Garry Jennings celebrates victory at May Day Rally
Based entirely within the confines of a sun-drenched Saint Angelo Airport on the outskirts of Enniskillen, Jennings' cushion at the end of 24.4 competitive miles was 9.6 seconds.
The charge of eight-time Northern Ireland Rally Champion Derek McGarrity in another Volkswagen Polo GTi R5 was halted on stages four and six when he found his path blocked by back markers.
He conceded the unfortunate – and time consuming – incidents had 'just ruined the job for us' and he had to settle for third with Derrick Jobb.
In the two-wheel-drive battle, Cootehill duo Andrew McIntyre and Andrew Wedlock were clear winners in their Toyota Starlet from the Ford Escort Mk2 of John and David Bonner.
Meanwhile, Callum Devine has moved to within one victory of drawing level with the five-in-a-row the late Bertie Fisher recorded at the Rally of the Lakes between 1990 and 1994.
Devine made a slow-start to the third round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship on Saturday, but set-up tweaks allowed him to find the sweet spot with his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 and he shot to the top of the leaderboard on the first two stages of the Sunday leg.
He hammered home his advantage alongside Noel O'Sullivan on the afternoon loop and went on to finish it 14 seconds clear of Meirion Evans and Ger Conway's Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, and a further 4.3 seconds to the good over the Hyundai i20 N Rally2 being campaigned this season by triple British Rally champion, Matt Edwards.
'To go and do this four times in a row is not something I had really thought of beforehand but yeah, it is pretty special. I owe a big thanks to Noel – he was absolutely fantastic over the two days and, with him being a Killarney man, this is extra special,' reflected Devine.
'It was a tough weekend, we started off a bit slow but all the guys I work with helped to get me back on track and up to speed with the other boys, so yeah, I am really pleased

A stacked entry has been secured for the closed-road meeting which retains its popular format of two special stages run three times, with Armagh's Black the No.5 seed. Running just ahead of Black is the defending champion Rob Duggan in a Ford Escort Mk2, Darrian T90 GTR exponent James Stafford at two, David Moffett in a second rear-wheel-drive Toyota Starlet at three, and Johno Doogan in another Ford Escort Mk2 at four. Other standout names include former Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship title holder Gary Kiernan, Michael Cahill, and Denis Hickey. All three are taking part in Ford Escort Mk2s. When it last ran in 2023, Black had climbed to second position with two stages remaining only for a spin — and stall — on the penultimate timed run test to put the brakes on his charge. Black is aiming to put the record straight tomorrow in his 2.5-litre powered rocket and hopes Saturday's shakedown stage can help get him up to speed and dialled in to the terrain. 'It can help get us back into the groove and allow us to go hard from the opening stage,' said Black, who was in Finland this week helping Toyota Gazoo Racing's Kalle Rovanpera and Jonne Halttunen prepare for their home round of the FIA World Rally Championship. 'That will be important as it has been more than 10 months since we did a proper stage rally — but we know we are more than capable of achieving a good result. The hope is that everything will click for us from the word go and we can steadily build on that,' he added. 'We really enjoyed our run out in Imokilly two years ago — we were lying second overall until we spun and lost about a minute in time when the car stalled and refused to restart. 'Once again, organisers have attracted another really strong entry, with anyone in the top 10 capable of coming away with top spot. If we can have a good steady run in Imokilly with no mistakes then hopefully we will be there, or thereabouts, come Sunday evening.'

AIDAN O'BRIEN has snapped up a legendary late jockey's son - who's 'the double of his dad' - for a big ride. Every jockey dreams of riding for the iconic Ballydoyle boss. 3 3 3 And, on Tuesday, Paddy Smullen gets the chance to do just that in some very famous silks. Paddy, whose sole career victory came aboard Dermot Weld's Grappa Nonino at Dundalk in March, is the son of the late, great Pat Smullen. The nine-time Irish Champion Jockey died aged 43 in September 2020 having lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. Smullen Snr - who won the 2016 Derby on Harzand and 2003 2,000 Guineas on Refuse To Bend - was famed for his 'enduring partnership' with Weld. So it was fitting that his hugely promising jockey son's first winner would come on one of Weld's horses. He will be aiming to chalk one up for O'Brien on Tuesday, though, as he gets the leg up on Mont St Michel. The 10-11 favourite for a 1m6f race at Killarney runs in the iconic Kyprios black and white silks of Moyglare Stud. Smullen Snr wore the same when he rode Refuse To Bend to victory in the 2003 2,000 Guineas. Mont St Michel, a four-year-old colt, was close up behind the now-retired Kyprios on his last run and is co-owned by the Coolmore juggernaut of John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. Paddy, 17, spoke so well after his breakthrough win - and explained how much it meant to him to follow in his old's man footsteps. He said: "I wasn't thinking about winning but just getting as good a position as I can. "I came out in front and was delighted. It doesn't feel real at all. It all went way too fast, it's amazing. "There's lots of sentimental value as well. It's brilliant to follow in his footsteps. "Dermot and the whole family have been amazing to me. I'm happy to repay them for what they've done for me." One punter commented afterwards: "Got shivers when I saw DK Weld and P Smullen on the card… absolutely brilliant, best of luck in the future." I'll be back to defend my crown, vows new Northern Ireland Stages Rally king Aaron McLaughlin
The County Donegal man opted to miss a family wedding in the hope of securing the title with a round of the national series to spare — and he delivered with a top-three points-scoring finish. McLaughlin becomes only the second person from south of the border to add his name to the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs (ANICC) trophy; Monaghan's Stephen Wright was the first Irishman to achieve the feat back in 2019 after winning a tie-break from Derek McGarrity. McLaughlin was forced to do it the hard way, however, having to recover from a disastrous start at the Loughgall Stages that involved a costly off-road moment in his Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. Fastest times on the next five short, sharp tests through Loughgall Country Park quickly pushed him up the leaderboard, yet despite his speed he was unable to usurp the naturally aspirated Proton Satria Neo of Marty Toner, with the pair separated by less than two seconds at the finish. 'I have never had Championship and Aaron McLaughlin in the one sentence, so the feeling is pretty good — we have never won a title or anything like that before. We are absolutely over the moon,' said McLaughlin, who made a quick exit from Loughgall so he could attend the wedding after party. 'We had a bit of a disaster on the opening stage but we managed to claw our way back up the leaderboard and found ourselves in a huge battle with Marty right until the day's very last stage. 'We gave it everything to try and get back in front of him but we just couldn't make up any more than three seconds a stage each time. Losing 15 on the first one left us pretty far back and making that up here was always going to be a really big ask, but at least we can say we tried. 'It was small margins at the end but I could not have lost to a better man. Marty and the entire team are sound men, so I have no complaints about who the overall win went to,' he continued. 'It would have been nice to win the rally and the Championship on the same day but we have no complaints — we achieved what we set out to do and already the plan is to return next year and defend our title. It is a great competition and, logistically, one-day rallies just work for me.' Armagh's Jason Black was once again in mesmerising form at the controls of his 2.5-litre, rear-wheel-drive Toyota Starlet as he delighted his local supporters by coming home in third place.
