‘Just cancel': Hey Neighbour triggers fan backlash as event postponed to December

News2421 hours ago
The highly anticipated Hey Neighbour music festival in Pretoria, initially scheduled for 29 to 31 August, has been postponed to December 2025.
New dates and a full lineup will be announced on 30 September.
Festival organisers cited sustainability concerns for the reschedule, apologising for poor communication and promising improved transparency going forward.
The highly anticipated Hey Neighbour music festival in Pretoria has been officially postponed to December, festival organisers announced on Thursday.
Initially scheduled to take place from 29 to 31 August, the two-day event was set to feature an international lineup including Doja Cat, Leon Thomas, and South Africa's very own DJ Black Coffee. New dates for the festival will be announced on 30 September, along with the unveiling of a full lineup.
In a statement, organisers said the decision to reschedule was made to 'ensure its continued success and sustainability.'
Acknowledging the disappointment caused by the change, Hey Neighbour CEO Glen Netshipise addressed the challenges faced: 'We understand the impact this has on our loyal festival-goers, sponsors, and artists. We also recognise that our communication around the challenges we've faced hasn't been as clear as it should have been, and for that, we sincerely apologise.' Netshipise promised improved transparency moving forward, saying: 'We are committed to ensuring that everyone stays informed as we work towards delivering an even better festival in December 2025.'

For ticket holders, there's some reassurance. All previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled dates, while refunds are set to be processed and paid by 10 October 2025. Organisers confirmed they are also in discussions with the initially booked artists to accommodate the new December schedule. Despite the promises, many festival-goers expressed disappointment and frustration over the change.
Social media was flooded with complaints from disheartened fans, who highlighted issues like pre-booked flights and accommodation, as well as the lengthy timeline for refunds. One disgruntled commenter on the festival's Instagram page wrote: 'This is disappointing! Our flights and accommodation that have been booked? Just cancel this whole festival and allow Daisies to show you how it is done! Also, why are we waiting three months for a refund? What has happened to the monies? Who is scamming who here?'
Another frustrated comment read: 'If Doja's not there, I'm not going. What was going to be unsuccessful if it was going to be held in August? Since the moving of dates was to 'ensure success'? Like, you're saying that you're going to be more open and transparent, then don't tell us what's happening! Disappointed.'

Conrad Koch brings the ‘Puppet Power' with hilarious new show

In the queue to one of Conrad Koch's sold-out shows at the National Arts Festival were audience members, young and old. With his new show, Puppet Power, the comedian and puppeteer's routine walks a fine line between mature political commentary and rapid-fire puns. While the adults in the audience might get big laughs from Koch's main puppet, Chester Missing's political riffs, the younger people might have more appreciation for characters like Gunter the mosquito or Hilton the ostrich (who's also a bit of a bully). There's basically something for everyone in the show, and Koch makes sure the audience feels involved by making the show interactive. In this high-energy show, Koch's first puppet segment is with Chester Missing. He hilariously unpacks Cyril Ramaphosa and company's visit to the White House earlier this year and the SA 'refugees' who went to the US upon Donald Trump's invitation. He also goes into the GNU with jokes for several of SA's political parties. The overall point in the first segment is that 'everyone is a puppet,' especially those in power. Everyone is being influenced in some way or bending to someone else's will. After that, the show pivots into more silly territory, with an open mic set by Gunter the mosquito, who delivers puns about being an insect. Koch fires off the jokes almost at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it rate. He also brings out his other beloved character, the Afrikaans teacher Mr Dixon, who is one of the show's highlights. Towards the end, Koch has a funny segment with DJ Hoodie, where all the punchlines are excerpts from various pop songs. He ends the show by calling up a member of the audience and putting a dinosaur costume on them, turning them into a puppet, too. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Conrad Koch (@theconradkoch) Puppet Power provides a solid hour of entertainment and genuine laughs, mostly hitting all the right notes. Koch says that with Puppet Power, he is aiming for a particular type of tone. 'What I mean by that is that it's fun, it's family accessible, it's politically progressive, but not shouty about it. So, everyone can come and enjoy the show, but there's a particular politics coming out of it,' he says. 'The core factor is having fun and creating a shared space where South Africans can laugh together,' Koch adds. 'The concept of Puppet Power is that we have the power to push back against the fact that we are being controlled by the media, by social media influencers, etc.' In terms of making the show more fun for families, Koch says: 'I want parents to be able to bring their 12-year-old to the show. They won't get the political jokes, some will, but they generally won't, but they'll enjoy the rest of the show.' 'There are dad jokes, there are characters, someone's parent is going to become a dinosaur. Creating that fun environment is something I am aiming to do.'

