Aplazo to offer BNPL payments for cross-border e-commerce purchases

This collaboration enables international online merchants to offer their customers in Mexico accessible financing options tailored to their needs.
For the first time, APLAZO will be available for cross-border e-commerce purchases through EBANX's payment platform. By combining alternative payments like APLAZO with local cards, global companies can reach over three times more Mexican consumers compared to relying solely on international acquirers, according to EBANX analysis. This allows merchants to target an additional customer base of 72 million people in the country, according to Payments and Commerce Market Intelligence (PCMI).
'Mexico is one of the most dynamic markets in Latin America, where e-commerce is expected to grow 25% annually until 2027, with digital payment adoption aligned with this growth,' says Eduardo de Abreu, VP of Product at EBANX, citing PCMI data. 'Partnering with APLAZO will allow us to expand our local reach and offer our global clients an alternative that directly responds to the preferences of Mexican consumers,' adds Abreu.
The integration of EBANX and APLAZO solutions will allow merchants to offer a more flexible payment experience, potentially generating tangible benefits such as increased average ticket size, higher purchase frequency, reduced cart abandonment, and access to new market segments, all through a seamless and simple integration.

BNPL in Mexico
BNPL is gaining traction in e-commerce in Mexico: the payment method is expected to grow by 20% in online sales this year, according to data from PCMI, and continue accelerating at an annual rate of 16% through 2027.
This growth is being driven by strong adoption among younger generations. Data from APLAZO shows that 38% of millennials and 31% of Gen Z consumers in Mexico already use BNPL as a payment method.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has just announced that buy now, pay later is going to be fully regulated from July, 2026 - here is what you need to know In recent years, a new form of 'free' credit has revolutionised the way we Brits shop. It's simple, popular and you can use it to buy pretty much anything you can think of, from clothes to cars. Buy now, pay later (BNPL) credit is available at virtually every online store you visit. Retailers love it, because it allows us all to buy more than we can afford. It also makes us more likely to commit to buy what's in the online basket, rather than walking away if money is tight that month. Credit firms love it as they get paid in a variety of ways for offering this type of lending on behalf of retailers. And many readers love it too, as I find out every time I write about my BNPL concerns when I criticise aspects of the industry! But those concerns are justified. BNPL allows, or even encourages people to 'sleepwalk' in to debt, by making it easier to purchase things we neither want or need – and can't afford. It's been used for silly, frivolous purchases like pizza. And most concerningly, some firms have been worryingly quick to lend to people massively in debt, or to pass on outstanding balances to debt collectors far too quickly. So it's good news that the regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has just announced that BNPL is going to be fully regulated from 15 July, 2026. The FCA has also announced a whole range of new rules and requirements for the industry to tackle some of these concerns. Here's my guide to how BNPL works. BNPL works by giving you a short-term loan, with or without interest, so you can buy goods or services even if you can't afford to pay the full price up front. Retailers have been actively pushing BNPL credit and you'll be hard pressed to find one that doesn't offer BNPL when you shop online. There are three main types of BNPL credit. Limited instalments The most well-known form of BNPL deal works by letting you pay in a limited number of instalments interest-free – usually in three payments. This means you can buy things up front that you may not have the money for in full at point of purchase. However, you have committed to buy. This is unregulated at the moment. Try before you buy This is where you have a short period of time – usually 30 days but sometimes as low as 14 days – to 'inspect' goods before committing to buy them. These deals allow you to try things on, check goods out and see if they work for you before committing to buy. However, if you don't return the goods on time, you could find you've bought them. Bear in mind the 14 days just mirrors your existing online shopping rights under the Consumer Rights Act. This is unregulated at the moment. Credit agreements These deals are closer to the older credit deals in that you pay in instalments over a longer period and pay interest. This isn't as high as some retailers charged in the past – it's usually less than credit card interest - but is still higher than a standard bank loan. How popular is buy now, pay later lending? There are lots of different types of regulated credit agreement out there. These include: Personal loans Overdrafts Car finance Short term, high