Congress slams govt over problems in MGNREGA app
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said FAST is the self-declared motto of the Modi government and it actually stands for - 'First Announce Second Think'.
In May 2022, the Modi government introduced the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app in MGNREGA for digital verification of attendance and works, and ever since this was done the Congress had been highlighting the operational problems with NMMS and how it was damaging the letter and spirit of MGNREGA, Ramesh said in a statement.
'Now in a notification issued on July 8th 2025 the Union Ministry of Rural Development has finally acknowledged the various problems associated with the NMMS. It was clear from the beginning that uploading photographs from NREGA worksites would end up excluding genuine workers whose photos could not be uploaded due to connectivity issues,' he said.
Further, the NMMS cannot stop 'fake workers' appearing on the muster rolls, as fake workers can go twice a day to be photographed, get paid without working for a minute, he pointed out.
'What has come to light -- that fake and random photos are being uploaded --? only demonstrating the absolute uselessness of the NMMS,' Ramesh said.
However, the Modi government, post its acknowledgment of the issue, has identified solutions that are worse than the problem, he said.
The NMMS photos will now also be backed by physical verification by officers in-charge, he said, adding this proposed solution is going to waste the precious time of NREGA functionaries, from top to bottom.
Either they can verify photos, as is being mandated by the latest order, or they can perform their regular duties, he argued.
Ramesh pointed out that the Congress has consistently demanded several key changes to the Union government's implementation of MGNREGA, and the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj has echoed several of these, including immediate withdrawal of the unworkable and counterproductive NMMS model based on photo uploads and reaffirmation of task-based payments which is the essence of MGNREGA.

RTC workers threaten hunger strike over unmet demands
Hyderabad: TheTelangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) Workers Union has issued a warning to the state government, threatening to launch a mass hunger strike at Indira Park if long-pending workers' demands are not immediately addressed. The union's General Secretary, K Rajireddy, highlighted several critical concerns that have prompted this decision to call for a hunger strike. Among the key unresolved demands are wage revision, denied union recognition, and unpaid dues. Rajireddy stated, 'Despite Congress's 2023 election promise, the 2021 wage revision remains unimplemented. The previous BRS regime abolished welfare committees and banned unions—a policy the Congress government has yet to reverse. The government claims to have sanctioned 3,038 posts yet continues outsourcing drivers and conductors—a first in RTC's history.' Workers are also seeking a 100 per cent increase in the 2017 wage revision allowances. They demand immediae payment of 11 pending Dearness Allowances (DAs) from 2019 to 2024. Additionally, they seek arrears in bonds with five-year interest. There is also increased pressure on employees without job security or the regularisation of temporary staff. The Union demands immediate action on several fronts. These include forming a committee with union representation to draft RTC merger rules, withdrawing false police cases from the 2019 strike, ceasing outsourcing and commencing regular recruitment, compensating families of deceased/medically unfit workers, reviewing wrongful terminations under the Mahalakshmi scheme and breath analyser disputes, and holding elections for RTC's Credit Cooperative Society (CCS).

PM Modi to visit UK, Maldives from July 23
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-nation tour of the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to July 26, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Sunday. During the visit to the UK, Modi is expected to unveil the bilateral trade pact that the two sides announced on May 6. 'During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold wide ranging discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the entire gamut of India-U.K. bilateral relations. They will also exchange views on issues of regional and global importance,' said the Ministry of External Affairs in the official announcement. During the visit PM Modi is scheduled to meet King Charles III. Modi had announced the trade deal with the UK on May 6 describing it as 'ambitious and mutually beneficial'. Before announcing the deal on the social media, he had held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Starmer. The negotiation for the deal that witnessed several twists because of change of multiple governments in the UK started in 2022. The British government has described the deal as 'the biggest and most economically significant bilateral trade deal'. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal paid a two-day visit to the UK in June to lay the grounds for the unveiling of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Ministry of External Affairs said that during the visit, Modi will review the state of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), 'with a specific focus on trade and economy, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate, health, education and people to people ties.' On the invitation of Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi's state visit to Maldives will begin on July 25. Modi will be the 'Guest of Honour' at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the independence of Maldives on July 26. 'The two leaders will also take stock of the progress in the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,' adopted during the State Visit of the President of Maldives to India in October 2024', said the Ministry of External Affairs in the statement.
