Doctor who gave Matthew Perry ketamine and called him 'a moron' pleads guilty to role in his death

Daily Mail5 days ago
The doctor who gave actor Matthew Perry doses of ketamine before he overdosed and drowned in the hot tub of his LA home has pleaded guilty to playing a role in his death.
Dr. Salvador Plasencia appeared in federal court on Wednesday and was mostly quiet as the judge went over the plea agreement for nearly an hour.
Plasencia, who was often called 'Dr. P', was facing in a potential 40-year prison sentence had he not taken the plea deal.
He is expected to return to court on December 3 for sentencing and will face up to 10 years in federal prison.
When asked by the judge if he and his lawyers had considered all the possibilities of pleas and sentencing in the case, the 43-year-old physician replied, 'They've considered everything.'
He had previously pleaded not guilty, but in exchange for the guilty pleas prosecutors have agreed to drop three additional counts of distribution of ketamine and two counts of falsifying records.
The Santa Monica physician is the fourth person who was indicted on criminal charges in connection to the Friends' star's death on Oct. 28, 2023.
Jasveen Sangha, was known to her customers as the 'Ketamine Queen', is the only defendant who has not decided to take a plea deal in connection to the actor's death. She is slated to return to court August 19.
Sangha remains in custody in Los Angeles awaiting trial.
Others who have plead guilty include Perry's assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who discovered the actor's lifeless body in his hot tub.
The LA County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the actor — who had battled substance abuse issues throughout his life — died of 'acute effects of ketamine.'
Perry had been receiving ketamine infusion therapy as treatment for his depression, but the last session was a week and a half before he died, the medical examiner determined.
Ketamine is only in your system for three to four hours, which means it did not lead directly to his death.
'At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,' the medical examiner, Raffi Djabourian, concluded.
Two others — physician Mark Chavez, of San Diego and Erik Fleming, 54, of Hawthorne — also plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death.
In his plea agreement, Plasencia admitted he met Perry through another patient connected him with Perry.
He admitted supplying Perry with 20 vials of ketamine totaling 100 mg of the drug, along with ketamine lozenges and syringes about a month before the actor's death.
He also admitted enlisting Dr. Chavez, who supplied the drugs. In court documents, Plasencia texted Chavez: 'I wonder how much this moron will pay,' referring to Perry.
Federal prosecutors said Plasencia sold the drugs to the actor for $4,500. He also told Chavez to keep the supplies coming so they could become the actor's 'go-to'.
Perry - who had long struggled with addiction and staying sober - told Iwamasa to procure illegal drugs for him in late September 2023.
Iwamasa allegedly obtained the ketamine he gave to Perry from Plasencia and Fleming. The assistant reportedly met with Plasencia at least seven times between September 30 and October 28, 2023.
On the day of his death, Perry reportedly told Iwamasa to 'shoot me up with a big one,' and was injected with ketamine by the assistant three times, according to his plea agreement.
Prosecutors allege Iwamasa also began obtaining ketamine for Perry from Fleming and Sangha beginning in mid-October 2023.
After discussing prices with Iwamasa, Fleming allegedly coordinated the drug sales with Sangha, and brought cash from Iwamasa to Sangha's stash house in North Hollywood.
On October 24, 2023, while waiting for Sangha's ketamine to arrive,
In October 24, 2023, Fleming allegedly told Iwamasa that the ketamine was 'on its way to our girl,' referring to Sangha.

At least three victims shot in mid-Manhattan skyscraper; suspect 'neutralized'

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - A person who opened fire inside a midtown Manhattan skyscraper housing the National Football League headquarters and offices of several major financial institutions, including hedge fund giant Blackstone, has been "neutralized," the New York city police commissioner said. Police did not immediately make details of the shooting public, but a law enforcement source told Reuters at least one New York Police Department officer and two civilians were struck by gunfire and that the suspect was believed to be dead. The source said the information was preliminary, and the condition or extent of injuries sustained by the police officer and two others was not immediately known. The New York Post newspaper, citing unnamed police sources, reported that a gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle had opened fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper, wounding a police officer and a bystander. The Post reported they were in critical condition. The gunman, the Post reported, had barricaded himself inside the office tower, possibly on the 32nd floor of the building. A short time later, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Disch said on X: "At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized." The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue houses a number of financial firms, including Blackstone, the world's largest hedge fund, as well as KPMG and Deutsche Bank, along with the NFL headquarters and the Consulate General of Ireland. News media footage showed a large police presence in the area around the office tower. "There is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now," New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement on social media platform X as news of the shooting first surfaced. The FBI said agents from its New York field office were also responding to provide support at the scene.