interest loans (formerly payday lending, but over longer periods of time) Catalogue credit Regulated BNPL loans Unregulated buy now, pay later loans are referred to by the regulator as 'Deferred Payment Credit (DPCs) – and they are massively popular. It's estimated that around 11 million people used BNPL credit last year alone for short term borrowing. That's 20% of all adults (up 3% from the year before). However, 1.1 million people had over £500 outstanding on their unregulated BNPL loans. Just under 10% of people used BNPL to pay for essential goods, like food or utility bills. What happens if you can't pay? While BNPL firms may not charge debt interest, many readers have reported that businesses are quick to pass on debts to debt collectors who have a whole range of penalties and pressure tactics they can apply – and they can register financial debts with credit reference agencies. Worryingly, this can happen for relatively small sums. What do the new rules say? According to the FCA, from next year businesses offering BNPL will have to: Carry out upfront checks to make sure people can repay what they borrow. Offer 'fairer and faster access to refunds' You'll also have the right to complain to the Financial Ombudsman like other regulated forms of credit. At present, BNPL firms are rather vague about the checks they undertake to see if you can afford to borrow money. With most forms of lending the business will undertake a 'soft' or 'hard' credit check to see if you can afford to borrow. Soft checks don't go on to your credit file, hard ones do. If the lender doesn't check your credit file, it won't know how much you've borrowed – which means you might be hopelessly in debt and they won't know. You might also have multiple BNPL loans too. At the height of the payday lending frenzy, the average number of loans per borrower was seven. So people were drowning in debt and just getting in deeper. These new proposals will mean that stricter affordability checks will be required which should identify people who are overstretched financially and are already in debt. The FCA estimates that over the next decade, this will mean that people will be £1.8 billion better off. Assuming that they don't borrow money elsewhere instead, that is.

Donald Trump's Scotland visit branded 'cynical circus' by his nemesis in land ba
A Scotsman who helped to see off Donald Trump in a long-running land battle has branded the US president's trip to the country a 'PR stunt' aimed at promoting his golf courses. David Milne and others in Aberdeenshire were embroiled in the David v Goliath struggle with Trump over access and land rights as one of the venues was built on the Menie Estate. The president is due to arrive in Scotland tonight for a five-day visit amid tight security, with protests expected. He plans to visit a new golf course close to Milne's home and visit his other green, 200 miles south at Turnberry on the Ayrshire Coast. The visit is 'an annoyance with no real value' in Mr Milne's view. 'I would describe his trip as a rather cynical circus, a PR stunt more than anything else,' he said. 'It's his personal situation, all he's ever interested in is himself, and how things affect him. 'He's opening a second golf course alongside one that's never busy. 'They have got a competition starting next week, so it's all going to get free publicity, free advertising because the president is here, he invites along Sir Keir Starmer and John Swinney and the British government has to pay for the security for his visit. 'It's a cynical PR stunt from day one.' Mr Milne, 61, and his fellow campaigners fought the tycoon after he tried to purchase their homes to develop his 1,400-acre Trump International Golf Links, Scotland resort in the village of Balmedie. They formed a 'popular movement' called 'Tripping up Trump' to protect people's homes and the environment from the work. At one point, the Scotsman flew the Mexican flag in reference to Trump's intention to build a wall between the country and the US. In 2021, the billionaire was reported to have described the Milnes' home of more than three decades in a former coastguard station as a 'visual slum.' He also spoke of issuing compulsory purchase orders to buy land within or on the resort's boundaries. The saga died down in 2009 after the locals refused to sell. Mr Milne told Metro: 'Initially the Trump organisation was a complete and utter pain when they planted trees around us, built earth banks around us, built fences in the wrong place and billed me for it and tried to compulsorily purchase my property. 'It doesn't endear you to people. 'The last few years I think they've realised they were onto a loser and they've left us alone, which is obviously a better situation for us.' The health and safety consultant believes Trump should focus his attentions on some of the world's troublespots where the US has far more pressing concerns. 'He is currently supposed to be the US President,' he said. 