Uphold ‘Segulai Sejalai' spirit to ensure devt continuity, MP calls on Kapit folks
KUCHING (July 7): Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called upon the people in the constituency to continue with the spirit of 'Segulai Sejalai' (united in moving forward) in politics to ensure continuity of development plans in the area.
The Kapit Division, said the federal Works Minister, was once left behind from the development trend.
'But it has now begun to move forward with many infrastructure projects.
'Mega projects are being and will be implemented for the well-being and prosperity of the people,' he said in a Facebook post, uploaded in connection with a 'Leader With People' programme at Rumah Edison Bugap, Sungai Melekun in Baleh last Saturday, which gathered 124 'Tuai Rumah' (longhouse chieftains).
According to Nanta, the projects in Kapit include the construction of a bridge across Batang Rajang from Nanga Yong costing over RM300 million, the works on a road spanning over 2.5km meant to connect Song and Kapit districts, and other road projects to be built by the Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA).
'The government is building a road from Nanga Tulie directly to the Batang Rajang Bridge, not far from Nanga Yong.
'Upon completion, it will link to the roads to the upriver areas such as those in Sungai Melipis, Sungai Menuan and Sungai Ibau.
'Other projects include the construction of the Kolej Profesional Mara, the construction of a new police station, and the Bukit Goram national secondary school.
'The government has also approved the construction of a hotel, the construction of the Bujang Berani Square and several other development projects that will, directly and indirectly, benefit the community in Kapit,' said the Kapit MP.

On the event at Rumah Edison, Nanta hailed the success in gathering 124 chieftains as 'clear evidence of the people's full support for the leaders of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in Kapit'.
The event, held in conjunction with the inauguration of the works on the iron jetty and cement road, was attended by around 1,000 local residents.
Nanta added: 'This event is also evidence of the strong cooperation of the community with government agencies and departments; thus, reflecting strong support for the Madani Government.
'Indirectly, it also shows the strong support of the people, especially those in the Pelagus state constituency, to me as the member of Parliament for P215 Kapit, and the Minister of Works at the federal government level, as well as support for the Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang.'
At the event, Nanta and Nyabong also announced the hall construction project at Rumah Edison.
'I also announce a contribution of RM857,000 to over 60 longhouses, with assistance of RM500 per 'bilek' (household).
'The assistance is not only in appreciation of the presence of the chieftains with the JKKKs (village security and development committees) at the event – it is also a sign of appreciation for the unwavering support of the people in the Pelagus and Kapit constituencies for the GPS-led government and the Madani Government,' added Nanta. alexander nanta linggi community development Segulai Sejalai

NGO: Azam's apology to Teoh family shows compassion
KUALA LUMPUR: The apology tendered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock showed compassion on part of the graft-busters, a non-governmental organisation leader said today. "Though he doesn't have to do so legally, such a compassionate initiative ought to be followed by other government agencies where relevant," he said in a statement today. Earlier, MACC announced that the commission was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock to support the welfare and educational needs of his child. This follows findings from investigations into Teoh's death, which had spanned the past 16 years. Azam acknowledged the outcomes of previous probes, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry in 2011, the Court of Appeal's ruling in 2014, and the most recent police investigation, which had been classified as "No Further Action" (NFA) by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The commission also acknowledged that, on May 12, 2015, the government had paid RM600,000 in compensation to Teoh's family, along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956.

MACC's offer to Teoh's family an insult, says Ramasamy
Urimai chairman P Ramasamy said the MACC chief should maintain his silence if he could not genuinely assist by identifying the parties responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death. PETALING JAYA : Urimai chairman P Ramasamy this evening branded the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's offer of financial assistance to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock as an insult. Ramasamy said Teoh's family was seeking closure, namely the identification and prosecution of those behind the death of the former aide to a Selangor assemblyman. 'The last thing the family needs is financial aid,' he said in a Facebook post. He said if MACC chief Azam Baki could not genuinely assist by identifying the responsible parties, he should maintain his silence. Azam should not think that the provision of funds would bring this tragedy to a close, he said. Earlier today, MACC offered to give a goodwill contribution to Teoh's family as a 'gesture of compassion'. Azam said the latest investigation found insufficient evidence to charge anyone in Teoh's death, but maintained that MACC took a serious view of the incident. He also apologised to the family for the pain and suffering they had endured over the years. Teoh died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned for hours by MACC at its Selangor office in the same building. An inquest into his death was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Before 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but the outcome of both investigations were classified as 'no further action' by the public prosecutor. In 2015, Putrajaya paid RM600,000 to Teoh's family, as well as RM60,000 in legal costs, as part of a settlement over a civil suit filed by the family. The family had named the government and 12 others in the suit for negligence over his death.

Johor Seeks Federal Funds For Housing, Flood Mitigation, Waste Management Projects
JOHOR BAHRU, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Johor state government has submitted funding applications to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) for several key projects involving public housing, flood mitigation, and modern solid waste management. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the requests were presented during an official meeting with KPKT secretary-general Datuk Wira M Noor Azman Taib in Putrajaya today. The top priority, he said, was securing funds for the phased rejuvenation of the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) flats, which are in need of long-term maintenance and upgrades. 'This initiative is vital to ensure that older low-cost housing remains safe, comfortable, and habitable for residents,' he said in a Facebook post. Mohd Jafni added that Johor is also seeking approval to develop 1,000 housing units under the Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) programme, with the state government committing RM20,000 per unit as part of a cost-sharing initiative to help more people own homes. He said a special request was also made for funds to address flood-prone areas identified as high-risk zones across the state. He urged KPKT to approve phased interventions ahead of the monsoon season to protect vulnerable communities. Another proposal focused on the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project in Bukit Payong, which is expected to become a major driver of sustainable solid waste management in Johor by incorporating green technology. 'All these proposals are part of a clear and focused effort to improve the quality of life for Johoreans and strengthen the state's infrastructure.
