This 40-year-old bottle of wine worth $180,000 is up for sale
Christie's is hosting its first wine auction since 2022 on June 12, brought to you by billionaire businessman, private collector and America's Cup winner, Bill Koch. The three-day event features 1,500 lots comprising nearly 8,000 bottles of historic vintages from his private collection, which has a low estimate of $15 million, but could exceed $21 million.
Bordeaux and Burgundy make up the lion's share, and at the heart of the collection is more than 750 large-format bottles — including over 45 Jeroboams (three liters) and Methuselahs (six liters) from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
In fact, the revered wine producer makes up the entirety of the top 10 by value list, with number one — a 1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Côte de Nuits Grand Cru — seeing a high estimate of $180,000.
'A Chicago wine dealer brought this bottle to my attention in 1988. He acquired it from Europe,' Koch told The Post, referring to himself as a wine 'geek.'
6 Bill Koch said he's amassed some 43,000 bottles across his cellars at his estates in Palm Beach, Cape Cod and Aspen.

'I have loved large-format bottles because they take longer to mature,' he explained. 'It has to do with surface space and oxygen. The larger the bottle, the less exposure to oxygen, the better the wine ages. But putting aside my geekiness, this wine is one of the vintages my wife loves to drink. She has great taste. It was an excellent year for Burgundy.'
Indeed, 1985 was a great year for wine, but this is also a big one. A methuselah holds six liters — or eight standard bottles.
'$120,000 divided by 203.2 ounces equals $590-plus per ounce,' said Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate's Wine Reviewer for Canada, Napa Valley and New York State regions.
'That's the low estimate, which doesn't include the buyer's premium. If it goes to the high estimate, you're talking upwards of $900 per ounce.'
6 Experts told The Post the auction will dazzle wine enthusiasts.

Jhonel Faelnar, beverage director for NAEUN Hospitality, which includes New York City's Atoboy, Naro and two-Michelin-starred Atomix, believes it to be one of the best vintages ever produced.
'Romanée-Conti is, of course, one of the most storied vineyards in Burgundy and in the world, coming from one of the most hallowed producers of Pinot Noir ever to exist,' he said. 'I would certainly like to drink this bottle, were I to have the chance to.'
He said the $180,000 price is worth it — for 'the people who can afford' it.
'These wines are pieces of history, and it's a special moment to encounter these, especially if you can be a part of opening and tasting them,' said Faelnar.
While the collection features a variety of price points — the 1929 Château Haut-Brion going for $2,000 to $3,000 caught Faelnar's attention — he said some may be too rich for one's blood.

'You're bidding for a piece of art at this point — one you can potentially imbibe and ingest,' Faelnar said.
'Oftentimes, they can be disappointing in the glass — they are, after all, hundred-year-old bottles of wine. But the anticipation that it might be every bit as amazing as one can hope for, fuels every collector's hopes and folly.'
Six magnums of the 1982 Château Mouton-Rothschild are also up for the taking for a tune of $9,000 to $14,000. This particular vintage unlocks a core memory for Koch, sharing it with Will Smith's agent, Jim Lassiter. (Yes, that Will Smith.)
'He came to my house with Steve Tisch and David Bloomfield of Escape Artists,' he recalled. 'They had purchased the movie rights to the book 'Billionaire's Vinegar' [and] were looking for my participation and investment capital. The superb wine was the only thing we agreed on that evening.'
6 Koch referred to himself as a wine 'geek' and keeps a massive collection across residences. Pictured here is his Palm Beach cellar.

Koch said his chemical engineering background helped influence his wine collecting. At one point, he had upwards of 43,000 bottles across his cellars at his estates in Palm Beach, Cape Cod and Aspen.
He views the auction as a gift that keeps on giving — it's a part of a wine collection that he's spent half a century curating.
'These bottles reflect my taste, my interest in history, my passion for collecting and my respect for the care and work that goes into developing great wines, year after year,' he said of his lot, now at 21,000 bottles. 'I have some of the world's best wines, stored in a state-of-the-art cellar and more carefully researched and vetted than any collection I know of. I am enormously proud of it.'
6 'I just don't think we will see many more collections like this come to market again,' said Adam Bilbey, Christie's Global Head of Wine and Spirits. 'This is a chance to be part of vinous history.'

Koch told The Post that after the sale, he will 'still have about 12,000' bottles in his cellar, but doesn't 'expect to add to that.'
'As for the ones I am parting with, which include 45 large-format bottles, it would take two lifetimes and a daily regime of parties to go through them all. It's time for others to enjoy them.'