'He is doing nothing to control the Israelis in Gaza, he's doing nothing to support the Ukrainians, and he's made no mention of the Israeli attacks on Syria or on other states, and their interfering with Iran. There are a lot of things he could be doing other than playing around with golf.' The Trump opponent also highlighted the disruption in preparation for Air Force One landing at Prestwick Airport in western Scotland this evening for the president's private visit to the golf courses. 'It's going to be a pain in the proverbials,' he said. 'It's causing everyone a lot of hassle. The main road's going to be closed, the barricades were up already this morning. 'It's just a nuisance, an annoyance without any real value. 'Some of our neighbours have gone away to avoid it all.' Trump's mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles. The new golf course, due to open on August 13, is named after Mary Anne, who emigrated to the US in 1930. 'We know where his priorities lie and they're not with Scotland,' Mr Milne said of the connection. 'We're just a convenient little symbol that he can tack on to the end of his marketing stuff.' The Mexican flag is gone for good but blue and white will be on display outside the Milnes' home this weekend. 'The only flag I'll be flying this weekend is the Saltire,' Mr Milne said. 'That is to show this is still Scotland and the Scottish people, generally speaking, don't like Trump.' The president's representatives have said in the past that the golf estate development was hampered by 'red tape', despite potentially generating thousands of jobs for the local economy. In a statement to the BBC, the Trump Organization has said that it has invested 'hundreds of millions of pounds into the Scottish economy' and that both the Menie and Turnberry courses are 'driving thousands of international visitors into the country each year'. More Trending The company added: 'There are very few, if any, investors in the sport that have done more for Scottish golf in the past decade than Trump. 'In spite of the many global economic challenges, where other investors walked away, and despite spiteful opposition, the Trump Organization has remained steadfast in its commitment and delivered on its promise to build one of the greatest modern links golf courses of all time in Aberdeen.' US Gulf refiners seek MidEast, S.American oil to offset Venezuela, Mexico losses
HOUSTON, July 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Gulf Coast refiners are snapping up higher volumes of Middle Eastern and South American crudes to offset the loss of Venezuelan and Mexican barrels, according to ship tracking data, a workaround solution that might be short-lived if the U.S. allows some sanctioned Venezuelan crude to return to the market. The shake-up in trade flows reflects a shortage of medium and heavy crude grades at the key Gulf Coast refining hub which has struggled in recent months to secure adequate supplies amid Mexican production and quality challenges, and Washington's pressure strategy on Venezuela's sanctioned energy industry. The U.S. Treasury Department in March revoked key licenses that allowed some companies to export Venezuelan oil and fuel to the U.S. after President Donald Trump criticized the OPEC nation's record on migration and democracy. However, the administration is now preparing to grant new authorizations to key partners of Venezuela's state-run PDVSA to allow them to operate with limitations, which could include oil swaps, five sources close to the matter said this week. The U.S. imported about 175,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Venezuelan crude on average this year before the licenses were revoked, accounting for about 16% of Gulf Coast oil imports, according to data from research firm Kpler. Meanwhile, imports of popular Mexican heavy grade Maya have fallen to 172,000 bpd so far in July, the lowest on record due to declining output and quality issues that have cut interest in the grade. To replace those volumes, Gulf Coast refiners are resorting to other South American producers such as Colombia, Brazil and Guyana, with imports in July reaching the highest in over five years. Shipments of heavy, high-sulfur crude from Colombia, including Castilla and Vasconia grades, more than doubled to 225,000 bpd so far in July, the highest monthly level in three years. In the same period, some refiners also stepped up imports of medium, lower sulfur, crudes from Guyana such as Unity Gold and Payara Gold to about 95,000 bpd, while heavy, high-sulfur oil from Brazil, including Peregrino, rose 58% to 57,000 bpd. Gulf Coast imports of oil from the Middle East, mainly Iraqi Qaiyarah, Kuwait's Eocene and Saudi Arabia's medium sour Arab Light, also ramped up sharply this month to 212,000 bpd, the highest since January. The bulk of the crude oil produced in the United States is light and low in sulfur, not ideal for refineries in the U.S. Gulf that typically prefer to process heavier oil. Switching to crude grades of vastly different characteristics can be operationally challenging and limit production, shrinking margins. If sanctioned Venezuelan oil returns to the U.S. market through the Washington-authorized swaps, many Gulf Coast refiners might again switch to their preferred heavy grades, which helps their margins.
