
UK officials issue 48-hour alert amid rise in foodborne illness that killed seven
Health experts have issued Brits a 48-hour warning amid a rise in cases of an illness that has killed seven people in England. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) told people to look out for any potential symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).
STEC is a strain of E.coli that can cause diarrhoea with blood, stomach cramps, and fever. However, in some cases it can also lead to deadly complications such as sepsis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS).
It can be spread through contaminated food or through contact with an infected person. Therefore, the UKHSA has urged people not to prepare food for others for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.
This comes following a 26 per cent rise in STEC cases in England in just one year. In a post made to X, the health body said: 'We've seen an increase in cases of STEC, a foodborne illness that can cause diarrhoea, bloody stools and stomach cramps.
' Children aged one to four years were most affected and we're reminding parents to make sure young children wash their hands with soap and warm water before eating. Our latest data shows that Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) cases have increased by 26 per cent in 2024, compared to 2023.'
The most recent figures show that a total of 2,544 culture-confirmed cases of STEC were reported in England during 2024. Young children were most affected, with the UKHSA linking this to a number of factors including weaker immunity, less developed hygiene practices, a greater likelihood of parents seeking healthcare when young children are symptomatic, and potential exposure to risk factors such as contact with farm animals, particularly at petting farms.
Last year, around two per cent of STEC cases went on to develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). This condition causes small blood vessels become damaged and inflamed and can lead to kidney failure.
As reported by the UKHSA, there were seven deaths caused by STEC in 2024. Dr Gauri Godbole, deputy director of gastrointestinal infections, food safety and one health at the UKHSA, commented to say: 'STEC cases rose by around a quarter in 2024. While this rise is partly due to one foodborne outbreak, we have been seeing STEC cases gradually increase since 2022 and therefore it's important for people to take steps to prevent infection.
'If you have any STEC symptoms, like mild to bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and dehydration, wash your hands with soap and warm water and use bleach-based products to clean surfaces. Don't prepare food for others if you have symptoms or for 48 hours after symptoms stop.
'It is important for parents to make sure that young children wash their hands with soap and hot water and dry them thoroughly before eating where possible, especially after playing outdoors and visiting pet farms. If you are travelling abroad, it's important to remember routine hygiene practices to reduce your chances of becoming unwell.
'Rarely STEC can progress to cause kidney failure and life-threatening illness, particularly in young children and elderly.'
She urged people to consult your GP or healthcare professional if they have blood in your stools or severe dehydration and continue to stay hydrated.
In 2024, the UKHSA investigated five STEC outbreaks involving 467 cases, with 348 in England. The sources for three of these outbreaks were contaminated beef, fresh fruit, and salad leaves.
The largest outbreak was linked to contaminated salad leaves which resulted in 293 cases, including 196 cases in England. Of the 293 cases, 126 cases needed hospital care, 11 developed complications of HUS, and two died.

In fact, the number of people visiting the pharmacy chain about UTIs has risen over the summer months. UTI consultations through the NHS Pharmacy First scheme - which allows patients to seek help over seven common conditions - saw a 10 per cent increase between May and June this year, Boots told Sun Health. Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also showed a 9 per cent increase in UTI related hospital admissions compared to the previous 12 months. Many of these patients were in hospital for less than a day - with Boots suggesting hospital trips could be avoided by accessing early advice and appropriate treatment. Dr Gauher said: 'UTIs are common bacterial infections affecting the urinary tract that can cause painful symptoms, interrupt travel plans, and sometimes lead to more serious health complications if left untreated." These can include a high temperature, pains in the lower tummy or back, as well as needing to pee urgently and a burning sensation when you do so. 'Dehydration, frequent swimming, and changes in hygiene routines during the holidays can increase the risk of UTIs," the GP went on. "It's important to stay aware and take preventive measures, especially during these warmer months.' The GP shared her seven top tips for preventing UTIs or stopping them in their tracks. The most common illnesses you can catch on holiday 1. Stay hydrated Are you forgetting to drink water while getting caught up in your summer plans? This can make UTIs more likely, Dr Gauher warned. 'Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is one of the best ways to help flush out bacteria from your urinary tract and relieve UTI symptoms," she said. "Try and aim for at least six to eight glasses of water a day.' 2. Pee regularly The same applies for going to the loo. 'Urinating regularly is key too," the GP went on. "Don't hold in urine and try to go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need to. "This helps clear bacteria from the urinary tract before it has the chance to multiply.' What is a UTI? Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are usually caused by bacteria - found in poo - entering the urinary tract. The bacteria enter through the tube that carries pee out of the body (urethra). Women are more likely than men to pick up UTIs as they have a shorter urethra than men. This means bacteria are more likely to reach the bladder or kidneys and cause an infection. According to the NHS, things that increase the risk of bacteria getting into the bladder include: Having sex Pregnancy Conditions that block the urinary tract – such as kidney stones conditions that make it difficult to fully empty the bladder – such as an enlarged prostate in men and constipation in children Urinary catheters (a tube in your bladder used to drain urine) Having a weakened immune system – for example, people with diabetes or people having chemotherapy Not drinking enough fluids Not keeping the genital area clean and dry Check if it's a UTI Symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) may include: Pain or a burning sensation when peeing (dysuria) Needing to pee more often than usual Needing to pee more often than usual during the night (nocturia) Needing to pee suddenly or more urgently than usual Pee that looks cloudy Blood in your pee Lower tummy pain or pain in your back, just under the ribs A high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery A very low temperature below 36C Your pee may also be dark or smell. If this is your only symptom, it might be because you've not been drinking enough water. What to do if you think you have a UTI If you think you have UTI symptoms, you should speak to your GP to discuss treatment options. Most people will need antibiotics. Some people may be prescribed a 'delayed antibiotic', meaning they'll be asked only to use it if their symptoms don't go away after a certain amount of time. If you keep getting UTIs, your GP might recommend you have a low dose of antibiotics over a long period of time or refer you to a specialist for more tests and treatments. For women who have gone through menopause, there is evidence that vaginal oestrogen creams can reduce UTI symptoms. Source: NHS 3. Wipe well Sometimes your wiping habits could put you in the danger zone of a UTI, according to Dr Gauher. 'Practising good hygiene is another important step," she stressed. "Always wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from spreading to the urethra, reducing the risk of infection.' 4. Change out of wet swimmies After you've had a dip in the sea or the pool, do you find yourself hanging out in your wet bikini? It's best to change out of it soon, Dr Gauher advised. The same goes for your damp workout clothes too. 'Prolonged moisture creates a breeding ground for bacteria," she explained. "After swimming or workouts, change into dry clothing promptly.' 5. Pee after sex Though it's blissful to cuddle after sex, it's worth breaking the spell for a moment to nip to the loo. 'Sex habits also play a role in preventing infections," the GP said. "Urinating shortly afterward can help remove bacteria and lower the risk of developing a UTI." You might also want to consider "sashing the vaginal area before and after sexual activity" to make sure no germs get into your urinary tract. 6. Avoid scented soaps There's nothing nicer that coming out of the shower smelling delicious - but it's a good idea to keep scented stuff away from your vagina. 'Skip douches, scented soaps, and harsh feminine sprays, which can upset the natural balance of healthy bacteria," Dr Gauher advised. 7. Know red flag symptoms Make sure you're up to date with red flag UTI symptoms so you can seek help promptly. 'UTIs are infections that can affect the bladder, kidneys and the tubes connected to them," Dr Gauher explained. "They can cause symptoms like pain or a burning sensation when urinating, needing to urinate more often, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine.' Women aged 16-64 can access advice and prescription treatment through the NHS Pharmacy First Service, which is available at Boots stores in England as well as other pharmacies. Urgent warning as three brands of wet-wipes are found to be riddled with life-threatening bacteria - contamination has triggered infection in 51 people
Health chiefs have urged Britons to check their first aid kits for three brands of skin cleansing wipes linked to an outbreak of life-threatening bacteria. It comes after an investigation by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found the non-sterile wipes to be contaminated with Burkholderia stabilis bacteria. Officials have confirmed 51 people have been affected by the outbreak in the UK between 2018 and 2025. The bacteria has not caused any deaths so far but the UKHSA said 'there have been some serious infections which have required hospital treatment.' This type of bacteria doesn't tend to affect the general population, but can infect those with compromised immune systems and cystic fibrosis. It is also more likely to infect people who use the wipes when preparing an intravenous (IV) line—which administers medications and fluids—at home. They believe the cases are likely linked to three particular skin wipe brands that are alcohol-free and not marketed as 'sterile'. These include ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free and Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes. Their tests also revealed another brand, Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, were contaminated, but not with the Burkholderia strain linked to the outbreak. These products, which may have been used for 'skin cleansing' and cleaning around wounds, have been pulled from shelves but may still be in first aid kits, they warned. In rare cases, if it causes a serious bloodstream infection, Burkholderia stabilis bacteria can be life threatening. If anyone has bought the named wipes, the UKHSA has urged them to bin them in their household waste as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, if you have used the wipes, they said you do not need to seek medical advice unless you have certain