Michigan Walmart customers used shopping carts and a gun to subdue a man who stabbed 11 people

Matthew Kolakowski was shopping for fishing gear and snacks with his daughter at a Michigan Walmart over the weekend when he heard an employee yelling 'he's got a knife' followed by sounds of screaming. Then he saw a man rushing toward the checkout counter. 'All of a sudden I see him pop up and I swear we locked eyes for a minute and I yelled at my daughter, 'Stay here.' So I just took off running,' Kolakowski said, recalling the moment he decided to confront the man accused of stabbing 11 people at the Traverse City store on Saturday. Bradford Gille was charged Monday with terrorism and 11 counts of attempted murder. Police said they had no apparent motive for the violent attack carried out with a 3 1/2 inch (nearly 9-centimeter) knife. The actions of Kolakowski and some other men drew effusive praise from Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea. Overnight, the strangers became online celebrities for their heroics as a video showing the confrontation spread swiftly on social media. Kolakowski said that as he followed the man out of the store, he saw him plunge his blade into an older woman outside. Having no weapon himself, Kolakowski grabbed a shopping cart, hoping to knock the man down as he gave chase. 'He just ran right behind her and buried his knife into her back, right in front of me,' Kolakowski said. 'He pulled the knife out of her and went to take off, then stopped and hesitated and turned around like he was going to go after her again. That's when he noticed me with the grocery cart ... I just went as hard as I could and just got him on his ankles with the grocery cart from behind.' Kolakowski, a 39-year-old disabled veteran, was quickly joined by another man with a shopping cart, stopping the man later identified by authorities as Gille. A third man pointed a gun toward the man, repeatedly demanding he drop the knife. He eventually put the knife down and Kolakowski said he jumped on the man, restraining him until police quickly arrived. 'Honestly, I didn't hesitate at all,' said Kolakowski, speaking from his home in nearby Kent City. Though he was wary of being stabbed himself, he said, 'I just kept going.' Shea said the 11 victims were men and women ranging in age from 29 to 84, including one Walmart employee. All were expected to survive, officials said. Authorities said Gille, 42, has a history of mental health problems and has been arrested or ticketed numerous times in the Petoskey, Michigan, area since 2001. He has also received jail sentences for assault and domestic violence-related offenses. In 2017, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity after being charged with damaging a burial vault and tipping over grave markers at a Ptoskey cemetery. And police in Petoskey reported speaking twice with Gille in recent days about loitering. In a statement Monday, the Petoskey Department of Public Safety said the agency sought and received a court order Friday to place Gille in protective custody, deeming him a risk to himself or others. But they could not find him — until the Traverse City stabbings occurred. Gille's mother told the Petoskey News-Review in 2007 that her son had been in a long-term cycle of mental illness. Beverly Gille at that time praised police and judges, whom she said were trying to help him. 'He's fine when he's on his medication,' she told the newspaper. 'The problem is his illness tells him that he is fine and doesn't need to take his medication.' At his arraignment Monday, Gille appeared agitated and seemed to suggest he was homeless. A not-guilty plea was entered for him, and bond was set at $100,000. Kolakowski said that as he and the other shoppers surrounded the man in the Walmart parking lot, it was clear that something was not right. He described the man as wild-eyed and sweating heavily and describing those in the store as 'bad, like he was making an excuse why he stabbed everybody." Kolakowski brother-in-law, Chris O'Brien, who recorded the video, said the 'crazy' scene unfolded incredibly fast and that Kolakowski's actions surely prevented several more stabbings. 'It's his courage that is the craziest part. It was something to witness,' he said. 'A guy was stabbing people and we were just next on his list if we didn't do something right,' O'Brien said. 'Matt was determined to make sure it was stopping then and there and he sure as hell did that.' ___
