Railway officials would now travel on trains to inspect cleanliness, amenities, and safety, aiming to boost passenger confidence and ensure better service nationwide
Indian Railways has launched a new campaign to enhance passenger facilities by having railway officials travel on trains to inspect and address shortcomings first-hand. Passengers might find that the person sitting next to them is a railway official who could seek feedback during the journey.
These officials will check amenities such as toilets, charging points, lights, fans, availability of water, and cleanliness. If any deficiencies are found, the responsible officer must take immediate action.
This campaign is part of Indian Railways' vision to prioritise passenger convenience and quality service, aimed at boosting passenger confidence and ensuring smoother, safer journeys.
The campaign has begun in the Prayagraj division, where a team of 25 employees inspected 50 trains, uncovering several issues. This initiative will soon be extended to other railway divisions as well.
Plan For Better Facilities
The Prayagraj division is committed to providing passengers with clean toilets, pure drinking water, good food, and a comfortable journey. To curb ticketless travel and irregularities, the railway is also conducting ticket inspections at stations and onboard trains.
Inspections Conducted On Multiple Trains
Following directions from Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Coaching) Himanshu Shukla, 25 commercial inspectors carried out inspections on 50 trains, including train numbers 14163, 14113, 14114, 14116, 20403, 12403, 12417, 12275/76, 04125, 04154, 20404, 04121, 14117, 04152, 04141, 04138, 22431, 22432, 04156, 12418, 14118, 22437/38, 20433, 20434, 04126, 14164, 04115, 04116, 14115, and 12404.
The inspections focused on the cleanliness of coaches, toilets, lights, fans, air conditioning, water supply, linen, and charging points. Shukla confirmed that this campaign will continue to address complaints received through Rail Madad.
Regular Station Checks And Ticket Inspections
In addition to train inspections, regular and surprise ticket checks will be conducted at stations, on trains, and along railway sections to prevent fare evasion. This will not only improve passenger facilities but also make railway operations more efficient.

Railway Ministry approves survey for doubling of 77.96 km Jammu-Katra line

The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for the doubling of 77.96 km railway line between Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, aimed at improving connectivity and facilitating pilgrims, officials said on Wednesday. "This survey will cover a length of 77.96 km and its estimated cost will be Rs 12,59,17,363. It is going to lay the foundation for the construction of this future railway line," Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer, Northern Railway, said. The officials stated that the responsibility for implementing the entire project has been assigned to the Northern Railway. "This additional new line will greatly ease the travel of devotees who visit the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. It also reflects the efforts being made by Indian Railways to expand and modernise its network, especially in areas which are important from a strategic and public point of view," Upadhyay said. He added, "This initiative will not only promote pilgrimage and tourism but will also contribute to the economic development and progress of the Jammu region." According to the officials, at present, Jammu and Katra have a single line connectivity via Udhampur, which poses a hindrance in enhancing rail traffic and starting new trains because of a limited running capacity. "This strategic project reflects Indian Railways' commitment to improve access to important destinations and strengthen infrastructure," Upadhyay said. The officials also said that after the opening up of the Katra-Srinagar rail line, the connectivity up to Katra from the rest of the country has become crucial as it is expected that the number of people willing to visit the area will go up several times in future. "The Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat has received a huge response from the locals as well as the tourists. So, sanctioning the final location survey is a timely decision taken by the Railway Ministry. The doubling of the rail line between Jammu and Katra is a much-needed initiative," a senior railway official said. After IRCTC makes Aadhaar must, tatkal tickets in reach of common man

CHENNAI: The implementation of Aadhaar authentication for booking tatkal tickets online from July 1 has greatly reduced the long-standing issue of tickets selling out within seconds. Users are now reporting ticket availability up to 10 minutes after bookings open for tatkal seats. After bookings open at 10am, AC tatkal tickets were found to be available until 10.10am. Similarly, non-AC tickets which open at 11am were available from 11.05am to 11.08am, said passengers. According to regular train travellers, tatkal tickets are available for more than five minutes even on high-demand routes such as Chennai-Howrah, Chennai-New Delhi, and others. 'Aadhaar authentication has had a positive impact on bookings. Particularly, on the Chennai-Thanjavur/Kumbakonam/Tiruchy routes, tatkal tickets now remain available for 5-10 minutes after the bookings open, which wasn't the case earlier,' A Giri, former member of the Divisional Rail Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) for the Tiruchy division, said. Meanwhile, the OTP-based tatkal ticket booking system, which was scheduled to be launched on Tuesday by the Indian Railways, has been postponed as the integration of IRCTC portal with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is taking longer than expected. The roll-out for OTP authentication in tatkal bookings will be announced soon, official sources told the TNIE.
