Is Joel Embiid's time with the Philadelphia 76ers running out? Analyst sounds alarm over recurring injuries

The Philadelphia 76ers are entering the 2025–26 season with uncertainty clouding their cornerstone star, Joel Embiid. After finishing last season with a brutal 24–58 record, largely due to injury-plagued absences from Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, the spotlight now shifts to the future of their 31-year-old MVP center.
While the team hopes for a bounce-back year, one respected NBA analyst believes Embiid might be nearing the end of his playing days.
Keith Pompey raises serious doubts about Joel Embiid's future
Joel Embiid's injury history has never been a secret. Since being drafted in 2014, he has missed a staggering 400 games due to a range of issues — from foot fractures and knee surgeries to facial injuries and back strains. What's changed now is how openly he's begun to speak about the toll it has taken on him.
'The way I was playing a year ago, it's not the way I'm playing right now. It sucks,' Embiid said during an emotional moment last season. 'But I believe... I probably need to fix the problem and then I'll be back at that level, but it's hard to have trust when you're not yourself. It's tough. You know you can do so much more.'
That level of transparency alarmed longtime 76ers reporter Keith Pompey. Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Pompey said, 'I think Joel (Embiid) might know the end is near… Rarely do you have a guy tell you how much pain he's in and how much they're going through.'

Pompey asserted that this wasn't inside information, but rather his interpretation of Embiid's comments and the tone of a recent ESPN feature.
Though Pompey admitted, 'I could be wrong. He could come out and have another MVP season,' his remarks reflected a growing concern shared by fans and analysts alike — that Embiid, despite his dominance, may not be able to withstand the physical grind much longer.
Philadelphia 76ers are looking to come back stronger
While Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are on track to return healthy, Embiid's status could significantly shape the 76ers' future roster decisions.
The team has said they expect him back for training camp, but questions remain.
So far, it is unclear if this is the beginning of the end or just another chapter in Embiid's rollercoaster career. It is fair to say that his availability will define Philadelphia's trajectory next season and beyond.

Barcelona honours Kobe Bryant with new jersey bearing brand logo

Spanish football club Barcelona is paying tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant with its second uniform launched Tuesday. The five-time European champion said its new jersey will replace the usual Nike swoosh logo 'with the 'Kobe Sheath' — the sword in the sheath logo that identifies the Kobe Bryant brand.' Barcelona said the club had a special relationship with Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash in Southern California in 2020. He made appearances alongside club members and first-team players during his visits to Barcelona and when the club visited the United States. Better is the only choice. FC Barcelona's purest expression of footballing perfection meets the constant growth mindset of Mamba Mentality.#NikeFootball@nike@ — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 29, 2025 'The shorts are black with Persian violet details and a textured snakeskin outline, a reference to the Black Mamba alter ego of Kobe,' Barcelona said. The change, made in collaboration with Nike, will last three seasons. 'All in all, it is part of a brand collaboration between the NBA legend and FC Barcelona that is born out of a shared culture of sporting excellence that characterised Bryant and is also part of FC Barcelona's DNA,' the club said. 'This agreement aims to keep alive that notion of brotherhood and at the same time create a link between Kobe fans and FC Barcelona to make the global impact of the American's legacy even greater amongst the sporting community and fans.' A rare 1st for Shohei Ohtani: Dodgers Star Strikes Out In First 4 Plate Appearances

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani had another first in his MLB career. Ohtani struck out in his first four plate appearances Tuesday night against the Cincinnati Reds, the first time he has done that in his eight seasons in the majors. It is the sixth time the Japanese superstar and reigning NL MVP has struck out four times in a game. It is the second time this season, with the other coming against San Diego on June 17. Against the Seattle Mariners on July 17, 2021, while playing for the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani popped up to the shortstop in his first at-bat and then struck out in his next four times at the plate. Cincinnati's Nick Lodolo became the 13th pitcher to strike out Ohtani three times in a game. The Reds left-hander got Ohtani to chase a curveball out of the strike zone in the first and fifth innings, and got him looking on a 94.6 mph fastball in the third. Graham Ashcraft then whiffed Ohtani on an inside slider in the seventh. Ohtani was one strike away from his first five strikeout game before he flew out to right field on a 2-2 count in the ninth inning of a 4-4 game. Ohtani came into the game on a nine-game hitting streak along with leading the majors with 100 runs scored. He is atop the NL in slugging (.620), total bases (254), OPS (1.001) and 38 home runs.
