A Look Inside Karan Johar's Luxury Duplex Designed By Gauri Khan

News1807-07-2025
Designed entirely by Gauri Khan, the house mirrors Karan Johar's personality and, of course, is full of glamour.
Karan Johar's place is not a 'space that can be imitated", and Gauri Khan made sure of that. And for someone who is all about glamour and luxury, the place feels right. We're talking about his sea-facing duplex in Bandra, Mumbai, which is an 8,000-square-foot space located on Carter Road and valued between Rs 30–32 crore. Designed entirely by Gauri Khan, the house mirrors Karan's personality, which is modern, stylish and of course, full of glam. The interesting part is that he didn't even see it until it was fully done.
'I have no contribution to it. This is Gauri Khan's baby. The night we called really close friends for dinner was the night I saw the house for the first time. So when I was showing it, I was also seeing it," Karan told Architectural Digest India.
A Living Room With Dining Area
Karan's living room has been featured in several videos, including his collaboration with Asian Paints. The space is filled with large, soft sofas in various beige tones. To break the monotonous vibe, Gauri included a green and a blue one that gave the space a bit of contrast. A striking chandelier hangs from above and immediately catches the eye.
The area is not just for lounging, it also hosts casual work and friendly catch-ups. Just off the living room is a large dining table made of wood and marble that has seen plenty of celebrity visitors. Karan shared that he, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh had important discussions about Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in this very corner.
A Bedroom With A Walk-In Closet
Karan's bedroom is calm and personal. It has a soft bed, neutral colours and gentle lighting that make it feel peaceful. But what really stands out here is the closet that stores his collection of clothes and accessories from global luxury brands like Gucci, Prada and Balenciaga.
Right next to the closet is a separate glam room. There is a large mirror surrounded by lights to give it an old Hollywood-style dressing room feel. A vintage chair sits in front of it that completes the setup.
A Private Deck
Step outside, and it feels like a shift from modern to natural. The deck with tall plants arranged around white and blue outdoor furniture. Karan, describing the space, said, 'This feels like some kind of Amazonian jungle where greenery is coming at you from everywhere."
A Sleek Kitchen
Karan's kitchen is minimal and sharp. It includes the latest appliances, wooden cabinets and white-toned lighting that keeps the look clean and modern. The counters are spacious and the storage is well-planned, which makes the kitchen functional without looking overcrowded.
A Guest Bathroom That's All Copper
One of the most unusual parts of the home is the guest bathroom. Designed in copper tones, the space stands out for another reason – it is stocked with tiffin boxes. Yes, actual tiffins are placed on the shelves for guests to take when they leave.
Farah Khan, who toured the house for her YouTube channel, joked, 'We have to eat and poop at the same time!" To which Karan replied, 'We like to give people something on their way out."
Lower Level Office
The lower part of the duplex is dedicated to work. It includes a home office area, leather sofas and a bar where Karan hears scripts and has informal meetings. A wooden staircase with a glass railing and brass finishing connects the two levels.
'Gauri claims I am her best client, as I did not interfere even once! It would have been easy for me to keep checking in on the work, and I will admit, it was tough to not peek, but I did not go on site until it was all done. I trusted her taste and judgment implicitly," he told Architectural Digest.
'I travel so much, and when you come back, you want your personal space to not be anything like a hotel. And full credit to Gauri, she gave this space such a distinct identity, and also made this a home," the filmmaker added.
The apartment was purchased by Karan in 2010. According to MagicBricks, the property is priced at around Rs 40,000 per square foot.

Souza's 4 rare works to be auctioned this week

Panaji: A rare collection of four distinctive artworks by modernist painter of Goan origin, F N Souza, collectively valued at over Rs 1 crore, is set to lead the upcoming online auction by AstaGuru Auction House on July 29 and 30. The artworks include two pieces from his 'Head' series periods (1964 and 1985), a dynamic 1990 landscape, and a 1987 nude inspired by Khajuraho sculptures. 'Souza was a pioneering force in the Indian modernist art movement,' said Sneha Gautam, the director of client relations at AstaGuru Auction House. 'As a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group in the 1940s, he was instrumental in challenging conventional Indian artistic traditions and introducing a bold modernist sensibility, especially at a time when the country was finding its distinct artistic voice. ' Gautam said, 'His work played a key role in shaping the trajectory of modern Indian art, bringing modernist styles and ideas to the forefront.' The artworks span various styles and themes that the artist concerned himself with throughout his career. The curation also showcases Souza's command of and proficiency in varied mediums. Lot No. 37 and Lot No. 42 showcase his different takes on portraiture and are reminiscent of his 'Head' series. The series featured portraits influenced by European art movements that displayed the artist's inner turmoil through the depiction of distorted faces. While Lot No. 37 is a colourful untitled work executed using acrylic on paper in 1985, Lot No. 42 is a charcoal-on-canvas work from 1964. Lot No. 56 belongs to Souza's vast oeuvre of landscapes. Executed in 1990, the oil-on-canvas work exemplifies his visceral approach to environment and structure. With a dense web of jagged lines and rhythmic brushstrokes, the composition collapses foreground and background into a frenetic tangle of green, ochre, and blue. Lot No. 84 is an untitled pen-on-paper work executed in 1987. It reveals Souza's fascination with creating nude works and the inspirations he took from the erotic sculptures of the Khajuraho temples. Captivated by the uninhibited expression of human desire found in these ancient carvings, Souza drew from their raw physicality and symbolism, particularly in his depictions of the female nude and intertwined couples. 'Characterised by assertive lines, striking colours, and a fusion of abstraction and figuration, Souza's art drew inspiration from Cubism, Expressionism, and other European movements,' Gautam said. 'His paintings frequently explored existential and religious concerns, while also offering sharp critiques of social and political structures.' She said, 'With a distinctive visual language, his use of line and colour imbued his work with dynamic tension, often evoking both intensity and unease. Souza left behind an unrivalled legacy of rebellion, paving the way for generations of artists to come.'
