Wales head coach Richard Whiffin says his squad head to the World Rugby U20 Championship believing they can "compete with so-called top teams".
Whiffin has named a largely settled selection for the tournament starting later this month in Italy, with Neath scrum-half Ellis Lewis the only uncapped player in a squad of 30.

Dragons scrum-half Logan Franklin was unavailable after injuring his arm in Friday's 47-19 final warm-up win against Italy in Cardiff.
Wales begin their campaign in Pool B against Argentina on 29 June in Verona.
Whiffin's side then face France on 4 July in Rovigo and complete the pool stage against Spain on 9 July back in Verona.
"I think it is a very balanced squad with some quality experience returning from last year and some added emphasis from guys who have performed well during the Six Nations," said Whiffin.
Wales placed eighth at last year's Championship. They finished third in this year's Six Nations with three wins, including victory against England.

Whiffin used more than 40 players in two preparation games - they were also beaten 47-14 by world champions England in Pontypool - before finalising his squad which will be captained by Dragons flanker Harry Beddall.
"The England game was always going to be tough on the back of what was a really tough training week, and then to challenge ourselves against the world champs was brilliant," said Whiffin.
"I thought it cemented a few thoughts in our heads - 14-14 at 60 minutes I thought we had competed well and then we had a very polished performance against Italy.
"We're excited about the Championship but we still have a week's training ahead of us before we get on the plane for Italy, but we've done the hard work in terms of whittling down what was a really strong training squad to the 30 selected."

Having denied England a first Grand Slam in four years with a 23-13 victory at Cardiff Arm's Park in this year's Six Nations finale, Whiffin also believes his squad head to Italy with no fear.
"I think the pleasing thing is the boys are confident and they know they can go out there and compete with so-called top teams in the competition and we're not afraid," he said.
"We're going out there saying we want to get into that top semi-final bracket and once you get into that bracket you never know what's going to happen."
Wales squad:
Forwards: Ioan Emanuel, Louie Trevett, Harry Thomas, Saul Hurley, Evan Wood, Sam Scott, Owain James, Jac Pritchard, Luke Evans, Kenzie Jenkins, Nick Thomas, Tom Cottle, Dan Gemine, Deian Gwynne, Harry Beddall (capt), Caio James, Evan Minto.

Backs: Sion Davies, Ellis Lewis, Harri Wilde, Harri Ford, Steffan Emanuel, Elis Price, Elijah Evans, Osian Roberts, Osian Darwin-Lewis, Aidan Boshoff, Lewis Edwards, Jack Woods, Tom Bowen.

Boardman: 'He's going to become the next Michael Owen'

Scouser Spirit: Boardman and Reid Reflect on Liverpool's Triumph and Trent's Departure Champions of England and Champions of Character Liverpool's recent triumph has stirred more than just celebratory scenes—it's been a moment of deep pride for Reds around the world. On the Scouser Tommies podcast from Anfield Index, hosts Jim Boardman and Jay Reid captured the essence of what it means to be a Red in 2025. 'Liverpool are the champions of England. We won the league,' Jim opened, adding, 'I can't get that image out of my head…Virgil just… looking up at the trophy with absolute glee.' Advertisement Jay, who had a remarkable week—title win, parade, and wedding—said of the celebrations, 'The songs were red… win the league on Sunday, parade on Monday, married on Friday.' He joked about planning his anniversary around the Champions League final: 'Your first anniversary of your wedding… it's usually marked by paper… so a plane ticket to Budapest and a match ticket… how does that work?' Trent's Real Madrid Move: Betrayal or Bold Step? A major talking point was Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid. The tone was scathing. 'He's gone from being potentially one of the big names in the Liverpool museum… to a footnote in the history of Real Madrid,' said Jim. Jay echoed the disappointment: 'He's literally going to become the next Michael Owen in terms of status at Liverpool and Real Madrid.' Advertisement Jay compared Trent's exit with Owen's, noting, 'Michael Owen's career at Real Madrid will not be… a whole section of the Santiago Bernabéu Museum.' He added, 'He's got to go a hell of a long way if he's going to create a legacy that he was on his way to creating at Liverpool.' Trent's motivations were heavily criticised. Jim remarked, 'He had two pretty decent choices… but I can't help but think he's going to be wondering a lot more about what he's done.' Jay didn't pull punches: 'He's not even known as Alexander-Arnold anymore… he's had to change his name… he's probably a little bit embarrassed.' Photo: IMAGO New Era Under Slot and Transfer Confidence Turning to the future, the hosts showed strong optimism under manager Arne Slot. 'We've been putting our hands in our pockets,' said Jim. The acquisition of Jeremie Frimpong was met with enthusiasm: 'It sounds like a bargain,' and Jay observed, 'He's exciting and explosive… whether we'll see him at right back all the time I don't know.' Advertisement The imminent signing of Florian Wirtz was a highlight. Jay described the buzz in Germany: 'Vertz was the most popular name… not Musiala, not Müller… Vertz was the one.' Jim drew comparisons to Torres: 'We've not signed a player with such a persona and excitement around them since Fernando Torres.' Both hosts agreed that FSG's financial moves had been smart. 'We've had a few years where we've not spent money… now it's exciting when you're the champions and you go and do this,' said Jay. Scouse Solidarity and City Pride The podcast wasn't just about football. It celebrated Liverpool's character. Jim shared, 'There were people online offering… bedrooms, food, warm clothing… lifts to different parts of the Northwest,' in response to poor parade logistics. Jay added, 'That makes you proud to be a Scouser… proud to be from Liverpool… proud to be a Liverpool fan.' Advertisement The pair poked fun at the Real Madrid-bound full-back with a viral jab from Liverpool Airport: 'He even flew from Manchester,' quoting their infamous tweet. 'The whole shenanigans and story around Trent… he couldn't even fly out of Liverpool Airport,' Jay said, to which Jim laughed, 'That tells you all you need to know.' Looking Ahead Jay summed up the moment: 'We're the champions… and we're signing one of the best players in Europe.' Jim closed with, 'Let's just enjoy every single minute of it.'

