Egypt PM says recent economic crisis over, calls for price cuts - Society

Al-Ahram Weekly4 days ago
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Tuesday that Egypt has overcome its recent economic crisis, calling for a tangible drop in commodity prices.
'All indicators of Egypt's economic performance are positive, but the current prices of goods do not align at all with this improvement,' Madbouly said at a meeting with merchants and manufacturers in New Alamein City.
He urged identifying causes that will lead to a downward trajectory in prices.
'Just as prices rose in previous periods due to the challenges we faced, they must now decline,' a cabinet statement quoted Madbouly as saying.
He underlined the government's efforts to ensure the availability of various goods and production inputs for factories.
'We have succeeded in achieving this through full stability and a commitment from the banking system to provide all the foreign currency requirements for imports over the recent period,' he said.
Madbouly stressed that citizens now need to see a genuine drop in commodity prices, particularly given the recent strengthening of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar.
The Egyptian pound has seen a modest appreciation against the US dollar, with the official exchange rate falling below EGP 49 for the first time since late October 2024, nearly nine months ago.
Since early 2022, Egypt has faced prolonged economic pressures, including a foreign currency shortage that drove up prices of most goods, particularly food.
In response, the government began implementing measures to boost US dollar liquidity in the domestic market, aiming to release goods stockpiled at ports and restore market stability amid soaring inflation.
Madbouly instructed the President of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce to convene the heads of all commercial chambers and agree on genuine price reductions across a range of goods.

Egypt's Petroleum Min. Announces Arrival of Floating Regasification Unit at Jordan's Aqaba Port

Taarek Refaat Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed on Saturday the arrival of the ENERGOS FORCE floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the Port of Aqaba in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The move marks a key step toward connecting the facility to the Arab Gas Pipeline and commencing operations to regasify liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments in line with network demand and operational requirements. The development underscores the deep and ongoing energy cooperation between Egypt and Jordan, reflecting broader regional integration and mutual use of existing infrastructure to maximize benefits on both sides. According to the ministry, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) finalized the contract for the ENERGOS FORCE as part of an integrated strategy to secure gas supplies for the domestic market and key sectors, most notably electricity generation and industry, particularly during peak demand periods. The agreement also aims to diversify feedstock into Egypt's national gas grid and ensure rapid response capabilities to any emergencies or operational changes. The ministry stressed its commitment to continuously upgrading Egypt's gas infrastructure while bolstering Arab energy cooperation, with the dual goals of enhancing national energy security and meeting the needs of citizens and vital economic sectors. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Federal Reserve Governor Kugler Resigns amid Sharp Split over Interest Rates

Taarek Refaat Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler announced her resignation on Friday, creating a key vacancy just as President Donald Trump intensifies his push for steep interest rate cuts, in a rare and highly publicized rift within the U.S. central bank. In a letter addressed to President Trump, Kugler did not specify her reasons for stepping down, noting only that she would return to Georgetown University as a professor this fall. 'It has been a tremendous honor to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve,' Kugler wrote. 'I am especially proud to have served during a critical time in fulfilling our dual mandate of bringing down inflation while maintaining a strong and resilient labor market.' Kugler's term was originally set to expire in January 2026. Her departure paves the way for Trump to nominate his own candidate to the seven-member Board of Governors. According to CNBC, two of Trump's previous appointees, Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, voted against the Fed's decision on Wednesday to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged, signaling instead their preference for an immediate rate cut. The Federal Reserve held rates steady in its latest policy meeting, but remarks from Chair Jerome Powell afterward dampened expectations that borrowing costs would begin to fall in September. This triggered frustration from Trump, who has called for swift and deep rate reductions to stimulate the economy. The policy decision passed by a narrow 9–2 vote, an unusually divided outcome for a consensus-driven institution. It marked the first time in more than three decades that two Fed governors dissented from the majority on a key interest rate decision. The President nominates all members of the Fed's Board of Governors, subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Kugler's resignation now gives Trump a critical opportunity to further reshape the central bank at a pivotal moment for U.S. monetary policy. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
