Pankaj Tripathi Says ‘Too Costly Tickets' Keep Audiences Away From Theatres

News185 days ago
Pankaj Tripathi went on to say that the 'business game' is beyond his understanding, as he is unfamiliar with the commercial aspects of cinema.
Pankaj Tripathi is enjoying fans' positive response to his performance in the recently released romantic drama, Metro…In Dino. Directed by Anurag Basu, the film, despite good word of mouth failed to gather big numbers at the box office — a similar case with the majority of Bollywood films in recent times. But what could be the reason behind the low footfall of audiences at the theatres? Well, the actor believes it's the 'Expensive ticket pricing.'
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Pankaj said, 'Ticket pricing ek mudda hai aur uski bhi ek bhumika hai (in poor collections). If a family has to go to the theatre today, it's a very costly affair. Ticket prices and the food served there are so expensive."
The actor went on to say that the 'business game' is beyond his understanding, as he is unfamiliar with the commercial aspects of cinema. 'I do feel that movie tickets are too costly and that's surely a barrier." As the actor continued to express his ideas, he explained why the high ticket costs are to blame.
'On Tuesdays or National Cinema Day, when rates are reduced, cinema hall occupancy increases. So, if we offer affordable tickets, footfall will undoubtedly grow. It's challenging for a family to spend Rs 2,000 and give five hours (including travel time)," he continued.
Amid the debate over high ticket prices at the theatres, the Karnataka government has reinstated a Rs 200 ticket price limit for regional films in theatres, including multiplexes. The decision followed Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's announcement in his budget speech. It is projected to benefit both film fans and the regional film industry, fostering a more vibrant and inclusive cinematic experience in the state.
Coming back to Pankaj, his recent release, Metro…In Dino also featured an ensemble cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Konkon Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher.
Up next, he will be seen in the comedy drama film, Parivarik ManuRanjan, along with Aditi Rao Hydari. The official release date of the film is yet to be announced. He also has Mirzapur: The Film with Ali Fazal and Divyenddu Sharma in his kitty.

‘Munna Bhai MBBS made me rich because nobody bought that film': Vidhu Vinod Chopra recalls South distributor rejecting film with ‘Bambaiya' language

Vidhu Vinod Chopra is not only a seasoned filmmaker, but also one of the most accomplished producers of Hindi cinema. He credits the success to his instincts, having backed films like Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta (2005) and Rajkumar Hirani's Munna Bhai franchise, 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), and Sanju (2018). On the latest edition of Creator x Creator on SCREEN, Chopra recalled how no distributor in South India wanted to buy Munna Bhai MBBS (2003) from him. 'Munna Bhai MBBS opened to empty theatres. Munna Bhai MBBS is the movie that made me rich, but that's because nobody bought that film outside of Mumbai,' recalled Chopra. 'I had a distributor in South of India, who had brought Munna Bhai for Rs 11 lakh. Those days, they used to take delivery. So he came to take delivery four days before the film's release. When he saw the film, he said, 'Sir, this film won't work even for a day. Nobody outside of Mumbai would get the language of Munna Bhai,' added Chopra. Munna Bhai MBBS revolved around a Mumbai-based gangster's (Sanjay Dutt) resolve to become a doctor. In the film, the titular character and his henchmen, including right-hand man Circuit (Arshad Warsi), spoke in Bambaiya, a street language of Mumbai. Vidhu Vinod Chopra recalled offering to return the advance of Rs 5 lakh that the South distributor had already paid him, even though he insisted not to in exchange of keeping it as a security for Chopra's next film. 'The bottom line is I had no distributor for South India. I had friends — Shyam Shroff and Bala Shroff — who had a company. There was a cinema there, and I got just one morning show at 11 am in Chennai. I sold my print there for Rs 5 lakh. My final business from that one centre was in Rs 1 crore plus,' revealed Chopra. 'Nobody went to see the film the first day or the second day. But when you do good work, (it'll pay). Which is where I'm anti-marketing. Not anti-marketing, but I don't really care about marketing because people will discover. Even 12th Fail started with Rs 10-30 lakh. It ran for seven months in cinemas in today's time! Two months after it released, it was already on an OTT platform like Hotstar, yet people went into cinemas,' said the filmmaker. The film, backed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra's production house VVC Films, earned Rs 56.38 crore at the domestic box office. Jaskunwar Kohli's Zero Se Restart, based on the making of 12th Fail, released in cinemas last year, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
