What good is a Winter Festival without an ice rink? That's what engineer Neil Wilson of Hanmer Springs thought, so, he set about building one himself. He had mere weeks to complete the rink, and if that wasn't hard enough, an expert told him it was impossible. But to quote Neil, "I look after 1.8 million litres of water that we keep hot. I figured freezing 15,000 litres shouldn't be that hard". Neil talks to Jesse about how he created the ice rink.

Almost 30,000 homes are without electricity in Northland. Photo: Screenshot / Northpower Almost 30,000 homes that were without electricity in Northland have had their connection restored. Power was interrupted at 11.19pm on Friday to 29,953 properties in Whangārei and Kaipara, lines company Northpower said. It was back on by 1am on Saturday. The company earlier told residents in affected areas they should prepare to be disconnected for at least an hour while investigations were underway. "We are aware of an outage affecting this area, we have field staff on their way to investigate. If you heard or saw anything before the power went out please call 0800 10 40 40." Northpower's website indicated the outage was caused by severe weather conditions. A Police spokesperson said officers were patrolling the streets and would respond to 111 calls. Fire and Emergency said "a few" fire alarms had been activated by the outage, but it had not received any major callouts.