Hannah Laing: Organiser, headliner and sold-out star of debut Doof festival

DJ and producer Hannah Laing is fulfilling a dream of bringing her own festival to her home city this weekend. Doof in the Park is her debut one-day event at Camperdown Park in Dundee on Saturday. All 15,000 tickets for the gig sold out within a week, before any other artists were announced, showing just how popular the 30-year-old has become. Hannah, who began DJing as a teenager in local bars and clubs, said the event was the biggest project she had taken on to date. "I've put a lot of pressure on myself and given myself a lot more work," she told BBC Scotland News. "But it just matters to me so much. I've been heavily involved in every aspect of the organisation and I just want it to be a great experience for people." Hannah gained widespread attention after the Covid pandemic with her edit of the early 2000s pop track Murder on the Dancefloor, which went viral on social media. Her profile quickly grew, and in 2023, her track Good Love, a collaboration with vocalist RoRo, reached the UK top 10 and was certified platinum. Since then, she has performed at major festivals including Glastonbury, Creamfields, TRNSMT and Parklife, and began a residency at Ibiza's legendary HI club earlier this year. Despite her success, it was only a few years ago she was still working full-time as a dental nurse, never imagining she'd one day be running a festival in her home city. "I don't even think it has hit me yet," she said ahead of the gig. "When I was working as a dental nurse, it was always just a hobby at weekends and, of course, I would have loved it to be my career. "Never did I think it would go this far, but I'm so happy it has, and no more teeth!" Doof in the Park will feature three stages, each reflecting Hannah's style and the spirit of her brand, Doof, named after the heavy beats of her musical sound. The main stage will be headlined by Dutch trance legend Armin van Buuren, alongside former Radio 1 DJ, Judge Jules. "I'm totally inspired by that 90s sound, and that really reflects my DJ sets and my production," she said. "That's why I wanted to put those artists on the main stage, because that's the sound I truly love." The second stage will feature newer artists such as Charlie Sparks and Jezza & Jod. Theirs is a style Hannah regularly plays, and she recently collaborated with Sparks on a track from her upcoming Into The Bounce EP. Scottish talent is also front and centre, with the third stage spotlighting local names including Billy Morris and Paul Findlay. "Stage three is The Highlander stage," Hannah said. "I did my residency in The Highlander in Ibiza and I just wanted to pay my respects to that because that's where my journey began. "I wanted to put the local Dundee DJs on that stage and give them that good experience I used to have at The Highlander." Hannah believes the range of music across the three stages will attract a broad crowd. "I knew when I announced a festival for Dundee there would be so many older people who would come, as well as the younger ones," she said. "So I really wanted to have something for everybody." Camperdown Park has hosted major music events before, including Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2023 and Carnival 56 in 2017. Both attracted large crowds and Hannah played at both. Now, she returns as the organiser and headliner of her own sold out festival and she said it felt like a full circle moment. "It's surreal," she said. "I know it's such a good spot for a festival, and it's ten minutes from my house." For Hannah, holding the event in Dundee was never in question. "There's a major gap here," she said. "We don't have anything like it. "People who are into dance music here usually need to travel, so I wanted to bring something new and fresh to people's doorstep." Hannah says supporting the local economy has been central to her plans and has tried to keep everything as local as possible - from the traders to security staff. She also hopes the event will help impact local businesses such as hotels, restaurants and beauty salons. "With everything that it brings, it's great for our wee city." Although Doof in the Park is a debut event, Hannah is already thinking long term. "This is definitely something I'd like to do yearly," she says, "I'd love that." "It's so good for Dundee."

Tired Elephant Needs 5 Minutes to Herself and Parents Everywhere Can Relate

Tired Elephant Needs 5 Minutes to Herself and Parents Everywhere Can Relate originally appeared on PetHelpful. Sometimes we just need a break. Whether it's an hour with no cell phone or a quick nap on the couch, everyone needs to recharge once in a while. Apparently, elephants need breaks too! In a video shared by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, we get a glimpse of just how similar elephants are to humans. As the clip starts, we meet Lemeki, a teenage elephant who is lying in a massive pile of red dirt. It is clear from her demeanor that she just wants a snooze. However, her herd mate, Ndotto, wanted her to get up and play! Human parents can relate to this need for just a few minutes of peace and quiet—or in this case a roll in the dirt! Lemeki tries so hard to let Ndotto know she is not interested in tossing dirt, but he just does not seem to pick up on the clues she's giving! Lemeki uses one of her hind legs to gently kick in his direction, but he doesn't budge. He continues to encroach on her personal space like a brother who sits really close to you but then says, 'I'm not touching you!' According to the keepers, Lemeki's relaxation time is important to her. She continues to let Ndotto know that she just needs a few minutes of alone time. He is persistent and continues to throw dirt, just trying to entice continues to kick in his direction and even gives a little sighing sound. Although she never makes contact with him, he eventually got the hint and moved on to another sibling. Comments from fans did not disappoint, and here are a few highlights: 'HAHAHA! The drama here is so much better than the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills!' 'I do the same thing when I'm laying down resting and my husband bothers me, LOL!' 'Dust bathing looks like such a Zen spa activity!' After watching Lemeki's attempt at napping, you can swipe left to see a video of Ndotto tossing dirt with another herd sibling, Losioto. She obviously shares his love of creating dust clouds, and becomes the playmate that Ndotto wanted all along!
