Bulgaria to become 21st euro area member from January 2026
The EU Council has approved Bulgaria's euro area entry from January 1, 2026, with the lev fixed at 1.95583 per euro. Backed by the European Parliament and confirmed by the 2025 Convergence Report, Bulgaria meets all criteria. The ECB has supervised Bulgarian banks since 2020. Bulgaria will be the 21st euro area member, after Croatia in 2023.
The decision follows a strong endorsement from the European Parliament, where Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted in favour of Bulgaria's adoption of the euro, with 531 votes in support, 69 against, and 79 abstentions. The vote confirms that Bulgaria meets all required convergence criteria, the European Parliament said.
'Today's vote sends a clear signal: Bulgaria is ready to join the Euro area. All criteria have been met, and this step marks a key milestone towards Bulgaria's full European integration - for the country and its citizens,' Rapporteur Eva Maydell (EPP, BG) said after the vote.
The European Commission had already confirmed Bulgaria's readiness in its 2025 Convergence Report, published in June following a formal request from Sofia in February.
Bulgaria's euro adoption follows years of preparation, including the start of close cooperation between the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bulgarian National Bank in October 2020. Since then, the ECB has been supervising Bulgaria's banking system, directly overseeing four significant institutions and monitoring 13 others.
With this transition, Bulgaria will become the 21st member of the euro area. Croatia was the most recent country to adopt the euro, joining in 2023.

ICC Ignores India To Award England WTC Finals Till 2031, Adds 2 New Members
Last Updated: The ICC AGM in Singapore awarded the ECB hosting rights for the next three WTC finals. Timor-Leste and Zambia joined as associate members. Decisions on USA cricket were deferred. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced several key decisions after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) concluded in Singapore on Sunday. Among them was awarding the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) the hosting rights for the next three editions of the World Test Championship (WTC) finals (2027, 2029, and 2031), with the international body citing 'a successful track record in hosting recent finals'. The ECB has had a monopoly over the clash, which has been opposed by some and recently challenged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). But the ICC hasn't heeded their demands. It was previously said England gets to host the finals because of its weather conditions in July. New members join the ICC The ICC also announced the inclusion of the Timor-Leste Cricket Federation and the Zambia Cricket Union as associate members of the body, taking its total strength to 110. Update on the Afghan women's team The ICC also issued an update on the exiled Afghan women's cricket team, which is being supported by the three richest boards after the Taliban banned the sport for them back home. 'This initiative is being advanced through a collaborative effort led by the ICC, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Cricket Australia (CA), under the supervision of ICC Deputy Chair Mr Imran Khwaja. The programme aims to deliver structured support through high-performance initiatives, domestic playing opportunities, and engagement at key ICC global events, including the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 in India and the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in England," the ICC said. More time for USA cricket The ICC also deferred a decision on the future of USA cricket, which is suffering from administrative issues and had been asked earlier to clean the house. top videos View All 'ICC reiterated its previous position and confirmed that the organisation remains on notice. USA Cricket is required to undertake comprehensive governance reforms, including but not limited to completing free and fair elections within a three-month period. The Board, however, reserves the right to take such actions as it deems appropriate." The situation is extra sensitive because the USA will help host and participate in the 2028 Olympics. Indias forex reserves dip $3.06 bn to $696.67 bn, second straight weekly decline
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 20 (ANI): India's foreign exchange reserves fell by USD 3.06 billion to USD 696.67 billion for the week ending July 11, marking the second straight week of decline, according to the official data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the previous reporting week of July 4, the country's forex reserves witnessed a slip of USD 3.049 billion to USD 699.736 billion. In the week ending July 11, foreign currency assets, which are the major constituent of the forex reserves, fell USD 2.477 billion to USD 588.81 billion, possibly becoming the major reason for the fall in the forex reserves. The Gold reserves, another major component of the forex, again witnessed a sharp fall of USD 498 million to USD 84.348 billion. The country's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) with the global financial body, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saw a dip of USD 66 million to USD 18.802 billion during the reporting week of July 11, according to the RBI data. The Reserve Position in the IMF also decreased by USD 24 million, according to the data. Central banks worldwide are increasingly accumulating safe-haven gold in their foreign exchange reserves kitty, and India is no exception. The share of gold maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its foreign exchange reserves has almost doubled since 2021, till recently. In 2023, India added around USD 58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of USD 71 billion in 2022. In 2024, the reserves rose by a little over USD 20 billion, touching an all-time high of USD 704.885 billion at the end of September 2024. India's foreign exchange reserves (Forex) are sufficient to meet 11 months of the country's imports and about 96 per cent of external debt, said Governor Sanjay Malhotra while announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decisions. The RBI governor expressed confidence, stating that India's external sector is resilient and key external sector vulnerability indicators are improving. Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation's central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US Dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling. The RBI often intervenes by managing liquidity, including selling dollars, to prevent steep Rupee depreciation. The RBI strategically buys dollars when the Rupee is strong and sells when it weakens.
