Spotify sees 12% rise in paid subscribers

STOCKHOLM: Spotify saw paying subscribers rise 12% to 276 million customers in the second quarter of 2025, the world's top music streaming service said on Tuesday, though profits fell below expectations.
"People come to Spotify and they stay on Spotify. By constantly evolving, we create more and more value for the almost 700 million people using our platform," said Daniel Ek, the Swedish company's founder and CEO.
The Swedish company saw a greater-than-predicted 11% year-on-year increase in its totally monthly active users to 696 million.
Yet operating profit reached €406mil (US$468mil/RM2bil) – up 52.6%, but well short of its 539 million euro forecast.
Spotify blamed the shortfall on increased spending on salaries, changes in its revenue mix and higher-than-expected social charges.
"Social Charges were EUR98mil above forecast due to share price appreciation during the quarter," the streamer explained in its financial results presentation.
Total revenue rose by 10.1% to €4.19bil (RM20.6bil).
The below-expectation profit announcement comes as the streamer has found itself at the centre of the debate over music generated by artificial intelligence.
The technology's rise has led artists to complain about the prospect of being drowned out by a flood of AI-composed songs.
Of the major streaming platforms, only Deezer alerts listeners if a track is entirely conceived thanks to AI, despite the swift explosion in the number of AI-generated songs.
When questioned by AFP in late May, Ek insisted that AI did not present a threat to the music industry, and would instead help develop creativity. – AFP

Philippines' Marcos strikes defence deals in India

NEW DELHI: The Philippines and India signed a raft of security deals Tuesday (Aug 5) aimed at strengthening strategic ties between the nations as they navigate tensions with China across the Asia-Pacific. President Ferdinand Marcos, on a five-day visit to India, was accorded a red carpet welcome and honour guard before he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The leaders agreed deals including bolstering ties between their respective armed forces -- the army, and air force as well as their navies -- with Indian warships currently taking part in patrols of the disputed South China Sea with their Philippine counterparts for the first time. The Philippines has heightened defence cooperation with a range of allies over the past year after a series of clashes with China in the contested waterway. "India and the Philippines are friends by choice and partners by destiny," Modi told Marcos in a speech. "From the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, we are untied by shared values." Marcos' visit follows the Philippines' acquisition of India's BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system -- the first such export by New Delhi -- with deliveries beginning in April under a $375 million deal signed in 2022. Marcos said the two sides engaged in "far-reaching, productive and forward looking" discussions. "We expressed satisfaction over the rapid pace of the Philippines' ongoing defence modernisation and the expanding capabilities... of India's indigenous defence industry as a partner in this undertaking, exemplified by our BrahMos project," he said. India is a member of the Quad group, which includes fellow democracies the United States, Japan and Australia. Beijing has repeatedly alleged that the four-way partnership, first conceived by late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, was created as a way of containing China. Talks also included setting out the terms of reference for the negotiations on a "preferential trade agreement" between Manila and New Delhi. - AFP

Thailand approves US$600mil deal for Swedish fighter jets

The US$600 million agreement for the Saab JAS 39 Gripens was first announced in June. - Photo: Reuters BANGKOK: Thailand approved the purchase of four Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets on Tuesday (Aug 5), the air force said, a week after reaching a ceasefire in deadly border clashes with Cambodia. The US$600 million agreement for the Saab JAS 39 Gripens was first announced in June as part of a long-term plan to modernise the air force's combat capabilities. During five days of clashes with Cambodia that left more than 40 people dead, Thailand used its fleet of F-16s to strike military targets across the border. It was the deadliest border fighting between the two countries in decades. 'The Cabinet has approved the purchase of JAS 39 Saab Gripen to strengthen the Royal Thai Air Force and protect Thailand's sovereignty,' the air force said on its official Facebook page. A procurement committee began deliberations in August 2024, concluding a 10-month review that favoured the Scandinavian-made jets over American F-16s. The kingdom already operates 11 older Gripens, as well as dozens of F-16s acquired in the 1980s. The country's total defence budget stands at 200 billion baht (S$8 billion), which includes allocations for the army, navy and air force. - AFP

Nine listed Malaysian firms in Forbes Asia's best under US$1bil list

KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Malaysian public listed companies have earned a spot on Forbes Asia's 2025 Best Under A Billion list, which highlights 200 top-performing small and mid-sized firms across Asia Pacific with annual revenue under US$1 billion (RM4.23 billion). They are Able Global Bhd, Crescendo Corp Bhd, Frontken Corp Bhd, Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd, Hup Seng Industries Bhd, ITMAX System Bhd, Kerjaya Prospek Group Bhd, Pekat Group Bhd and Scientex Bhd. Forbes Asia announced the list today, recognising 200 resilient and high-performing small and mid-sized public companies in the region. In a statement, Forbes Asia said trade tensions continue to affect the Asia Pacific economy, with growth expected to slow further according to the International Monetary Fund. Despite this, it said the companies on the list demonstrated strong performance over the past year, with many thriving despite the economic challenges. The financial services sector stood out, with 18 companies making the list compared to eight last year. The beauty industry also remained strong, with 13 companies mostly from South Korea earning a place. Other businesses benefited from growing demand in sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and data centres. A total of 69 companies from last year's list returned in 2025, reflecting consistent performance. The Best Under A Billion list features publicly listed companies in the Asia Pacific with annual revenue between US$10 million and US$1 billion. From a pool of more than 19,000 companies, the final 200 were selected based on a composite score measuring debt levels, revenue and earnings per share growth over the latest one and three-year periods, and return on equity over one and five-year periods. Among the returnees is India's Triveni Turbine, which makes turbines of up to 100 megawatts used across industries such as cement, steel, chemicals and by independent power producers. South Korea-based PharmaResearch, which also appears on the list for the second consecutive year, is best known for its flagship skincare treatment product Rejuran, derived from salmon DNA. Another company returning to the list is DCI Indonesia, the country's largest data centre operator with 119 megawatts (MW) of capacity, which plans to add another 9MW when its new Surabaya facility opens later this year. Buoyed by Asia's growing wealth, Singapore-based wealth management platform iFast made its debut on this year's list, recording a record S$27 billion in assets under administration by the end of June. Taipei-based HD Renewable Energy, a solar and battery storage company, made the list with record 2024 revenue of NT$10 billion (US$310 million), up 73 per cent on rising demand for green energy. Since its launch in 2002, Forbes Asia's "Best Under A Billion" list has highlighted some of the region's biggest success stories, including Baidu, Alibaba, Infosys, Jollibee and AirAsia.
