AI Startup Midjourney Launches Image-to-Video Creation Model V1- Here is All You Need to Know
The new offering is available today via Midjourney's website, and it's available to all customers, including those who want to use a free account. Faster video rendering is limited to those users who pay for a subscription, which begins at $10 a month.
The move positions the platform in competition with AI-powered video creation. V1's launch is a significant step forward for Midjourney, which has spent the majority of its time creating visually rich static images. With the new tool, the start-up is going after users who want to animate the visuals they create, offering features that strike a balance between simplicity, customization, and affordability.
Despite the fact that the tool is available to all the Midjourney users free of cost at the preliminary level, one aspect of concern is the GPU usage by the tool, as the process of video generation is more resource-intensive, requiring eight times more GPU time per second of video. Hence, the users have to allocate GPU time carefully, especially when using the fast mode available under standard subscriptions.
The company has also provided Relax Mode to heavy users or creative professionals, but it is accessible only to Pro-tier users and higher. This mode allows unlimited videos at no extra cost, but with longer waiting times, it can at times be up to 10 minutes for one animation. "The pricing model still gives you a massive cost advantage," the company says—reportedly being over 25 times cheaper than any of the current AI video generation tools on the market.
Though the new tool is not far from controversy, like many other artificial intelligence models. Midjourney was sued for copyright infringement by major media companies, including Disney and NBCUniversal. The lawsuit claims that the platform enables unauthorized derivative works by reproducing characters and images from popular franchises.
The studios said Midjourney has essentially become a "virtual vending machine" for pirated offerings, citing instances using characters from Star Wars, Toy Story, Marvel, and The Simpsons. The company has not publicly addressed the lawsuit or issued a public statement about the legal questions raised about V1.
Midjourney founder David Holz has called the video model a "stepping stone" to more sophisticated applications, such as real-time, three-dimensional environments that users can interact with.
As far as the actual animation process is concerned, Midjourney V1 is designed to be user-friendly as seen below:
Users begin by uploading an image—either created within Midjourney or imported from another source.
After the image is generated, an "Animate" button lets users transform the static image into a video.
The system produces four 5-second video clips from the chosen image.
These clips can be extended by four-second increments, up to a total of 21 seconds.
Currently, the videos are silent, with no audio features supported.
At present two animation modes are available: First, automatic mode , which applies system-suggested motion effects to the image. Second, manual mode lets users guide the animation through descriptive prompts.
which applies system-suggested motion effects to the image. Second, manual mode lets users guide the animation through descriptive prompts. Users can also choose between two camera movement styles: Low Motion keeps the camera largely stationary, and High Motion introduces dynamic movement of both the subject and the camera.
This new offering introduces an intuitive way to blend static visuals with motion, enhancing creative storytelling possibilities on the platform.
Netizens were quick to upload the videos generated by the tool, which shows the kind of interest this tool has generated as seen above.

Super Dad mode activated: Man jumps off Disney cruise ship to save daughter
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Rescuers from the Disney Dream cruise ship pluck a father and his five-year-old daughter out of the sea. It was a fitting Disney ending. A father jumped off a 14-deck cruise ship operated by Disney to save his five-year-old daughter who had fallen over a railing. He managed to swim towards her and, for a couple of minutes, treaded water till rescuers could reach him and his daughter. The incident happened on June 29 on the last leg of a four-day cruise from the Bahamas to Florida. Videos of rescuers on a small boat plucking the man and his daughter from the sea have since gone viral. Many of those who saw the videos praised the father for his act of paternal heroism and self-sacrifice, and the ship's crew for their quick response. 'Superhuman dad strength activated,' said one on the BBC's YouTube channel. Another said the rescuers 'deserve a medal of honour each'. It was not clear how the girl fell overboard, but witnesses said they saw the father taking pictures of her on the fourth deck when it happened. 'There was some kind of commotion,' a passenger who gave her name only as Chandler told People magazine. 'Then this awful scream from what I assume is the mother, and then this massive splash,' she said. 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool. It was so loud.' She said she then saw a life vest dropped into the water, and then heard over a loudspeaker: 'MOB (man overboard) port side'. Another passenger, Ms Laura Amador, told CBS News: 'The ship was moving quickly, so quickly. It's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them.' She added: 'The captain slowed the ship and turned it around, and then they deployed a tender (smaller) ship with people on it to go get them, and we saw them rescue the dad and daughter.' Mr Gar Frantz, who was also a passenger on the ship, told NBC News: 'We watched it. You could see two little things... It was crazy. It was horrific.' Mr Eric Pabon, also a passenger, told CBS News: 'It took everybody's breath away, to be honest with you. Very nerve-racking to say the least, but as a father, like I said, I would've done the same thing.' He added: 'It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I hope I never get to see again.' The 4,000-person capacity Disney Dream cruise ship, was returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after sailing for four days around the Bahamas. But how did she fall overboard? Disney confirmed in a statement that two passengers were rescued, but offered few details about what occurred. 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' a Disney Cruise Line spokesman said. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.' The lack of clarity and details had some wondering how much of the accident was, in fact, the father's fault. 'She cannot fall over the railing unless she was lifted up or she climbed up,' said one YouTube viewer. Another viewer was just as direct in blaming the father: 'The daughter only fell overboard because of the father's negligence.' Most, however, were on the father's side, calling him 'hero father', 'brave dad', and 'dad of the decade, right there'. People magazine reported on July 2 that the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Florida was looking into the incident. A statement from the sheriff's office said: 'While there doesn't appear to be anything suspicious, detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the child falling overboard.' Said a sheriff's representative: 'This family is so blessed... It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.' While it is rare for passengers to fall from cruise ships, rescues are not often successful when they do. According to a Cruise Lines International Association report from 2019, 25 people fell overboard that year from cruise ships and only nine were saved from the water.
