How Liverpool squad and football world bid farewell to team-mate Diogo Jota

The
Liverpool
squad were united in their grief as they said farewell to team-mate
Diogo Jota
at the forward's funeral in Portugal on Saturday.
A service for the 28-year-old father-of-three, who married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso almost a fortnight ago, and his brother Andre Silva was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, following their deaths in a car crash on Thursday.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson each carried a floral tribute in the shape of a red shirt bearing the respective numbers of the two brothers.
Head coach Arne Slot and the majority of the squad were present, as were Michael Edwards – the man who signed Jota from Wolves in 2020 when he was sporting director and is now chief executive of football for owners Fenway Sports Group – current sporting director Richard Hughes and head of physiotherapy Lee Nobes, who would have spent many hours with the player during his injury lay-offs.
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who was unable to attend his own father's funeral due to Covid restrictions four years ago, is on international duty with Brazil and so could not be present but posted a poignant message on Instagram which read: 'Usually, I post things that make sense but, today, nothing makes sense.
'Once again, an ocean separates me from 'saying goodbye' to someone I love. But I know that I am well represented by my club mates.
'To you, my friend Rute, just know that you will never walk alone, we will be with you as soon as possible.'

Many of Jota's former team-mates were present, including ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who on Friday laid flowers at the makeshift shrine outside Anfield; James Milner; Thiago Alcantara, who signed in the same transfer window as Jota; Caoimhin Kelleher; Fabinho; and former Wolves and Portugal team-mate Joao Moutinho.

Manchester City's Portuguese duo Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, another international colleague, were also there, while his best friend Ruben Neves was a pallbearer, having flown in from Florida after playing for Al-Hilal in the Club World Cup on Friday night.
Jota's former Wolves boss, who is now Nottingham Forest head coach, Nuno Espirito Santo, also attended the service.
'I can't even imagine the pain of the family, of Rute, of the children, of the parents,' Silva told Portuguese broadcaster TVI.
'I must talk a little about Jota, who was a great friend to all of us. His career, although not the most important thing, speaks for itself.
'More important than that, as a person, the memories that remain. Jota will remain in our hearts forever. He will always be present at all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, national team gatherings, PlayStation or card games.
'It is a very tough episode for all of us, because we spent a lot of time together. The memories I have with him are fantastic. These happy memories will remain, he will be present in every victory.
'We were rivals and team-mates for many years. He became a great friend. He was present at my wedding. Unfortunately, I wasn't at his, because I was at the Club World Cup. It is a family that will always be with us and that we will try to preserve.'

Players from Penafiel, the team for whom Jota's brother played, also attended.
A wake was held on Friday for the pair before the coffins were carried into church on Saturday morning followed by mourners, led by Jota's wife and family.
After the service, which was broadcast to hundreds standing outside, they were taken to the cemetery next to the church for a private ceremony. A seventh-day mass will be held on Wednesday.
Jota's national team manager Roberto Martinez, who was also in attendance, said: 'They are really sad days, as you can imagine, but today we have shown we are a very large but close family.
'It was essential for us that, [with] Andre Silva and Diogo Jota, we are together and we will always be together and their spirit will be with us forever.
'Thank you very much for your messages, for your support and everything that we have received [from] all over the world. It means a lot and, today, we are all one football family.'
Reports say that Liverpool have committed to paying out the remainder of Jota's two-year contract to his family.

Tributes continue to be left at Anfield, where Everton manager David Moyes and assistant Alan Irvine laid flowers on Saturday with the message: 'With heartfelt sympathy, from David Moyes and everyone at Everton Football Club.'
Manchester City-supporting brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher paid their own tribute at Oasis' comeback gig at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday night when, during the final bars of Live Forever, a picture of Jota was displayed to cheers and applause. – PA

Arsenal confirm arrival of Spanish midfielder Zubimendi

Arsenal have confirmed the arrival of Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad on a five-year contract. The Spain international, who turned down Liverpool last summer, was heavily linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks despite being understood in March to have a pre-agreement to join Arsenal. With Mikel Arteta having made the 26-year-old his primary midfield target as Arsenal attempt to bridge the gap after three successive runners-up finishes in the Premier League, Zubimendi's signing represents a major boost after the departures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey at the end of their contacts last week. Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault – allegations he denies – three days after leaving. Photo by Tobias SCHWARZ / AFP) Arsenal are believed to have been searching for midfield replacements since last summer, with Zubimendi emerging as their preferred option thanks to his impressive displays for Real Sociedad and Spain. Their attempts to sign him last summer alongside Mikel Merino – who left Real Sociedad for about £32m – are understood to have been rejected because the Spanish side did not want to lose both players in the same transfer window. Arsenal were able to secure a pre-agreement in March after continuing talks. The fee is believed to be slightly more than his release clause of £51m after they fought off late interest from Madrid, whose new manager, Xabi Alonso, coached Zubimendi for Real Sociedad's B side. 'Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me,' Zubimendi told Arsenal's website. 'It's a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come.' Brentford's Christian Nørgaard is also expected to complete his move to Arsenal after the clubs agreed a deal worth up to £15m, and Arsenal are understood to have discussed personal terms with Chelsea's Noni Madueke and are weighing up whether to bid for the England international. Arteta said of Zubimendi: 'Martín is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team.' Guardian

