PM: No levy for private schools
KUALA LUMPUR: Beginning January next year, all private schools, colleges and training centres will be exempted from paying their education levies, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the exemption will apply across the board and include preschools, primary, secondary and vocational schools, higher education providers and training centres.
'This is the first time in history that the government is exempting the education levy for a full year.
'We have received numerous appeals from education and training institutions asking for relief from this payment,' he said in his keynote speech at the National Training Week 2025 summit here yesterday.
Also present at the event was Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
The initiative, which will run from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2026, will benefit 1,668 institutions and see the government forgo RM46mil in levies.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the move is aimed at allowing these institutions to fully focus on improving the quality of their training and education.
'Our children must be given the best training possible. The government will find the necessary mechanisms and funding to support this effort,' he said.
He also instructed the secretaries-general of both the Education Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry to closely monitor these institutions to ensure they are delivering top-tier training.
'On top of that, I urge them to also monitor high-profit private companies. They must be prepared to give back, even a little, to their workers,' Anwar said.
The exemption applies only to private institutions following the government's move to expand the 6% service tax to private education services beginning July 2025.

LHDN flags 5,800 taxpayers for failure to submit income tax forms
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,800 taxpayers have been identified for failing to submit their Income Tax Return Forms through the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia's (LHDN) e-Invoicing monitoring system. Following compliance actions aimed at taxpayers at risk of failing to report their income, LHDN reported that these individuals subsequently submitted their BNCP, declaring a total income of RM484mil, which contributed an additional RM82mil in tax revenue. In a statement on Wednesday (July 30), LHDN stated that since the implementation of e-Invoicing, it has been receiving data from individuals and companies conducting business transactions since Aug 1 the previous year. LHDN has been actively monitoring taxpayer data verified in the MyInvois system. This ongoing monitoring aims to ensure voluntary and consistent tax compliance, in line with the principle of fairness in the country's taxation system. "As of today, LHDN has processed approximately 413 million e-Invoices, with over 83,000 taxpayers participating. This includes taxpayers from phases one to three, who are required to implement e-Invoicing, as well as voluntary participants from phases four and five," the statement read. LHDN expressed satisfaction with the positive response from taxpayers but emphasised that those whose grace periods have ended must fully comply with e-Invoicing guidelines. Taxpayers are urged to maintain up-to-date records and ensure full compliance to avoid enforcement actions. For assistance, LHDN offers dedicated advisory services, including a 24-hour help desk at 03-8682 8000, MyInvois Live Chat, and email support at myinvois@ Taxpayers can also visit LHDN offices or submit feedback via the MyInvois customer form at – Bernama

Structural reforms key to shielding Malaysia from future shocks, says Bank Negara governor
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Malaysia's ongoing structural reforms to ensure long-term resilience are critical to defend the economy against global shocks, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said during an exclusive interview with Bernama. He said Malaysia's foresight enabled the country to weather these shocks, such as the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic five years ago and impending challenges brought on by the United States' imposition of tariffs. He said Malaysia's endeavour to push for social equity and fiscal sustainability has also reinforced the economy and elevated it to a position of strength. This includes preparing a future-ready workforce and enhancing social protection systems. Malaysia's foresight in undertaking financial and economic reforms over the decades has helped strengthen the nation's economic fundamentals, enabling the country to weather uncertainties. 'Where we are today, the position of strength that we have, our ability to weather the pandemic and tariff developments, comes from our previous structural reforms. That is why we need to really continue on this path,' he said. Abdul Rasheed emphasised that the government's commitment to reform, particularly through rebuilding fiscal space, is important for the government to support the economy effectively during challenging periods. He also commended the government's implementation of key national strategies, including the National Investment Aspirations (NIA), New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP), National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), as initiatives which attracted quality investments and generated high-paying job opportunities. Key to this, he said, are policies to attract high-quality investments that increase economic complexity, create high-value jobs, extend domestic linkages, develop economic clusters and improve inclusivity, in line with the NIA. As evidence, Malaysia has recorded a historic high of approved investments amounting to RM378.5 billion in 2024, he said. 'We want high-quality investments that create high-quality jobs, high-income jobs and have strong domestic linkages. 'That also creates complexity in the economy. This is what Malaysia needs, and the plans have all these elements,' he said. He added that it is also important for Malaysia to embark on the next phase of reforms. Beyond creating new, higher-paying jobs, the central bank governor said Malaysia needs to create a more agile and future-ready workforce through labour market reforms, while enhancing the nation's social protection systems. 'The country is working hard to attract quality investments, which will in turn create high-quality and high-income jobs. Our workforce must be ready for this, and so will need to be re-skilled and up-skilled. 'The education system must evolve in tandem to better prepare Malaysians for an increasingly digital and knowledge-driven economy,' he said. On social security, Abdul Rasheed stressed the need to improve the design and targeting of assistance programmes to ensure inclusivity, maximise impact, and ensure that objectives are being met. He highlighted that funding for these education, healthcare, social protection and other initiatives can be further strengthened by channelling savings from fiscal consolidation efforts, including rationalising subsidies. He also said that the government remains committed to reforms, and at the same time, acknowledges the challenges faced by certain segments of the rakyat. These include facing ongoing cost-of-living pressure. He said that targeted rollout of measures, alongside supportive measures, can help ease the transition. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a cost-of-living relief package, which includes a one-off RM100 SARA cash aid, a reduction in the RON95 fuel price, toll hike postponements and an expanded Rahmah Madani Sales allocation. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will provide two additional Electric Train Service (ETS) trips on the KL Sentral–Padang Besar route and vice versa, in conjunction with the second-term school holidays and upcoming public holidays, including National Day, Maulidur Rasul and Malaysia Day. In a statement today, KTMB said the extra services will operate for 18 days across three periods: Aug 28–Sept 1, Sept 5–7 and Sept 12–21. Tickets will go on sale starting at 10 am tomorrow. 'These additional trains will offer 630 seats daily, including business class, for a total of 11,340 seats throughout the 18-day period,' KTMB said. The southbound train will leave Padang Besar at 11.05 am and reach KL Sentral by 4.30 pm, while the northbound ETS will depart KL Sentral at 5 pm and arrive in Padang Besar at 10.20 pm. KTMB said the initiative aims to meet increased travel demand during the holiday season and to encourage travellers returning to their hometowns to opt for public transport instead of private vehicles to avoid traffic congestion. 'This move aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement on July 24 of an additional public holiday on Sept 15. It also reflects KTMB's commitment to providing top-quality service for a more comfortable and seamless travel experience,' the statement read. KTMB urged travellers to plan ahead and purchase tickets early to enjoy more affordable, flexible fares and avoid last-minute rushes. Passengers are advised to arrive at stations at least 30 minutes before departure, as ticket gates will close five minutes prior to train departure, it said. Travellers can purchase tickets online via the newly enhanced KITS Style app, which offers a range of services in one platform and is available on the Play Store, App Store and AppGallery.
