LONDON -American 10th seed Ben Shelton reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time on Monday when a 3-6 6-1 7-6 (1) 7-5 victory over Italian Lorenzo Sonego also gave him the family bragging rights.
Thirty-one years ago Shelton's father and current coach Bryan lost 10-8 in the fifth set to Christian Bergstrom in the last 16 at Wimbledon in what proved the high-point of his Grand Slam career.
Shelton junior, who has previously reached the semis at the Australian and U.S. Opens, was a little ragged as he dropped his first set of the tournament, but the powerful left-hander found his length and attacked the net more in a dominant second set, and then raced through a third-set tie-break.
Shelton, 22, who beat Sonego at the Australian and French Opens this year, completed the hat-trick after a superb final game to break, roaring in triumph. REUTERS

Ben Stokes capitalised on some wayward India bowling to provide ample support to Root and will return for the evening session unbeaten on 36, keeping England on course for victory in the test that would seal a series win with one match to spare. Christian Norgaard relishing Arsenal challenge after ‘step up' from Brentford
Christian Norgaard had just penned a fresh two-year contract with Brentford in March but said he could not turn down the chance to go on an 'adventure' with Arsenal at 31. SINGAPORE – Early into Arsenal's open training session at the National Stadium on July 25, most of the Gunners fans had their eyes locked on Martin Zubimendi – the club's biggest summer signing so far – and latest acquisition Cristhian Mosquera. Just a few metres away from the Spanish pair – who were playing a game of keepy-uppies near the middle of the pitch – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was in animated conversation with another new signing. Arteta was seen gesturing energetically and colourfully to Christian Norgaard, seemingly offering the Danish midfielder advice on picking out the right pass. Norgaard, an €11.6 million (S$17.4 million) recruit from Brentford, looked deep in focus as he took in Arteta's instructions, and later shared with the media his eagerness to impress – and improve – even at 31 and having been captain at his previous club. 'I'm realistic of course and I know this is a step up in terms of quality and the size of the club. But I'm also here to contribute of course otherwise I wouldn't have made the move,' said Norgaard at a press conference at the National Stadium shortly after the training session . 'But I also know there are some of the best players in the world in my position (at Arsenal) . So it'll be competitive. I hope I can really help this team, both on and off the pitch.' This, despite fierce competition with compatriot and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, English star Declan Rice and €65 million man Zubimendi for a spot in a midfield three. 'It's about being available and fit,' said Norgaard. 'I'm used to playing 38 (league) games plus a couple of cup games, here it will be close to 60 games (with European club football) , maybe. So you need a full squad... I know my chances will come, and it's just about taking them.' The Liberty Global-controlled series said the 10-year extension, with sources indicating an option for a further five years, provided a solid platform for long-term growth and investment opportunities. Formula E expects its cars to be on the same level as, or exceeding the performance of, other top tier series including Formula One by the middle of the century. The current Gen3 Evo car can already accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96kph) in 1.82 seconds, 30% faster than a Formula One car with a top speed of 200mph (321kph). "We've believed in Formula E since day one, and this extension reaffirms our confidence in where it's headed," said Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries. "With the FIA's continued backing, we can now take the next big steps -- scaling the sport, growing its global fanbase, and continuing to push the boundaries of what electric racing can achieve."
