Central Michigan says it's working with NCAA 'toward negotiated resolution' over Connor Stalions' alleged presence at 2023 season opener

Central Michigan says it's working with the NCAA to resolve allegations against the school stemming from Conor Stalions' advance scouting scheme. The infamous former Michigan staffer was allegedly on the sidelines in Central Michigan gear for the Chippewas' Week 1 game at Michigan State in 2023. In October of that year, Central Michigan said it was investigating how a man looking like Stalions got on the sidelines with a sideline pass from CMU. He was spotted multiple times on the FS1 broadcast of the game and appeared to hide his face at times. The NCAA's investigation began at the same time the school said it was looking into Stalions' potential presence at the game. Per the NCAA's online database, the school was served with a notice of allegations on June 27. The school said in a statement Tuesday that it had not received the NOA but has been 'working collaboratively' with the NCAA since the fall of 2023. Jim McElwain was the team's head coach during the 2023 season and retired at the end of the 2024 season. McElwain is reportedly a subject of the NOA and has said that he was unaware if Stalions was on the sideline for the game. Jake Kostner, a Michigan graduate, spent multiple years with the school and abruptly resigned from his position as quarterbacks coach in September of 2024 with no reason given. Stalions, who hasn't said publicly if he was at the CMU game, was a central figure of the 2023 college football season as Michigan went undefeated and won the national title. Stalions has been accused of going to games of future Michigan opponents to record and decode their signals. Sign stealing is not against NCAA rules. However, NCAA rules prohibit in-person scouting. Michigan received its formal notice of allegations for the scandal a year ago and coach Sherrone Moore is reportedly set to receive a self-imposed two-game ban during the upcoming season as part of the fallout. As Michigan plays at Oklahoma in Week 2, Moore is expected to serve his suspension in Week 3 and Week 4. That Week 3 game is, coincidentally, against Central Michigan and the following game is against Nebraska. Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the final three games of the 2023 regular season by the Big Ten under the league's sportsmanship provision as the Stalions scandal blew up. Harbaugh returned for the Big Ten title game and the College Football Playoff as the Wolverines beat Washington for the national title.
