The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on Monday. A highly respected figure in global media, entertainment and sports ecosystems, Sanjog will assume office as the seventh CEO of the ICC.

ICC Chairman, Jay Shah said: 'I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC.
'His deep understanding of the global sports as well as M&E landscape combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan's perspective and passion for technology will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years. Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets.
'We considered several exceptional candidates for this position, but the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog. The ICC Board Directors look forward to working closely with him, and I would like to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC.'
Sanjog's appointment follows a global recruitment process launched by the ICC in March. The role attracted over 2,500 applications from candidates across 25 countries, reflecting the international appeal and significance of the position. Candidates ranged from leaders associated with sport's governing bodies to senior corporate executives from across sectors.
Sanjog Gupta, ICC CEO-designate, commented: 'It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide. Cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology deployment/adoption could act as force-multipliers for the Cricket movement around the world .'
'I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket's evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC Member Boards to build on our strong foundations.'

On Dhoni's 44th birthday, AB de Villiers recalls: 'He was an intimidating player'

New Delhi: On the 44th birthday of former India captain MS Dhoni, South Africa legend AB de Villiers recalled him as an 'intimidating player to play against' while adding that he had a 'fantastic career'. Dhoni's international career highlight was his three coveted ICC titles - 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy - as captain along with other bilateral and continental achievements. 'It was very difficult to plan for MS Dhoni. When he was on song, nothing worked. Later on, we discovered that sometimes you could get away with wide deliveries with the seam, especially in the back end of his innings. We tried it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. "The guy's class - not many game plans worked against him. I have a lot of respect for him and his achievements throughout his career. He was definitely an intimidating player to play against. What a fantastic career he had," De Villiers said on JioHotstar's '7 Shades of MS Dhoni'. Former India selector and cricketer Kiran More recalled his first impression of Dhoni and said he saw a spark in the wicketkeeper-batter and felt something special about him. "At that time, if you looked at our batting order, you had Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman - all these players. Yuvraj Singh was also there. But I felt we needed an aggressive player, who could come and hit fours and sixes, utilise the Powerplay, make runs in 15 overs, and also in the middle overs. "We were looking for someone who could hit sixes and boundaries — that kind of aggressive player wasn't visible. See, the top players were all of one mold. But MS Dhoni's strength — that power-hitting — we were looking for a different kind of player like that, to balance the batting order. "If you want to make 100 in 10 overs, you can. We gave many wicketkeepers chances, but the spark we saw in Dhoni — I felt this boy is something special, something different. We were taking chances. He was raw. From there, we picked him and gave him a chance," he said. Former India batter Mohammad Kaif, speaking on the same show, looked back at Dhoni's iconic breakthrough performance against Pakistan during the tour of India in 2005 and the surprise promotion up the batting order. 'Matches against Pakistan are always pressure matches - Ganguly thought, let's promote MS Dhoni up the order. He might play a cameo. No one knew he would hit 140. No one in the dressing room knew. First surprise - he's at number three. Then he starts hitting. He used to hit lofted shots - over point, over mid-off. We thought this guy can't play a long innings. How wrong we were! As his innings progressed, he kept hitting - in the Powerplay, spinners, fast bowlers - everyone got hit. "After the Powerplay, he still kept playing his shots, rotated strike, hit more. He knew he had to play fast, but also knew that a quickfire 30 wasn't enough. He knew it was a do-or-die match. If he flopped at number 3, he wouldn't get further chances because he had already gotten a few earlier. He didn't play under pressure; he played his natural game," he said. Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame last month along with Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Daniel Vettori, Sana Mir and Sarah Taylor. Across formats, Dhoni accumulated 17,266 runs, effected 829 dismissals behind the stumps, and played 538 international matches — a testament to his consistency, fitness, and longevity. "It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever," Dhoni had said. Though Dhoni has retired from all forms of international cricket, but he is consistent with IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, whom he led to five titles. "Happy birthday to @msdhoni, a rare OG, who turned pressure into poetry with every move. You proved that greatness isn't born, it's built — one decision, one run, one quiet triumph at a time," Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin extended his warm greeting to Dhoni on his birthday.

Sanjog Gupta named ICC's new CEO, to take charge with immediate effect

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday named Sanjog Gupta as its seventh chief executive officer (CEO), almost six months after Geoff Allardice had stepped down after a four-year stint at the global governing body for cricket. Prior to the current role, Gupta was the CEO of the sports and live entertainment segment at JioStar, India's largest media conglomerate. Ishan Chatterjee will replace him as the new CEO of sports at JioStar, according to a source in the know. He was earlier the chief business officer, sports revenue, SMB (small and medium businesses) and creator at JioStar. Allardice had stepped down as the CEO of ICC after four years in January. This was followed by a global recruitment process launched by the ICC in March, which attracted over 2,500 applications from candidates across 25 countries. 'These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen and opportunities such as the women's game scale in popularity. Cricket's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology deployment or adoption could act as force-multipliers for the cricket movement around the world,' Gupta said. He further added, 'I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket's evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC member boards to build on our strong foundations.' The ICC's human resource and remuneration committee had reviewed and shortlisted 12 candidates, which was followed by the nominations committee unanimously recommending Gupta. Jay Shah, chairman, ICC, subsequently approved the decision after further assessment and evaluation. 'I am pleased to announce that Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialisation, which will be invaluable for the ICC,' Shah said in a statement. 'His deep understanding of the global sports as well as media and entertainment landscape combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan's perspective and passion for technology will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years. Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets,' he said. Gupta brings with him over two decades of cross-functional experience and a proven expertise in building successful consumer franchises, ICC said in a statement. He started his journey as a journalist and joined Star India (now JioStar) in 2010. Over the years, he held multiple leadership roles in content, programming and strategy before becoming head of sports at Disney and Star India in 2020. The sports portfolio at Star India scaled across consumer and commercial objectives with emphasis on long-term growth and operational efficiency under his leadership, ICC stated in its statement. Additionally, Gupta played a crucial role in developing and executing multi-language, digital-first, and women-centric sports coverage. This was followed by Gupta heading the sports division at JioStar in November 2024 after Viacom18 and Disney Star's merger. At JioStar, he played an important role in scaling the growth of marquee cricket properties like ICC events and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also worked on expanding the popularity of global sporting events such as the Premier League and Wimbledon and scaling the business across consumer and commercial objectives, apart from establishing domestic sports leagues like the PKL (Pro Kabaddi League) and ISL (Indian Super League), the statement said.
