
EV battery outlook: Lithium-ion demand set to jump 48% by 2030, says ICEA report; Import reliance and EoL waste pose key challenges

The report estimates that total LiB demand will reach 115 GWh by 2030, with electric vehicle-linked usage expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 48%. In comparison, demand from stationary storage is projected to grow at 14% CAGR and from consumer electronics at 3%, ANI reported.
The surge in demand comes amid India's broader push towards its Net Zero targets and the government's supportive policies on clean energy adoption, domestic cell manufacturing, and battery end-of-life (EoL) management.
However, the report also highlights structural challenges related to import dependence and environmental risks.
Imports rise as local capacity lags
'India currently lacks Li-ion cell pack manufacturing capabilities and mining infrastructure, making it heavily reliant on imports of LiBs consisting of critical battery-active materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese,' the report noted.
ICEA and Accenture estimate that cumulative demand for these critical materials will exceed 250 kilo tonnes between 2024 and 2030, translating to an import exposure of over $5 billion.
To address these risks, the government has launched initiatives including the Critical Minerals Mission and exemptions on trade duties for key minerals. The report also references the Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR), introduced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in 2022, which mandate responsible disposal and recycling of used batteries.
Collection remains low despite rules
Despite the regulatory push, about 39% of end-of-life consumer electronics batteries are not being collected, the report observed.

India's goals under its COP26 'Panchamrit' pledge include achieving 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity and cutting emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. It also plans to reduce GDP emissions intensity by 45% and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
According to the report, India's ability to meet these targets hinges partly on its capacity to scale Li-ion battery production while managing the supply chain and environmental footprint.

ICEA Chairman welcomes rare earth magnet incentives, terms it 'timely' intervention
New Delhi: Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), welcomed the central government initiatives to ramp up rare earth magnets production in India, particularly the incentives the latter is earmarking for. ICEA is the apex industry body representing the entire electronics sector. "We are extremely excited, although this will make set up capacities in the longer run, but the intention is very good and I think it is very timely because the industry is facing a bit of a crisis and the supply of magnets is quite difficult to procure if we set up independent Capacity here," the ICEA Chairman told ANI. "It will be a true triumph. We are very excited about this announcement. The magnets is a core industry, and the processing of rare earths and metals is a very core industry. It's a very good development. I think this is a substantial sum of money. The scheme is well articulated. We'll go through the details and we will fully support the government in this great initiative," he added. The central government has earmarked ₹1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India, aimed at building domestic capacity when there are reports of global short supply. "Some progress is going on (on the rare earth magnet production front). We have already allocated ₹1,345 crore (for subsidy). We are on course to select the manufacturers," Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy told reporters at a press conference earlier today. Heavy Industries Secretary Kamran Rizvi, accompanying the minister, said the scheme has been circulated and it is currently under inter-ministerial consultation. "We are interested only in magnets. Anybody who gives us magnets will get incentives," the top official said. It is expected that there will be at least 2 manufacturers who will participate in this program. Early this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including India. India was in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of rare earth metals -- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of ₹16,300 crore and an expected investment of ₹18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings. Recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the central government is actively encouraging private companies to mine and explore critical minerals overseas and bring them back into the country to serve the needs of the domestic industry. This marks the first drop since the 2020 pandemic-hit first quarter of 2020. The decline in April-June 2025 was likely due to a cooler summer and an early monsoon, which reduced energy needs. The latest data from the India Meteorological Department showed that May saw a maximum temperature of 35.08 degrees Celsius, as against the normal trend of 36.60 degrees Celsius. The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) in June also fell to about 242 GW last month from about 244 GW in June 2024. The new reciprocal tariffs for the listed countries are set to take effect from 1 August. India, which is trying to strike a trade deal with the US, is unlikely to receive such a formal notification, Mint reported. Accenture signals IT slump A 6% drop in Accenture's new bookings in Q3FY25 led to a sharp decline in its stock last month. This was mirrored by Indian IT stocks, highlighting the company's influence on the sector. As a major player with overlapping markets, especially in North America, Accenture is seen as a bellwether for Indian IT firms. All listed Indian IT companies earn over 50% of their revenue from the Americas, making them sensitive to demand shifts there. However, an analysis by shows that the Dublin-headquartered tech and consulting major differs from Indian IT firms in several ways, warranting a closer look beyond its quarterly numbers.
