‘We've learned not to overpromise': PKR sec-gen, Bersatu lawmaker reject call for binding election pledges
The proposal was put forth by a member the audience at the BBC World Questions debate on Tuesday to PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and former Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fahysal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
In response, Wan Ahmad Fahysal said the move was unnecessary as the people can always oust any government that fails to deliver on its promises.
'All political parties in Malaysia have experienced governing the country. We have learned our lessons not to overpromise on things that we cannot deliver,' Wan said.
Meanwhile, Fuziah said the PKR-led PH coalition have realised that serving in the opposition bench and steering the government are 'very different' experiences.
'So, we will be more careful about manifestos this time,' she said.
Like most democracies around the world, election manifestos are not legally-binding in Malaysia.
The two-hour BBC World Questions debate touched on various subjects, ranging from cost of living to national identity and fundamental liberties.
It will be broadcasted on BBC Service English on June 14 (Saturday).

MIRI (July 25): Selected retail traders included in the Rahmah Basic Contribution (Sara) aid programme should have more than one Electronic Data Capture (EDC) terminal, and a barcode scanner as a backup in case of equipment failure. An EDC terminal is a device used to process electronic payments for Sara recipients. According to Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling, in the context of Sabah and Sarawak, having a backup EDC terminal is especially important for retail shops in rural areas. However, he also describes the requirement to qualify for a backup EDC terminal as 'unreasonable and illogical'. 'I have been told that only those with over 120 transactions per day are eligible to apply for a second terminal. 'I think this requirement is nonsensical; this is ridiculous. 'We want to make things easier for the people, not make them queue up for long periods at the counter,' said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary in a statement. Adding on, he said that he had contacted Yayasan myKASIH regarding this issue. 'Yayasan myKASIH has been entrusted by the federal government to manage the Sara aid via MyKad, enabling the purchase of basic necessities at selected retail stores,' he added. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off SaraRM100 aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This marked the first time that cash assistance was being disbursed universally to all adult citizens via their MyKad. Back to the EDC terminal, Ling said some retailers were only provided with a single terminal. 'This is insufficient in handling peak-hour transactions. 'That's why I got in touch with them (Yayasan myKASIH), asking them whether or not we could request just one backup terminal because traders had been informed that in the event of a technical issue, the equipment must be sent to Kuala Lumpur for repairs, which could take time and cause much inconvenience to both the traders and the consumers.' Therefore, for Sabah and Sarawak, Ling suggested that an agency or non-governmental organisation (NGO) be appointed to handle the distribution of EDC terminals and barcode scanners under the Sara programme. 'This would ensure better understanding of local needs and challenges, and allow for more responsive support in the event of technical issues. 'It would also enhance the effectiveness of the federal government's initiative through the involvement of local agencies or NGOs. 'This is a request from the people and from the traders, for the benefit of all. Move to tighten MyKad safeguards ahead of RON95 subsidy rollout
ALOR STAR: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is tightening safeguards to prevent potential abuse of MyKad in the purchase of subsidised RON95 petrol, ahead of the rollout of a targeted fuel subsidy system. This follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that the price of RON95 petrol will be reduced from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre under the subsidy rationalisation plan, with implementation details expected to be announced in September. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the ministry and its relevant agencies were proactively identifying potential loopholes in the system. "For instance, foreign-registered vehicles are not allowed to buy subsidised fuel. But if a MyKad is used by these drivers, then we must be alert," she said during a press conference after an Op Kesan 4.0 enforcement inspection at a hypermarket here. Fuziah said the upcoming mechanism will rely on MyKad tracking to ensure subsidies reach only eligible Malaysians. "The fuel price reduction will take effect simultaneously with the new targeted system. Since it's for our citizens only, the use of MyKad is essential," she said. She said any unusual or excessive fuel purchase activity would be traceable through the system's records, providing an additional safeguard against misuse. She added that the ministry had also identified scenarios where a single identity card might be used repeatedly, raising red flags in the system.
