Steven Sim: No economy should sacrifice worker rights for trade deals, urges Apec nations to strengthen cross-border protections

By: Bernama Text Size: Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said that workers' wellbeing is a critical and non-negotiable component of the Malaysian government's agenda. — Bernama pic PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has emphasised the need for greater cross-border sharing of ideas, best practices and policies to safeguard workers' wellbeing at the 7th APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting (HRDMM), held today in Jeju, South Korea. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim in his address at the meeting reaffirmed that workers' wellbeing is a critical and non-negotiable component of the Malaysian government's agenda. 'I am extremely fortunate to continuously learn from the insights of colleagues in Asean and beyond. Even during this meeting, I have benefited from the experiences of other member economies in managing policies for platform workers, as I prepare to table Malaysia's historic Gig Workers Bill in the second half of this year,' he said. Sim added that platforms like APEC should do more to facilitate formal exchanges of such knowledge and practices among member economies. He also underscored the importance of a data-driven approach to understanding job market trends. 'For example, the Malaysian impact report I cited today breaks down the types of jobs affected in different sectors due to new economic trends, enabling the government to design more effective policy interventions,' he said. Sim highlighted a TalentCorp, the strategic think tank under the Ministry of Human Resources, report, titled Impact Study of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital, and the Green Economy on the Malaysian Workforce. 'As we look into this issue, we discovered a stark truth staring back at us: that our citizen workers will not be replaced by foreigners but by computers and computer softwares, many of which are produced natively in our country,' he said. Sim called for unwavering commitment to the protection of workers' rights and wellbeing, urging all economies to uphold this principle even in matters of trade and investment. 'No business deal should come at the cost of workers' welfare, and no economy should be penalised for prioritising worker protection,' he added. Sim is leading the Malaysian delegation to the HRDMM in Jeju, which is being held for the first time in 11 years, with the last meeting taking place in Vietnam in 2014. 'Hypocritical to act against Chinese school's upside-down flag when minister has yet to act on own flag blunder'
BRICKBATS have been hurled at Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek for vowing to take strict action against SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson for flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down. There is little doubt that the PKR Wanita chief who is awaiting a full investigation report into the matter is pressured to act given the opposition which has a bone to pick with DAP has played up the matter to perfection on various social media platforms. Patriotism isn't just about the flag but respect and responsibility.' What infuriated sensible Malaysians with regard to Fadhlina's purported action is that the school has apologised for the incident that happened on Aug 1. A statement jointly issued by the school board, administration and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) explained that the error occurred when a school employee was installing flags before the end of their work hours. 'However, due to carelessness, one of the flags was installed upside down. This incident was recorded by the public and uploaded to social media,' read the statement. 'The school received the information around 5pm and took corrective measures immediately.' That Fadhlina is succumbing to political pressure to act against the school rather than to just conduct an internal probe for what is seemingly a 'honest mistake' has irked Malaysiakini subscribers who mocked her for giving the matter a full-blown treatment. 'Fadhlina, are there any countries or organisations which have not ACCIDENTALLY flown their flags upside down? Have YOU not made any mistakes at all?' rued DarkHorse. 'A sensible person would have considered the number of times the flag flown in the correct orientation vs the flag flown upside down before initiating an investigation. That would have been a good indication whether flying the flag upside down is accidental or otherwise.' Others berated the Nibong Tebal MP for 'having nothing better to do' when there is an array of weaknesses in the education system such as 'getting to the root of bully culture in schools and institutes of higher learning' or simply to emulate Finland in the quest to improve the quality of Malaysian education. The best reaction which gave Fadhlina a taste of her own medicine came from BluePanther4725 who wondered if she has taken any action over the flag blunder by her own ministry in April this year. Nine Malaysian firms make the cut in Forbes Asia's Best Under A Billion 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Malaysian companies have been included in Forbes Asia's Best Under a Billion 2025 list, which puts the spotlight on 200 Asia-Pacific companies with annual sales above USUS$10mil and below US$1bil. The nine Malaysian companies in this year's list are Able Global Bhd , Crescendo Corp Bhd , Frontken Corp Bhd , Hibiscus Petroleum Bhd , Hup Seng Industries Bhd , ITMax System Bhd , Kerjaya Prospek Group Bhd , Pekat Group Bhd and Scientex Bhd . There are fewer Malaysian companies on the list in 2025 as compared to the 11 that made it in 2024. Able Global was the only Malaysian company that appeared in both years. Malaysia's nine inclusions gives it the third-most representation on the list among countries in Southeast Asia, with only Thailand (17) and Indonesia (10) featuring more companies. "With trade tensions looming over the Asia-Pacific region, growth is predicted to continue to slow, according to the International Monetary Fund. "Despite these challenges, the annual Best Under A Billion list showcases businesses that remained resilient over the past year and, in many cases, thrived," said Forbes Asia in a statement. Forbes Asia added that the financial service sector saw 18 companies in the list, which was more than double the eight that appeared in the previous year. The beauty industry saw 13 companies - mostly from South Korea - included in the list. "Other companies in the region have benefited from the gathering momentum in the segments in which they operate, such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and data centres," it added. In total, 69 companies returned to the 2025 list from the previous year The companies on this unranked list were selected based on a composite score using measures such as debt, sales and earnings-per-share growth over both the most recent fiscal one- and three-year periods, and the strongest one- and five-year average returns on equity. Aside from quantitative criteria, qualitative screens were applied, such as excluding companies with serious governance issues, questionable accounting practices, environmental concerns, management problems or legal troubles in recent years. The list uses annual results based on the latest publicly available figures as of July 7, 2025.

Thailand and Cambodia should reach common ground in peace talks by Aug 7, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Talks to resolve Thailand and Cambodia's border tensions are expected to be concluded by Thursday (Aug 7), says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said army generals of both countries are currently in Kuala Lumpur for a meeting coordinated by Malaysia. 'We extend our appreciation to the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces for helping to coordinate this meeting. 'We hope that some common ground facilitated by Malaysia can be reached before or on Aug 7, as the Defence Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand will be present to reach an agreement,' he said during Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 5). ALSO READ: Thailand, Cambodia show strong commitment towards peace, Chief of Defence Forces says Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS-Batang Sadong) had asked Anwar to clarify Malaysia's role in facilitating the peace negotiations and ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, which have reached an agreement to end their border conflict. Anwar also thanked Asean member states that provided support and the mandate for Malaysia to lead the ceasefire agreement. 'They all agreed to send their defense attachés to continue monitoring (the situation), and the meeting in Kuala Lumpur (will be conducted by) the Malaysian defence attachés with the presence of Asean (members') defence attachés. 'Both the United States and China will attend as observers only, but this is a Malaysian initiative fully supported by Asean,' he added. ALSO READ: Malaysia proposes Asean monitoring team for Thai-Cambodian border He also extended gratitude to both the Thai and Cambodian governments, which had expressed their positive commitment to finding a resolution. On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya chaired by Anwar. At the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also agreed to convene a General Border Committee Meeting as part of the ceasefire agreement.
