The Mercedes-Branded F1 Electric Bike Looks Beautiful but Is So, So Heavy

WIRED01-04-2025

As we reported last week, even electric-auto maker Rivian is getting in on that sweet, sweet electric bike action. And at first glance, the N+ Bikes Mercedes-AMG F1 electric bike looks to be another bike in a continuing trend of auto manufacturers making and selling much smaller motor-powered vehicles.
But unlike Ford's electric bike, this specific class II ebike isn't made by Mercedes. Even if it has the iconic three-pointed star on the frame (and it is an officially licensed product of Mercedes AMC Petronas Formula One Team), it's designed and manufactured by N+ Bikes, based out of California.
The aluminum, fully rigid frame has a sleek, race-car appeal. Its matte black color pops with well-placed Petronas green (aka turquoise) highlights in the interior of the fork and chain stays, a nod to Formula One fans. The bike's cockpit looks like a miniature Mercedes dashboard, complete with two retro speedometers—one for speed and the other for watts. The former tops out at 60 mph, despite the fact that the motor legally has to cut out when speeds reach 20 mph. Still, if you're a Mercedes fan, this will probably matter to you that the bike is Mercedes-branded, not Mercedes-made.

What about the stats? E-spec-wise, the bike has a powerful motor for a commuter, 750 watts, that lives in the rear-wheel hub and provides four modes of power from Normal to Race. The 48-volt battery lives in the down tube and offers an advertised range of 70 miles.
There's space to store an additional 48-volt battery (sold separately) in the very thick and futuristic-looking seat post. Neither of the batteries are easily removable, making it a challenging bike to charge from the office or to use in a cold-weather destination, where batteries often need to be brought inside.

Motor racing-Former Ferrari boss Montezemolo becomes a McLaren Group director

By Alan Baldwin LONDON (Reuters) -Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo has joined the board of historic rival McLaren, a move that would have been unimaginable not so long ago. A filing with Companies House by Abu Dhabi-owned McLaren Group Holdings, which controls Woking-based sportscar maker McLaren Automotive, registered Montezemolo as a director on June 27. The 77-year-old Italian joined Ferrari in 1973 as founder Enzo Ferrari's assistant and became team manager in 1974, a year before the late Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda secured his first title. He also presided over the Formula One team during a golden era when Michael Schumacher won five of his career seven titles between 2000-2004 and served as chairman of both Ferrari and parent FIAT. McLaren and Ferrari, the two oldest and most successful teams in Formula One history, have been rivals for decades and were involved in a notorious 'Spygate' scandal that erupted in 2007. British-based McLaren were stripped of all their championship points and fined a record $100 million over a dossier of stolen Ferrari technical documents found in the possession of McLaren's chief designer. Both Ferrari and McLaren are under different management now, with Montezemolo resigning his roles at the Italian luxury sportscar maker in 2014 and focusing on other business interests. CYVN, majority-owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, created McLaren Group Holdings in April after completing its acquisition of McLaren Automotive. The group includes a non-controlling stake in McLaren Racing, the Formula One team whose majority shareholder is Bahrain's Mumtalakat and which operates completely independently. Paul Walsh, executive chairman of McLaren Racing, is also one of the nine directors of McLaren Group Holdings, while McLaren team principal Andrea Stella previously worked for Ferrari. McLaren are the reigning Formula One constructors' world champions while Ferrari last won a title in 2008. Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton, who took his first title for McLaren in 2008, is now driving for Ferrari. News of Montezemolo's new role was greeted with some amazement in Italy. "Montezemolo-McLaren: What a slap in the face to Ferrari," said sports newspaper Tuttosport in a headline. ANSA news agency quoted Montezemolo as saying his heart "is and always will be red" and his new role was on the automotive side and did not involve Formula One.

Norris tops final practice for F1 Canadian GP ahead of Piastri

Luca Barsali/LiveMedia-IPA/ZUMA Press Wire/dpa Lando Norris led an one-two for McLaren ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri in the final practice for the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday. It was a repetition of Friday's second practice result, with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen also completing the top three. Advertisement Ahead of qualifying later, Norris clocked 1 minute 04.324 seconds, 0.118s faster than championship leader Piastri. Verstappen was 0.210s off the pace. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were fourth and fifth for Ferrari, respectively, followed by the Mercedes cars of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Piastri tops the drivers' standings 22 points ahead of Norris. Tension between the two title contenders peaked at the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks ago when they collided with three laps left to the end of the race, with Norris braking too late and running into the back of the championship leader. Advertisement While Piastri finished the race in fourth, Norris couldn't cross the finish line and missed some crucial points. Verstappen, meanwhile, was second in Montreal and will try to be back on the top of the podium at Red Bull's home race in Austria, but needs to watch out as he's one penalty point away from a race ban.

F1 practice makes perfect as Norris pips Piastri

McLaren wrapped up practice for the Austrian Grand Prix with Lando Norris leading Formula One pacesetter Oscar Piastri in another team one-two at the top of the time sheets ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Norris, second in the standings 22 points behind Piastri after 10 of the season's 24 races, lapped the Red Bull Ring with a best time of one minute 04.324 seconds - 0.118 quicker than his Australian teammate. Verstappen was 0.210 off the pace, with a big spin at the last corner at the end of the session. He was followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in fourth and fifth. McLaren topped two of the three sessions, with Mercedes' George Russell fastest in the opening practice on Friday but sixth on Saturday that was much warmer - and getting hotter. Oscar Piastri almost loses it at Turn 9 during FP3 😵 — Formula 1 (@F1) June 28, 2025 "That's why it went a little bit belly-up for us. We were quite competitive until the end, and then you can see really it goes above a certain threshold of temperature and we lose performance," Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff told Sky Sports television. "The McLarens in high-speed (corners) are going to be very difficult to match. "We changed the balance a bit yesterday and that was in a direction that wasn't so perfect. It came back more today, but then the track temperature developed so drastically during the session, we went from 33 degrees to 42 and that makes a big difference." Mercedes had Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli seventh, ahead of Aston Martin's Lance Stroll, Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto completing the top 10. Norris was also fastest in Friday's second session and is looking determined after drawing a blank in Canada two weeks ago when he collided with Piastri.
