PETALING JAYA : The first of eight train sets for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was unveiled today by transport minister Loke Siew Fook and his Singaporean counterpart, Jeffrey Siow.
The transport ministries said the train sets will undergo off-site testing, which is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year, Bernama reported.
The tests will be conducted by RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd. RTSO will also operate the RTS Link service.
RTSO, the ministers said, will check the integration between the train and other rail systems, including the signalling system, platform screen doors and onboard communications.
'Carrying out an initial round of off-site testing at Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) allows RTSO to identify and resolve potential integration issues early, before commencing testing of the trains on the RTS Link tracks,' Bernama quoted Loke and Siow as saying.
Separately, RTSO chairman Khairil Anwar Ahmad said Train 01, which arrived in Singapore in April, will undergo offsite system integration testing at the SRTC in preparation for full integration and operation.
Train sets 02 to 05 have been transported to China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation's manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, where they are being assembled, he said.
Train sets 06 to 08 will undergo the same process, Khairil added.
'Once the assembly process is completed, these train sets will be transferred to the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Bahru for further testing and final preparations before being commissioned for passenger service,' Khairil said.
The RTS Link, targeted to begin passenger service by December 2026, will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru with Woodlands North in Singapore.
Once launched, the RTS Link will operate with eight driverless train sets, each comprising four cars and capable of carrying over 600 passengers a trip.
The RTS Link will have an overall peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction.
Meanwhile, in a statement, MRT Corp said as of May 31, track installation and structural works for key components of the RTS Link project — namely the Marine Viaduct, Bukit Chagar Station and Wadi Hana Depot — have been completed.
Interior works at the Wadi Hana Depot are now 80% complete and on track to achieve full completion by October this year, while installation of the Bukit Chagar Station's iconic roof facade is currently under way.
It also said the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex is progressing well, with superstructure works now at 90% completion, while facade installation is slated to begin in September 2025.
'As per the terms of the bilateral agreement, the next key milestone will be the dynamic testing of the RTS train system, scheduled for May 2026.
'This critical phase will see the train operating along the full alignment from the Wadi Hana Depot through to the stations, paving the way for operational validation and readiness.'

Tax rule change: No more 2pc deduction for deceased agents, dealers and distributors effective August 1, says IRB
PUTRAJAYA, June 30 — The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) will no longer accept the two per cent tax deduction involving deceased agents, dealers or distributors (Resident Individuals) (EPP), effective Aug 1. In a statement today, LHDN said the decision was made as the term 'individual' under Section 2 of the Income Tax Act (ACP) 1967 is defined as a living person or 'natural person'. 'Therefore, if an EPP has passed away, they are no longer categorised as an individual under this provision. 'In the event that income is still received after the death of the EPP, it must be managed by the executor, administrator, heir or legal representative and reported under the Deceased Person's Estate (TP) file,' said the LHDN. The statement added that the executor, administrator, heir or legal representative of the deceased must register the TP file at any LHDN office by completing the Notification of Taxpayer's Demise (CP57) form and submitting supporting documents, including a copy of the death certificate and the grant of probate or letter of administration. In this regard, LHDN advised the paying company as well as the heirs' representatives or estate administrators to take note of the ruling and act accordingly in managing the deceased's income, in line with existing tax laws and procedures. For users' convenience, LHDN said Form CP57 can be downloaded from its official portal via quick access at According to LHDN, under Section 107D of the ACP 1967, companies are required to make a two per cent tax deduction on cash payments to a deceased EPP. The deduction is applicable to resident individuals who have been appointed by the paying company as EPPs and who receive payments from sales proceeds, transactions or schemes carried out in that capacity. — Bernama

Ex-investment banker jailed 2 years, fined RM1mil for securities fraud
Former investment banker Ruwan Amaresh Shaun Ponniah also pleaded guilty to carrying out fund management activities without a licence. (Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : A former CIMB investment banker was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and fined RM1 million today for defrauding investors of RM201,000. Ruwan Amaresh Shaun Ponniah was sentenced by Kuala Lumpur sessions court judge Norma Ismail after he pleaded guilty to one charge of investment fraud under Section 179(b) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 (CMSA). The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) said the court took into consideration nine other similar charges under Section 179(b) of the CMSA. This consideration was made under Section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows the court to bundle related or admitted offences into a single sentence, it said in a statement. Ruwan, a former associate director of debt capital markets at CIMB Investment Bank, was arrested and charged by the SC last September with 10 charges under Section 179(b) of the CMSA and an additional charge under Section 58(1) of the same Act. The SC said Ruwan also pleaded guilty today to the one charge under Section 58(1) of the CMSA for carrying out fund management activities without a licence. The court sentenced him to two years' imprisonment and ordered the jail term to run concurrently with the first offence. Ruwan will have to serve an additional six months' jail if he fails to pay the RM1 million fine. The SC said Ruwan had falsely represented to seven investors that he would invest their monies in shares listed on the Malaysian and foreign stock exchanges. However, the monies were for other purposes without the investors' knowledge. The offences took place between October 2018 and June 2020. Ruwan's guilty plea was made pursuant to his application for a plea bargain under Section 172C of the Criminal Procedure Code. He had claimed trial to all the charges and was granted bail of RM210,000 with one surety. On Feb 5, upon Ruwan's application to the High Court for a reduction in the bail amount, the sum was reduced to RM105,000. However, Ruwan was unable to post bail and has been held in remand at Sungai Buloh prison.
