lineup a week prior after missing the previous four games with a foot injury. In his place, Regina product Mitch Picton slots back into the lineup, behind Tommy Nield. Mario Alford, Shawn Bane Jr., Daniel Johnson and Noah Zerr remain week-to-week on the one-game injured list on offense. On defense, Antoine Brooks Jr. also remains out. On the offensive line, LT Payton Collins also makes his return, after suffering an injury Week 1. Riders' struggles in Quebec Games in Montreal have not gone the way of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of late. The Riders have not won on the road against the Alouettes since 2021, when now Roughrider QB Trevor Harris was a member of the Als. 'I wish I knew [what made it hard to play there],' head coach Corey Mace told reporters Thursday. 'They have a really good atmosphere, their fan base comes out to support the team. And, I mean, they're just a good team.' Saskatchewan (6-1) is hoping to stay atop the CFL standings, while Montreal (5-2) is the best team in the East Division through seven games. 'You know you're in for a tough battle against those guys,' Mace added. 'Regardless of what team we were with, it always ends up a tough place to play.' Kickoff Saturday is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saskatchewan time.

Oilers eyeing another 8-year deal for a d-man, insider speculates. Good idea?

Article content This in from Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now, his speculation — and I want to stress this was speculation — that the Edmonton Oilers might be eyeing an eight-year contract extension for d-man Jake Walman, 29. Article content Said Stauffer, after first talking about a possible contract extension this summer for Mattias Ekholm: 'There is something that the Oilers can do that nobody else can do, and it maybe might relates more to a guy like Jake Walman. But they could offer an eight-year contract extension, and we have shorter terms coming to the next CBA, which takes place next summer.' Article content Stauffer asked Oilers GM Stan Bowman about the possibility of extensions for Ekholm and Walman. Article content Article content Said Bowman: 'We've had a couple of preliminary conversations with the agents. And I think that's one of the things that will happen over the next probably six weeks… to see if it's something that lines up well for them and for us. And I'm pretty hopeful that we can do that.' Article content Bowman continued: 'When you identify players that you like, that you think there's a future for, and they can help your team, not only in the coming year, but in the years beyond that, then I think it makes sense to try to get something done. So that's going to be something that we do over the next month, month and a half leading into training camp.' Article content My take Article content 1. Jake Walman cost their Oilers a first-round pick in this coming draft. He was well worth the price based only on his play in the 2025 playoffs. He was a solid, tough, two-way d-man in a Top 4 role, most often paired with John Klingberg. Article content Article content Walman showed a nasty streak and a wicked shot. He moved the puck smart and true. He got it quickly to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, right on their sticks in full stride. He stood up for his teammates. He was a significant addition to the Oilers. Article content For all that, a new eight-year deal for him seems like a stretch, given Walman's age and the aging and performance curves of NHL d-men, who fall off fast in their mid-30s. Article content Of course, as mentioned, this eight-year deal notion was just speculation on Stauffer's part but I bet he's not mentioning it if he hasn't heard it from a reliable Oilers source. Even then that doesn't mean it's happening. It means it's a possibility. Maybe it's something meant to stretch out and lower the annual cap hit so that Walman is affordable for the Oilers. But giving a 30 year-old d-man a big-money eight-year deal is a stretch in the NHL, at least if you're expecting that player to perform as a Top 4 d-man for the majority of that deal.
