Germany plans six-month voluntary military service, sources say
Volunteers would be sought for training in simple tasks such as guard duties under the scheme, but a military draft to recruit more people could be considered if uptake were deemed too low, the sources said.
With European states that are in NATO also under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to invest more in their own security since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius wants to increase the number of soldiers in service from 180,000 to 260,000.

Germany hopes the voluntary six-month scheme would help double the number of trained reservists from the current level of around 100,000 and that some of the volunteers would go on to have a career in active service, the sources said.
The defence ministry said preparations for the new military service scheme were in full swing.
Live Events
"The aim remains for the law on the new military service to come into force in January. Our actions are focused on this," a spokesperson for the ministry said, adding that details would be revealed once the legislation reaches parliament.
Participants in Germany's planned scheme will have the opportunity to extend their homeland security training to obtain a truck driver's licence or train as a tank driver, the sources said.
New improvised barracks are also planned so that recruits can train closer to home, they added.
The sources said Pistorius wants to have the legislation passed by the end of next month, with the first recruits to start training from May 2026.
Questions remain about the plan, including who would be drafted for compulsory service if the government did not meet its recruitment targets. This element of the plan is also controversial within the minister's own Social Democratic Party.
Germany ended its previous compulsory military service programme in 2011.
Efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine have faltered, with Trump reporting no progress in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
Russian officials have accused Western leaders of invoking a "fabricated 'Russian threat'" to justify increased defence spending.

China Retaliates Against EU on Medical-Device Procurement
China will impose some reciprocal curbs on medical-device procurement for companies based in the European Union, adding tensions between the two major trading partners just as Beijing seeks to shore up ties while it fights a trade war with the US. Starting from July 6, EU-based companies will be excluded from Chinese government procurement for certain medical devices if the value is higher than 45 million yuan , according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance on Sunday. Products made by EU-funded companies in China are not impacted by the curbs, the Ministry of Commerce said in a separate statement. China's move came after the EU announced plans to restrict Chinese medical device manufacturers from accessing public procurement contracts worth more than €5 million . The measures will restrict Chinese companies from accessing around 60% of the public spending in this field, or around €150 billion, according to an EU official familiar with the plans. The bloc will also allow no more than 50% of inputs from China for successful bids. Chinese exports of medical devices to the EU have more than doubled between 2015 and 2023, the European Commission said in a statement. In another sign of tension between Europe and Beijing, the Chinese government intended to shorten a two-day summit with EU leaders this month to just a day, Bloomberg reported on Friday. China also announced anti-dumping duties on European brandy on Friday while exempting major cognac makers that agreed to minimum price levels. The action followed the EU's decision in 2024 to levy duties as high as 45% on Chinese-made electric vehicles. European countries have complained that the Chinese government has failed to address overcapacity in sectors including steel, unfair subsidies and market access to its economy. Dalai Lama cannot decide on reincarnation, says China; India maintains neutrality
Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama (AP photo) NEW DELHI: China's ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, on Sunday said the 14th Dalai Lama has no authority to decide the continuation of the Tibetan Buddhist reincarnation system, calling it a religious practice that has existed for over 700 years and is not subject to individual discretion. "The reincarnation system of Living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism has existed for over 700 years,' China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, said in a post on X. 'Currently, there are more than 1,000 such reincarnation lineages across Tibet and Tibetan-inhabited regions of Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, and Qinghai," he wrote. Xu emphasised that the 14th Dalai Lama is part of a historical and religious succession and cannot unilaterally decide whether the institution should continue or end. 'The reincarnation of Dalai Lamas neither began with him nor will it end with him,' he said. 'He has no authority to abolish or continue the system,' he added. The remarks come amid renewed global attention on the issue, especially as the Dalai Lama turns 90 on July 6. The question of his succession has emerged as a sensitive geopolitical and spiritual issue, particularly in the context of China's increasing control over religious affairs in Tibet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Francisco Morato (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo However, the ministry of external affairs on Friday said that the government 'does not take any position' on such religious issues. 'We have seen reports relating to the statement made by His Holiness the Dalai Lama about the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, while adding: 'Government of India does not take any position or speak on matters concerning beliefs and practices of faith and religion.' Meanwhile, union minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju , a practising Buddhist, reiterated that the decision rests solely with the Dalai Lama and traditional Buddhist customs. Speaking at birthday eve celebrations for the Tibetan spiritual leader in Dharamshala, Rijiju said, 'Dalai Lama institution is purely religious and government of India believes there should be no interference in religious matters... I would like to wish His Holiness a long life... All his devotees desire to see him healthy so that the global community can benefit from his wisdom. .. I don't want to react on the Chinese statement, but we leave everything to His Holiness.' Earlier, Rijiju had said, 'The Dalai Lama is a defining spiritual leader for Buddhists. The decision about his reincarnation should follow tradition and be made by him alone. No one else has the right.' 'The Dalai Lama is a defining spiritual leader for Buddhists,' Rijiju said on July 2. 'The decision about his reincarnation should follow tradition and be made by him alone. No one else has the right.' The 14th Dalai Lama had recently reiterated that the institution would continue and that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust would have the authority to recognise his reincarnation. China has consistently asserted that the process of selecting Tibetan Buddhist leaders must follow procedures approved by the Chinese state. In a recent statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, 'Reincarnation must follow Chinese laws and religious rituals, including drawing lots from a golden urn and approval from the central government.' Mao added that while China respects religious freedom, it strictly regulates religious activities, including reincarnation processes. Meanwhile, in a sharp rebuttal, Penpa Tsering, President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, accused China of erasing Tibetan identity through 'cultural genocide.'