NYC fishermen beg Trump to rethink offshore windfarm OK'd during Biden admin
Commercial fishing workers pleaded with President Trump to again maroon a wind project off the Long Island shore – arguing Tuesday the green energy initiative could throw the industry into disarray. Business and environmental organizations gathered at the Fulton Fish Market Cooperative in the Bronx early Tuesday to emphasize the devastating effects the Empire Wind One project could have on fishermen's jobs and marine life. The Trump administration temporarily paused the project in April while it was already under construction, launching a review of the permits issued during former President Joe Biden's administration. The stop was lifted a month later. 3 Critics of the project want Trump to intervene again. Getty Images But Bonnie Brady, the executive director of the Long Island Commercial Fishing Association, claimed White House officials don't know how damaging the project is. 'If new information came to him that he was made aware of that made him understand the severity of the situation, I think he's a good American like anyone else that wants to keep this country safe and I think he'd act accordingly,' she told The Post in an interview. Critics of the project – constructed by Norwegian-based Equinor and meant to power some 500,000 homes — argued offshore wind farms can interfere with navigational radar used by ships and smaller boats that could lead to collisions or hamper water rescue efforts. Commercial fisheries also catch an assortment of seafood in the area where the wind turbines are going up, advocates said. Brady and Fulton Fish Market Cooperative CEO Nicole Ackerina said its members would welcome Trump to the area to learn more about the potential pitfalls of Empire Wind One from workers who make up a chunk of his GOP base. 'The reality is that especially seafood and fishing, we're a large population of the Trump-supporters base, especially in New York and New Jersey for him,' Ackerina told The Post. 'So we're kind of of the perspective the only reason why this project is proceeding at this point is probably strictly because of political reasons and political agendas at the city and state level so we'd love the opportunity for him to actually sit down with the people that voted for him and with a industry he claims to align with.' Equinor has said it is committed working with mariners and fishermen to avoid and minimize any potential effects the project could have, according to its website. 3 Map of Empire Wind Project The seafood industry generates billions a year across New York and New Jersey and employs more than 140,000 workers in the two states, according to the groups against the project. 'They are the last of the hunters in a sense of harvesting high-protein, unspoiled seafood source,' Brady said. 'Someone is forgetting about them.' A lawsuit was filed against the Trump administration by various fishing companies and other opponents in June, calling on the president to re-implement the stop work order that was previously put in place by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. An email to the interior Department was not immediately returned Tuesday. The Post has also sought comment from Equinor. 3 The turbines would help power thousands of homes. Empire Wind The project is backed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams in part because it'll help meet a state law that mandates 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040 and the phasing out of fossil fuels by 2050. Trump has spoken out against wind farms in the past, but Republican mega-donor and billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis said the president told him he can't stop it because the approvals were OK'd before he took office. The project will be built 15-30 miles south of Long Island and made up of 54 wind turbines, according to a project website.

Worker at Hochul's hand-picked CDPAP payment firm allegedly siphons off cash meant for participants
ALBANY – A worker with the firm at the center of Gov. Kathy Hochul's scandal-plagued Medicaid homecare program allegedly siphoned off cash from potentially thousands of participants. The employee of Public Partnerships, LLC — the company hand-picked by Hochul's administration to act as the sole payment go-between for the state and participants in the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program — had been falsifying the direct-deposit information of up to 10,000 participants, sources told The Post. 3 Gov. Kathy Hochul's Medicaid homecare program is faced with yet another scandal. Mike Groll/Office of Governor Kathy Hochul The New York program pays for people to take care of disabled or elderly loved ones and recently hired the company to eliminate the loads of middlemen payment firms and instead funnel everything through it. The company discovered last week that one of its employees was directing homecare participants' paychecks to fraudulent bank accounts, including some overseas, sources said. 'There was an agent who worked on the phones who got fired a week ago, who was misdirecting direct deposits to the wrong accounts and sending money to offshore accounts as well,' a PPL employee told The Post. The source said the FBI was involved, though a rep for the federal agency would not confirm the existence of an investigation when asked by The Post on Tuesday. It was not immediately clear how many assistants have been impacted by the breach, but the number could be upwards of 10,000 people, sources said. It also is not clear how long the scheme has been going on or exactly how much Medicaid cash has been lost, though the figure could feasibly reach hundreds of thousands of dollars since PPL began paying assistants in April. 'It just keeps getting worse,' a PPL worker said of the massive turmoil surrounding Hochul's attempt to consolidate hundreds of payroll middlemen companies under one firm. A rep for PPL confirmed to The Post that an employee was 'terminated for not following the approved procedures' and is being 'investigated' but did not comment further, including to refute the allegations. Hochul's office did not comment on the allegations that funds were being siphoned into fraudulent bank accounts. 3 Hochul and state legislators slipped a provision into last year's state budget to consolidate hundreds of murky payroll middlemen firms for CDPAP into one firm hand-picked by the state. goodluz – The alleged theft is only the latest scandal to taint the program. The firm has already been dealing with a phishing scam using phony Google Ads to target participants into coughing up their personal information, though it says none of its systems have been compromised. 'We have confirmed that fewer than 100 [personal assistants] out of more than 225,000 across New York State were victimized by this scam,' PPL said in a statement. 'We will ensure that every PA is reimbursed for any lost wages.' The governor's office said PPL notified the state of the phishing scam and that it was proof that the move to consolidate the firms was working. 'When PPL reported a recent phishing scam, the State ensured PPL took action to address it,' Hochul spokesperson Sam Spokony wrote in a statement to The Post. 3 PPL President Maria Perrin is resigning within the next 60 days — one of several leadership changes amongst the private equity firm's top ranks in recent weeks. YouTube/Public Partnerships PPL 'This immediate review and response would not have been possible under the old CDPAP system, which was plagued by hundreds of wasteful middlemen.' But Hochul also has been under intense scrutiny from critics on both sides of the political aisle who've accused the state of rigging the bid for PPL and ramming through the transition on an unrealistic timeline, amongst other complaints. The Post was first to report that serious career prosecutors from the DOJ's Consumer Affairs Branch are investigating PPL and the CDPAP transition. Earlier this month, the state reached a legal settlement with the New York Legal Assistance group to push back a deadline for people to register with the new firm. The company source said they believe PPL's president, Maria Perrin, is taking the fall for the breach after she announced her resignation internally over the weekend. 'I think they needed someone to take the fall for that, and Maria happened to be handy, and she just resigned, she's gone,' the employee said. A company rep denied that Perrin's departure had anything to do with the data breaches. Perrin's departure comes amid a slough of resignations at the top of echelons of the private-equity-owned firm's ranks. PPL's head honcho, CEO Vince Coppola, resigned last week, the Albany Times Union said. The Post's well-placed PPL source said Executive Vice President Vicente Armendariz, who helped lead the New York transition, resigned within the past month. The company rep did not comment on Armendariz. 'With the CDPAP transition nearing completion and the operation entering a steady state, Maria is confident that PPL is prepared to succeed when she exits in the fall,' a PPL representative told Politico, which was first to report her resignation Monday. The governor's office and the state Department of Health have been defending the firm for months, claiming that as recently as May 15, 98% of 198,000 fully-onboarded CDPAP assistants at the time had submitted timecards and received paychecks. But Ilana Berger, political director of Caring Majority Rising, a group that has fought to reverse the transition, wrote in a blistering statement. 'Between this breach and a leadership exodus, it's clear PPL is in complete chaos. 'A competent organization would have had systems in place to immediately address a security issue like this – instead, PPL has made a bad situation significantly worse, creating widespread confusion for workers and consumers who depend on CDPAP for their wages and care. This is yet another glaring sign that PPL is fundamentally unfit for the job.'

JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon, Wall Street bigs snub Zohran Mamdani meeting
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon and other Wall Street titans were planning to skip a widely anticipated Tuesday meeting with hard-left New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, The Post has learned. The 33-year-old socialist firebrand, who handily defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary on June 24, was slated to attend meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday arranged by Partnership for NYC — a powerful group whose members include the city's biggest banks, law firms and corporations. But Dimon snubbed the Israel-bashing, Ugandan-born firebrand and his bid to schmooze with the city's business bigwigs and soothe their concerns. Advertisement 3 Mamdani has been making an outreach to NYC business bigwigs via renowned power broker Kathlyn Wylde. Andrew Schwartz / The 69-year-old Dimon — who branded Mamdani a 'Marxist' at an event in Ireland on Thursday — had an unspecified scheduling 'conflict,' accoridng to the bank. 'He had other commitments and was unable to attend,' a JPMorgan spokesperson told The Post. According to sources familiar with the matter, a number of other Wall Street hotshots stayed away, too — sending non-executive underlings in their place. Advertisement 'Everyone is just in listening mode,' joked one banking bigwig. Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, Bank of America's Brian Moynihan, and Citi boss Jane Fraser did not plan to take part, sources said. The insiders pointed to the firms' all having quarterly results coming out on Tuesday and Wednesday. BofA is headquartered in Charlotte, NC and, arguably, more shielded from any prospective Mamdani administration. Advertisement 3 JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon lashed out at fellow Democrats over their obsession with DEI policies, labeling them 'idiots.' REUTERS The Democrat candidate wants to freeze rents and hike taxes to bankroll free childcare and free buses, as well as create government-run grocery stores to battle rising food prices. 'That's the same ideological mush that means nothing in the real world,' Dimon told Thursday's conference organized by the Irish foreign ministry in Dublin. The long-serving chief executive also used the powwow to take pot shots at the Democratic Party. Advertisement Dimon, who has long been rumored to have political ambitions of his own and was once floated as a possible Treasury Secretary, slammed his fellow Democrats for their obsession with divisive DEI policies. 3 Insiders said BofA CEO Brian Moynihan is currently in Charlotte, North Carolina, to prepare for the bank's quarterly results on Wednesday. REUTERS 'I have a lot of friends who are Democrats, and they're idiots. I always say they have big hearts and little brains,' the plain-speaking banker told the audience in Dublin. 'They do not understand how the real world works. Almost every single policy rolled out failed.' Banking regulations have been a matter of concern for the JPMorgan CEO for years. In October, he lashed out at the Biden administration over its anti-business stance and used his annual shareholder letter in April to accuse its officials of stifling growth with 'blue tape.' Earlier this year, JPMorgan and several other Wall Street banks scrubbed DEI language from their websites soon after President Trump took office,