symptoms. These include a wound or break in skin with redness, swelling, increased pain, warmth around it, pus or other drainage. Similarly, you should do so if you have an infection involving an IV line with redness, swelling, or pain around the insertion site and or fevers and chills. Going forward, they have advised people to only use wipes labelled as 'sterile' on broken skin such as wounds, scratches, or where you can see blood. They have also warned people to check the wipes in their first aid kits which are marked as 'sterile', ensuring that the packaging is not damaged, and the products are in date. If any are damaged or are past their expiry date, they urged people to dispose of them in their household waste. And if you manage an IV line yourself at home, they advise only using wipes if and as instructed by your medical team. They added that other non-sterile, alcohol-free wipes, although not included in the alert, shouldn't be used to treat injuries, cut and broken skin as 'their safety cannot be guaranteed'. Dr James Elston, consultant in epidemiology and public health at UKHSA, said: 'While the overall risk to the public remains very low, a number of non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products have been linked to an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis. 'It is important these types of wipes are not used for the treatment of injuries, wounds, or broken skin, and that they are not used to clean intravenous lines.' Meanwhile, Dr Cave, chief safety officer of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency added: 'We consider wipes which are intended for a medical purpose to be medicines. 'These products do not have a medicines authorisation. 'Anyone who has used alcohol-free wipes and has concerns about potential infection is advised to speak with a healthcare professional.' This bacteria is different to the deadly Burkholderia pseudomallei that kills up to 50 per cent of people it infects and is now listed as an endemic along the US gulf coast. Experts have said the more deadly bacteria is lurking in soil and stagnant water across the 1,600 miles from Texas to Florida. Those suffering with Burkholderia pseudomallei can develop pneumonia and sepsis which can be fatal.

The government brought in strict new rules earlier this year to tackle an outbreak of a serious disease spreading across Europe. This means that anyone coming back from affected regions such as Spain, France, Italy and Greece must make sure they don't have any prohibited items in their luggage. A foot and mouth disease warning was issued to Welsh farmers earlier this year. The current restrictions mean that anyone found carrying items including sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk into the country will be stopped at the border. It remains forbidden for travellers from all EU countries entering Great Britain to bring items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk into the country. This applies regardless of whether the products are wrapped or packaged, or whether they were bought at duty-free shops. Officials said that those caught with these products will be required to either surrender them at the border or have them seized and destroyed, reports Bristol Live. In serious cases, those found with these items run the risk of incurring fines of up to £5,000. This is to safeguard the health of British livestock, the livelihoods of farmers, and the UK's food security. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) poses no threat to humans, but it is a highly infectious viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, pigs and other cloven-hoofed animals such as wild boar, deer, llamas and alpacas. Despite there being no current cases, the outbreak on the continent presents a significant risk to farm businesses and livestock in the UK. The disease can cause substantial economic losses due to production shortfalls in the affected animals, as well as loss of access to foreign markets for animals, meat and dairy. In response to confirmed outbreaks of FMD in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Austria earlier this year, the Government has already prohibited personal imports of cattle, sheep and other ruminants and pig meat as well as dairy products from these countries. The new restrictions apply only to travellers arriving in Great Britain, and will not be imposed on personal imports arriving from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man. Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner stated at the launch: "This government will do whatever it takes to protect British farmers from foot and mouth. "That is why we are further strengthening protections by introducing restrictions on personal meat and dairy imports to prevent the spread of the disease and protect Britain's food security UK Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for international and trade affairs Dr Jorge Martin-Almagro said: "Following the detection of foot and mouth disease in EU countries resulting in a rising risk of introduction into Great Britain, we have extended restrictions on the personal imports of food products that pose a risk in FMD transmission. "Robust contingency plans are already in place to manage the risk of this disease to protect farmers and Britain's food security. This biosecurity measure combined with all others we have implemented are critical to limit the risk of FMD incursion. "I would urge livestock keepers to continue exercising the upmost vigilance for signs of disease, ensure scrupulous biosecurity is maintained and to report any suspicion of disease immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency." However, certain exemptions to these regulations remain in effect. Small quantities of baby formula, medicinal foods and specific composite items such as chocolate, sweets, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta are still permitted. Article continues below