Trump's golf weekend sees F-16 ‘headbutt' civilian plane from restricted skies in Bedminster
Five incursions in one day — 1stAF (@1stAF) Live Events Warnings for civilian pilots Past breach near Trump's Florida residence Command repeats security call (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel A civilian pilot flew into restricted airspace above President Donald Trump's golf club in Bedminster on Saturday afternoon. The US military confirmed an F-16 fighter jet intercepted the aircraft and steered it away. Trump was at the club for the holiday North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) scrambled the fighter after the plane crossed into the temporary flight restriction (TFR) zone just before 2:40 p.m. local time. NORAD used radar, satellites and jets to track and was not an isolated case. NORAD said it was the fifth unauthorised entry into the restricted zone that day alone. To catch the civilian pilot's attention, the F-16 carried out a 'headbutt' — a standard move where the fighter flies close to signal the pilot to change New York Post first reported the incident, quoting military sources. The aircraft left the area safely once incidents like this have pushed NORAD to remind private pilots to pay attention to all official notices before flying near presidential airspace. In a firm message on X, 1st Air Force (America's AOC) posted: 'If you're flying anywhere near Bedminster, NJ, you'd better check NOTAMs 1353, 1358, 2246, and 2247. No excuses! Stay sharp, stay legal, and stay out of restricted airspace.'The airspace over Bedminster goes into lockdown each time Trump is present. NORAD's layered defences are on constant is not the first time a civilian aircraft has crossed the line near the former President. In March, a pilot flew over Trump's Florida residence just after he finished playing golf at the West Palm Beach course. That time, the F-16s fired flares to alert the pilot and force a course change.A day earlier, jets had intercepted another plane shortly after Trump landed at West Palm Beach from his private Mar-a-Lago club. None of these breaches have affected his schedule or flares used during interceptions are bright and can be seen from the ground but burn out fast. NORAD wants pilots to treat TFR zones seriously. General Gregory Guillot, Commander of NORAD and US Northern Command, made it clear: 'Adherence to TFR procedures is essential to ensure flight safety, national security, and the security of the President.'Since Trump's inauguration, NORAD has flagged a steady rise in these incidents. The FAA, Department of Defense and NORAD did not respond to Fox News Digital when asked about the latest now, fighter jets stand ready if another pilot drifts where they shouldn't.