Chelsea and Newcastle competing to sign Brighton's Joao Pedro

Chelsea and Newcastle United are in competition to sign Brighton & Hove Albion forward Joao Pedro. Brighton have not accepted any bid for the 23-year-old Brazil international, with Chelsea and Newcastle both in talks with the south-coast club over a move. Joao Pedro missed Brighton's final two matches of the season after a training ground altercation with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke, as first reported by The Athletic. Advertisement Head coach Fabian Hurzeler said ahead of Brighton's last game of the campaign against Tottenham Hotspur that the matter had been dealt with internally and was considered 'closed'. He made 30 appearances in all competitions for Brighton this season, scoring 10 Premier League goals and adding six assists. The forward joined Brighton from Watford in the summer of 2023 in a then club-record £30million deal. He has gone on to make 70 appearances for the south-coast club, scoring 30 goals. Chelsea have already signed striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town this summer, while Dario Essugo, Estevao, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez have also arrived following pre-existing deals. Any move for Joao Pedro would follow the departure of Jadon Sancho, who has departed Stamford Bridge after a season-long loan deal. Chelsea's priority in the market is a versatile attacker, a profile which Joao Pedro would fit, as well as a right-footed left winger. Chelsea are in talks with Borussia Dortmund over a move for Jamie Gittens. Newcastle United, who like Chelsea will compete in the coming season's Champions League, have yet to make a first-team signing this summer. Brighton have become prolific sellers in recent years with players including Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, Ben White and Alexis Mac Allister all sold for large fees and marking significant profit for the club. Joao Pedro has three caps for Brazil since making his international debut in November of last year. He played for 60 minutes in the 2-1 win at home to Colombia in March and was an unused substitute five days later in a 4-1 defeat away to world champions Argentina, which led to the sacking of head coach Dorival Junior. Man City's Club World Cup windfall could lead to further spending - but Liverpool shouldn't care

This summer's Club World Cup has, predictably, not been much of a hit in the UK. There is Premier League representation at the tournament in Chelsea and Manchester City, but truth be told, the tournament has failed to capture the imagination of supporters. The Premier League - won by Liverpool last season, by the way - and Champions League continue to be the two elite competitions for English clubs. Advertisement Perhaps fans are suffering from football fatigue, or perhaps it's because of the kickoff times, but whichever way you look at it — this has not been the tournament that Gianni Infantino was clearly hoping it would be. Even the manager of one of the best teams in the world, Pep Guardiola, admitted that the winner will likely be forgotten fairly quickly. I don't know," Guardiola said when asked how invested he is in winning the Club World Cup. 'Maybe after two or three days at the end of the tournament it'll be forgotten.' Advertisement The tournament's main appeal, clearly, is the lucrative prize money on offer, with a total of $1 billion on offer. City has already made a whopping $51 million, comprised mainly of a substantial appearance fee, as well as $2 million for each group-stage win, over Wydad, Al Ain, and Juventus. Those wins secured City's place in the last 16 of the competition, and qualification for the last 16 was enough to secure another $7.5 million in prize money. If Guardiola's men go on to win the competition, the club will bank another $32.5 million, taking the club's winnings to more than $80 million. Advertisement That is all well and good from a financial perspective, but the tournament is far from ideal preparation for the 2025-26 Premier League season. City is coming off the back of its worst season in almost a decade, and storming around dodgy astroturf fields in sweltering heat is unlikely to get the players in prime shape to reclaim their crown from Liverpool. Meanwhile, Liverpool's players are deep into their summer vacations as Mohamed Salah and Co enjoy some rest and relaxation ahead of their title defense. Mohamed Salah doesn't seem too fussed about missing out on the Club World Cup -Credit:X/@MoSalah Liverpool's pre-season gets under way on July 7 — six weeks on from the title parade — and that means that City's players could still be in Club World Cup action when the Reds play their first pre-season game. Advertisement The semi-finals of the Club World Cup take place on July 8 and July 9, with the final kicking off at 8pm BST on July 13 — five hours after Liverpool faces Preston in its pre-season opener at Deepdale. So, regardless of the lucrative sums that City is pulling in, there is no chance that Liverpool would choose to swap positions with its biggest rival right now.
