Spanning a whopping 6.2 million square metres, this site even played a role on the Olympic stage.

The former Athens International Airport site is set to undergo the ambitious Ellinikon urban development, with the first residential units estimated in 2027.
First used as a airport in 1938, the Greek airport saw its last flight in 2001 as operations moved to the new Spata site.
Since then parts of the development were repurposed for the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004.
Sports such as canoe‑slalom, hockey, and softball were hosted on the grounds.
Ambitious development
In 2012, Lamda Development purchased the site and now executives have shared an update on their ambitious plans.
Set to be one of Europe's largest regeneration projects, the Ellinikon urban development will see a new "smart city" constructed on the premises of the former airport.
And despite minor delays of three to four months in some areas due to updates in national building regulations, construction remains largely on track with the city set to welcome residents by 2027.
There are four residential projects underway, one along the coastal front and three within the 'Little Athens' district.
Accordinf to Lamda, these are all progressing ahead of schedule, with the average price for residential units in the Little Athens neighbourhood now exceeding €8,500 (£7,372) per square metre.
There is also strong commercial interest in the retail aspects of the project, with the Elliniko—Vouliagmenis Mall poised to become the largest mall in Greece.
Incredible 'airport of the future' revealed - with no queues or long waits
To date, Lamba has generated €1.2 billion (£1 billion) in revenue from real estate sales at Ellinikon.
The development is rapidly establishing itself as a landmark urban regeneration model, combining luxury living, retail, and green public spaces in a singular coastal destination.
It is set to include a 600 acre metropolitan park, a Hard Rock Cafe & Casino, museums, schools, university campuses, cinemas, office towers, and even beaches.
The development, which is roughly three times the size of Monaco, will be largely powered by renewable energy.
It will even feature a massive green canopy to reduce heat island effect.
History of Ellinikon International Airport

Ellinikon International Airport once served around 11 million passengers a year - and recorded 13.5 million passengers during its final year of operation.
Located four miles south of central Athens, the airport was initially built in 1938, just before the Second World War, at a time when the area was sparsely populated.
But shortly after it opened, the Third Reich invaded Greece and after 1941, the airport served as a Luftwaffe airbase during the occupation.
In 1945, the Greek authorities had to sign an agreement with the United States Air Force that allowed them to use the airport for flights between Italy and the Middle East.
From October 1, 1945, to 1969, the airport became the Hellinikon Air Base.
A command and control centre, as well as a passenger and cargo terminal, were opened at the airport.
In 1958, the airport changed its name to Athens International Airport when its purpose was changed to civil aviation.
In 1988, however, Greece refused to renew their agreement with the US Air Force, which conducted its last operation at the airport in 1991.
Following its official closure ten years later, abandoned planes, empty hangars, overgrown runways and crumbling infrastructure formed part of the huge eyesore that was once a major international airport.
And while most of the existing structure will be bulldozed, some of the historic hangers will be maintained and converted into cultural spaces.
Project timeline
The development is currently in its first phase, with construction of the park, Riviera Tower, and casino set to be complete by the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, the Little Athens residences, Hard Rock Hotel, and commercial areas will be developed between 2027 and 2030.
And from 2030 onwards, work will focus on the full expansion of cultural, business, and educational hubs.

It comes after several years of financial difficulty for the supercar company. After the pandemic it faced near bankruptcy in 2020, leading to significant restructuring. Sales continued to plummet in 2023, with the merger hoping to restore its financial position. A spokesperson said that they were proposing "a potential workforce reduction of up to 500 roles across the combined organisation". They added: "The realignment of roles and responsibilities is a necessary step in preparing for the coming together of our two businesses and will ensure that our operations are streamlined to enable resilience and success over the long term." The company said they would provide "comprehensive support and guidance to all those affected" while they try to minimise the impact on employees. "Looking ahead, we remain dedicated to expanding our portfolio of luxury vehicles and delivering the exceptional customer experiences that honour the McLaren legacy," the company said. A consultation process with its 2,500 employee workforce is already underway according to The Evening Standard. It reported that roles are expected to be cut in departments like design and engineering, IT, legal and HR. In addition to McLaren's Automotive business, he also promised to continue working on McLaren Racing's long-term success. This includes "supporting the team in building on their successes, winning more podiums, and inspiring fans worldwide." That means more buses, smoother transfers and quicker journeys to and from the terminal. Inside, passengers can now make use of waiting lounges, toilets and rest zones, with the whole setup designed to make travelling through the airport a lot less stressful. Drivers can now park in one of over 2,000 new spaces and stroll straight to the terminal via a covered footbridge – perfect for avoiding the classic British weather and stressful suitcase dashes. The car park and interchange are part of what Bristol Airport calls a 'one-stop shop' for public transport, all rolled out to improve the experience for millions of passengers. Airport bosses say this is just phase one of a massive plan to transform Bristol into a more modern, efficient travel hub. Over the next 18 months, they'll be tackling road layouts, terminal space, and food and drink options – all while keeping the airport running. And yes, more restaurants, bigger lounges, and improved drop-off areas are all in the pipeline. There will be a new "drop and go" zone and there will also be better pedestrian links to the terminal. Dave Lees, chief executive of the Airport, said the new development was "really important as it represents a milestone in terms of improving the facilities for our customers". Big Changes Coming to Airport Security: TSA Liquid Rule May Be Axed Soon "Gone are the days of passengers having to walk up slopes here," he added, explaining that the number of bays for coaches and buses had been doubled, as well as the addition of new covered access routes, covered seating and toilet facilities. This signifies the airport's "level of ambition" as it "looks to the future", he added. The project has taken over two years to complete and is part of a wider £400million airport transformation project, which aims to improve transport links. North Somerset Council leader Mile Bell called the new development a "fantastic piece of infrastructure", but added that more needed to be done to improve access routes. "I think we all recognise that we've still got more to do to make the access routes easier and introduce mass transit, particularly from Bristol city centre so people can get here easier, faster and cheaper using public transport," he said. He also urged passengers to "give public transport a try" to ease the strain on illegal and thoughtless parking in the areas around the airport. Not everyone was thrilled by the expansion plans and they sparked strong opposition from environmental campaigners, who argued against more flights during a climate crisis. The Bristol Airport Action Network (BAAN) worked with Extinction Rebellion and other concerned residents to protest the airport growth. They claimed that the increase in passengers every year would significantly increase carbon emissions. In 2020, North Somerset Council rejected the expansion plans after also expressing concerns about carbon emissions. Those against were also worried about the pressure the additional traffic would put on the local infrastructure and greenbelt intrusion. The rejection was overturned in 2022 but officials stressed that the expansion complied with national planning policy and deemed the climate impact acceptable. This comes after an unlikely football hero was spotted working at the airport in June this year. After Swansea boss Luke Williams was sacked in February 2025 he was placed on gardening leave. The ex-Swindon and Notts County chief decided to do something with his time and joined the team at Bristol Airport. Wearing a high-vis, the gig is helping disabled and limited-mobility passengers get around the terminals. Fans flocked to praise the footie star after a photo of him at the airport did the rounds. One wrote: "Cardiff City fan here with nothing but respect for this. Call me woke if you want. (*best believe I'll turn up in full bluebirds kit when I fly out next week)" Another wrote: "Clearly has a massive work ethic. Good luck to him!"
