Szocs leads from the front as U Mumba clinches maiden title
The draw ended up being extremely challenging against it. Still, U Mumba overcame all the challenges to lay its hands on the coveted Ultimate Table Tennis trophy for the first time by polishing Jaipur Patriots off 8-4 in the summit clash on Sunday.
Riding on an all-round performance — with captain Bernadette Szocs leading from the front — U Mumba controlled the final ever since Lilian Bardet bounced back after conceding the opening game to Patriots' captain Kanak Jha. The convincing win meant U Mumba was richer by ₹60 lakh, with Patriots getting ₹40 lakh for the runners-up spot.
The semifinalists — Dempo Goa Challengers and Dabang Delhi TT — each received a cheque worth ₹17.50 lakh.
Despite Jha being an overwhelming favourite to put Patriots in charge, Bardet gained control and his audacious winners forced the former into errors.
Once he put U Mumba in lead, Szocs doubled the advantage by avenging her league stage loss to Sreeja Akula, the only unbeaten player in the tournament.
Besides her heavy forehand topspins, it was world No. 12 Szocs' ability to block Sreeja's powerful forehand winners that turned out to be the difference.
At 4-2, Szocs remained in the arena with Akash Pal — India's best doubles player — joining her.
The duo eased past Jeet Chandra and Britt Eerland with a clean slate.
The highlight was Pal's side-spins from the back of the court and exceptional down-the-line winners he produced. It put U Mumba on the cusp of a triumph, leading 7-2. All that was required of P.B. Abhinandh or Yashaswini Ghorpade was to snatch a game off their senior opponents.
Calculated risks
While Jeet's calculated risks paved off in the first two games, Abhinandh — who wasted a 6-2 lead in the second — was exceptional with his serves in the third to close out the game and with it the tie.
It meant Yashaswini, the star of Saturday's great escape against Goa Challengers, entered the arena only to join in the celebrations.
The result: U Mumba TT bt Jaipur Patriots 8-4 (Lilian Bardet bt Kanak Jha 4-11, 11-5, 11-7; Bernadette Szocs bt Sreeja Akula 11-9, 10-11, 11-5; Szocs & Akash Pal bt Britt Eerland & Jeet Chandra 11-6, 11-5, 11-5; P.B. Abhinandh lost to Jeet Chandra 5-11, 8-11, 11-8).

Patrick Mahomes dynasty in doubt? Analyst compares Chiefs to Tom Brady's drought
Patrick Mahomes dynasty in doubt? Analyst compares Chiefs to Tom Brady's drought (Image Via IMGN) After a heartbreaking Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, analysts are now asking the question everyone thought was impossible. Is Patrick Mahomes' golden era nearing its end? The debate was fueled by bold comparisons to Tom Brady's Patriots' decade-long championship drought. And this fiery debate is heating up stadium conversations. For what feels like an eternity, predicting the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl has been the safest bet in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady in the race of draught Earlier this week on FS1's The Facility, commentator Emmanuel Acho dropped a bombshell. He directly compared the Chiefs' Super Bowl absence to the Patriots' famous drought, post-Brady. He said, 'Has the Super Bowl drought for the Kansas City Chiefs started? Here's why I suggest that. We all forget, in the midst of praising Tom Brady, which we absolutely should, the Patriots didn't win a Super Bowl for 10 years. From 2004 to 2014, they did not win a won three, 10-year break, three. Patrick Mahomes has already won his three. Are we in the midst of his 10-year hiatus?' Acho pointed out that the Eagles and Ravens currently boast stronger rosters, with even the Bills closing the gap and the Chargers on the rise under Jim Harbaugh. As he said, 'Why I'm suggesting that is the Eagles, from a roster perspective, are way, way, way, way, way better than the Kansas City Chiefs.' If that wasn't spicy enough, he went on to say, 'The Baltimore Ravens, from a roster perspective, are way, way, way better than the Kansas City Chiefs. The Buffalo Bills, from a roster perspective, are not way better than the Kansas City Chiefs, but they are starting to close the gap. The Chargers are up and coming. ' Looking at the history of the Chiefs To unpack Acho's bold take, we need to rewind to the Patriots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo After winning three Super Bowls between 2001 and 2004, they didn't hoist the Lombardi again until the 2014 season. It was a decade-long drought. Crucially, patriots still reached big games amid that stretch, frequently contending but falling short of the ultimate prize. While the chatter is growing louder, the Chiefs remain firmly within the elite conversation. They won 15 games in the 2024 regular season, captured the AFC Championship, and advanced to Super Bowl LIX. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes? Still classified in a tier of one by analysts. Plus, Chiefs founder-dynasty leader Andy Reid is signed through 2029, and Mahomes keeps proving why he's among the all-time greats. Kansas City fans are divided. On one side, loyal Mahomes enthusiasts argue the dynasty remains intact as long as he's leading. They highlight that Mahomes already leads Tom Brady in wins over their first eight seasons and was dominant even amid a Super Bowl loss. On the other hand, cautious voices point to growing competition, concerns about roster turnover, and the aging arc of perpetual dominance. This split mirrors the long debates that come with any legendary player or era nearing a crossroads. Some argue this may be more of a reset than a collapse.