‘He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room' – Heartbroken Trent Alexander-Arnold pays tribute to Diogo Jota

Trent Alexander-Arnold has described his former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota as 'someone who lit up a room'. Liverpool forward Jota died along with his brother, Andre Silva, following a car accident in Spain on Thursday. Alexander-Arnold is currently at the Club World Cup in the United States with new side Real Madrid having left Anfield at the end of their title-winning 2024-25 season. Speaking after Real's quarter-final victory over Borussia Dortmund in New York on Saturday, Alexander-Arnold told DAZN: 'Some things are bigger than the game. 'It has been difficult but it's been very emotional, very heart-warming to see the footballing world uniting and come together to show their love and support to him and his family, and obviously his brother as well. 'So although it's been difficult, it's also been a nice showing out from everyone, all clubs, all people, uniting and showing love and support for what must be a mind-blowingly hard time for the family. 'I've been in and around him and his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his parents, his amazing three children. 'It's truly, truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. It's something that you would never, ever expect. 'He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room when he was in it. I shared the dressing room (with him) for five years (and have) amazing memories on and off the pitch with him. 'It goes without saying he will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in all our memories for the amazing man and player he was.'

Liverpool great couldn't attend Diogo Jota's funeral due to family tragedy

Liverpool icon Ian Rush has been hit hard by the recent passing of Diogo Jota, with the tragedy bringing back harrowing memories of Hillsborough. The club's all-time top scorer was deeply affected by the news that 28-year-old Jota and his brother Andre died in a car accident last Wednesday night. The Reds' squad travelled to Porto for the funeral in Jota's native Gondomar. For Rush, the events have stirred up feelings from 1989, when 97 Liverpool fans tragically lost their lives, leaving an indelible mark on Merseyside. Rush said: "At Liverpool we have always regarded ourselves as one big family. Now one of our family has gone, so we all have to join together and help one another. The last few days have shown that. "It was the same with Hillsborough, but on a far bigger scale because of how many lost their lives and how many families were left devastated. It doesn't matter who you are, a player or a supporter, we all stick together." Adding a personal note to the sad occasion, Rush shared his own loss, which prevented him from attending Jota's funeral: "I was invited to Diogo's funeral, but what has happened with my brother passing it was impossible to go. "He hadn't been well for some time, but like Diogo it hasn't really hit home yet. I was in the middle of helping with Gerald's funeral when the news broke about Diogo. To be honest it's been hard to take in. "Diogo was a great player, probably the best finisher at the club. He always gave 100 percent. He would make a difference whether he started or came on as a substitute. He would never dominate the headlines and that was the same off the pitch. "He was a real down to earth person, a real gent. He just got on with things. He will be sadly missed for the special person he was as much as for what he did on a football field for Liverpool and Portugal. "This is especially hard for the Liverpool players who will soon be back in pre-season training. They are just expected to get on with the job but they are just human beings at the end of the day who experience the same emotions as the rest of us. "Some players will be affected more than others. I think right now it's been hard for everyone to take in what has happened. You try to continue as normal. but that is impossible. It's so weird, and for some there will be a delayed reaction because the enormity of what has happened hasn't sunk in yet. "I believe when someone dies you get on with things and it's only a few weeks later that the full extent of the awful loss gets you. You know you have to get on with life but that's hard. Diogo will never be forgotten because he has embraced everything Liverpool." The passing of Jota has also stirred up memories of the heartbreaking death of Gary Speed, a fellow Welsh international who shared a close bond with Rush, reports the Mirror. He said: "Look at [Wales international] Gary Speed who died almost 14 years ago. "He has never been forgotten. Like what happened with Gary it's about rallying round and supporting the families. It's so tragic, Diogo only just having got married and leaving three young children. "It's going to be difficult for them, but we have to be there for them when needed. That was the case with Gary. The football world came together and he is still missed to this day. Wales loved Gary Speed as Portugal loved Diogo Jota, and Liverpool did as everyone can see with the scenes around Anfield."
