Luka Doncic agrees to long-term contract extension with Lakers

Ever since the Los Angeles Lakers acquired superstar Luka Doncic six months ago, there has been a twinge of anxiety regarding whether he would sign a long-term contract extension with them this summer. Under the terms of the contract he came to L.A. with, he was able to opt out and become a free agent in 2026. But that will not be happening. On Saturday, the first day he was eligible to do so, he agreed to a three-year, $165 extension, per ESPN. "Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN," wrote Shams Charania. "The critical new deal keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer, eliminating his 2026-27 player option in place of the new contract." This extension puts the 26-year-old in position for an even bigger payday in a few years. "Doncic could opt out in 2028 and sign a new deal for 35% of the salary cap, which projects to five years and $417 million. In doing so, Doncic would recoup all the money lost when he was traded by the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he had been eligible to sign a five-year, $315 million supermax extension this summer." Doncic played well as a member of the Lakers this past season, but he was clearly out of shape and a bit hobbled. However, once they were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs, he instantly embarked on a physical transformation that has had everyone talking lately. Some people around the league feel that, as a result of his new physique, Doncic could be ready to put forth an MVP campaign this coming season.

Kendrick Perkins is picking 'skinny Luka' Doncic to win NBA MVP

Many are talking about the new, leaner and fitter version of Luka Doncic that has emerged this offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar has gotten on a stringent diet and workout plan, and based on photos and videos that have surfaced, his body has been transformed. Gone is the layer of blubber that enveloped his body over the last few years and hindered his efforts to get back on defense and stay in front of his man on that end of the floor. Now, his muscles are defined, and it is exciting news for Lakers fans and a nightmare in the making for the rest of the NBA. ESPN personality Kendrick Perkins gave Doncic credit for transforming his body and taking all the criticism the superstar has received to heart. 'Luka and the Los Angeles Lakers, they broke through the internet today because they're one,' Perkins said. 'They're one now. You see them? We ain't looking at the chubby, fat Luka, the beer-sipping Luka. We ain't looking at medium Luka. We looking at skinny Luka. I saw his jawline. I saw veins popping out of his ears. The man is in shape. and it's going to be a problem this year for the rest of the league.' In fact, Perkins proclaimed that the 6-foot-7 guard is his "early pick for MVP." 'The man is skinny,' Perkins added. 'By the way, he is my early pick for MVP. If we saw what we were getting out of Chubby Luka, imagine what we about to get out of damn skinny Luka. We about to get the best version of Luka Doncic.' It remains to be seen if the Lakers will win enough games for Doncic to have a real shot at the league MVP award, an award he hasn't won. But his quality of play and performance will be the most important thing. He already has career averages of 28.6 points on 46.8% field-goal shooting and 35% 3-point shooting, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game. If he was able to do that while fat, out of shape and banged up, it is scary to imagine how much better and more refined he could be while in terrific shape. His shooting efficiency and free throw shooting have lots of room for improvement, as does his ball security, and he can play better man-to-man defense. Improving in those areas would help the Lakers get closer to championship contention. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Kendrick Perkins is picking 'skinny Luka' Doncic to win NBA MVP

Highlights! Bashi Injects Life Into Vegas Card With Slick Submission

Promising prospect Austin Bashi delivered a dominant performance earlier tonight (Sat., Aug. 2, 2025) at UFC Vegas 108 LIVE on ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping short-notice replacement John Yannis with a first-round submission (rear-naked choke). Bashi, who turns 24 next month, was coming off a lackluster Octagon debut last January when he dropped a decision loss to prospect killer, Christian Rodriguez. This was an important spot for the young featherweight if we wanted to maintain the hype he carried coming over from the Contender Series. Bashi was originally scheduled to face Francis Marshall, but an injury to Marshall allowed Yannis to fill in on a few days notice. Heading into Saturday night, Bashi was a massive betting favorite and it showed right away. The talented prospect wasted no time exploding for a takedown and quickly turned the fight into a grappling match. Yannis was actually able to defend on the mat, but on his way up Bashi sneakily locked up the choke and forced Yannis to tap. It was pretty impressive.
