Keel laid for fourth ship in prestigious Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel programme
The ceremony was held on Monday and was graced by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, who laid the keel in a solemn and dignified tradition steeped in naval heritage.
The keel laying marks continued progress in the construction of seven NGOPVs, being designed and built entirely in-house by Goa Shipyard under a Rs 6,200 crore contract signed on March 30, 2023.
The vessels are tailored to the operational requirements of the Indian Navy and stand as a testament to India's maturing indigenous design and shipbuilding capabilities.
According to the Goa Shipyard statement, each vessel will be 114 metres in length, 14.6 metres in beam, with a displacement of 2,700 tonnes.
The ships will feature dual diesel propulsion with Controllable Pitch Propellers and be equipped with cutting-edge indigenous weapons and sensor suites.
Vice Admiral Swaminathan commended the Ministry of Defence, Indian Navy, and the Indian shipbuilding industry for their unwavering dedication to self-reliance in defence production.
He expressed satisfaction at the quality and pace of execution of critical naval projects, and praised the shipyard's relentless pursuit of excellence amid demanding timelines.
Chairman and Managing Director of Goa Shipyard, Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, highlighted the shipyard's accelerated growth trajectory, underpinned by its resolute focus on indigenisation, technology absorption, and quality execution.
He emphasised that Goa Shipyard's evolving capabilities have placed it at the forefront of India's naval shipbuilding map, with an impressive indigenous content in ongoing projects.
'These strategic orders reflect not just the scale of trust, but also the scope of responsibility placed upon us,' said the CMD, adding that 'GSL stands committed to delivering world-class warships built on the pillars of self-reliance, innovation, and national service.'
Goa Shipyard's shipbuilding activities are not only strengthening India's maritime security apparatus but are also significantly contributing to national economic growth by invigorating the local ecosystem, empowering MSMEs, and creating thousands of employment opportunities.
'The shipyard's expanding order book and indigenous manufacturing ethos are emblematic of a resurgent India taking confident strides towards 'Atmanirbharta',' the company statement added. (ANI)

'AICC tried to revive AJL': Rahul Gandhi's counsel in Herald case
Rahul Gandhi (File photo) NEW DELHI: All India Congress Committee (AICC) was not trying to sell assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the company which published National Herald newspaper, but rather trying to save the institution that was a part of the freedom movement, senior advocate R S Cheema, representing Rahul Gandhi , told a Delhi court Saturday. Cheema made his submissions before the court of special judge Vishal Gogne, which is hearing arguments on the point of cognisance of the chargesheet filed against Sonia Gandhi , Rahul and others in National Herald money laundering case. "In post-Independence period, it (AJL) was never a commercial institution. We (AICC) were trying to retrieve an institution which is part of the freedom movement heritage. The problem was not recovering the loan (given to AJL) but to revive it, to see that it comes back on the rails. AICC was not looking for profit from sales. This is a squinted version," Cheema said. According to ED, Sonia and Rahul, along with others and a private company, Young Indian Pvt Ltd, conspired to launder money by fraudulently usurping AJL's properties valued at over Rs 2,000 crore in exchange for a loan of Rs 90 crore. Cheema said ED's allegations were "crude lies". The senior advocate said ED made unwarranted inferences against Rahul by wrongly assuming that he was the person in-charge of AICC's affairs as its general secretary in 2010. According to the party constitution, AICC has several general secretaries at a point in time, and no one of them could be in-charge of its affairs, Cheema pointed out. The counsel further stated Sonia, then Congress president, was wrongly inferred as person in-charge of AICC when the loan was assigned to AJL. The arguments will continue against other accused, including Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd, on Monday.

Buenos Aires [Argentina], July 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed cooperation in the energy and critical minerals sectors with Argentine President Javier Milei, underlining India's growing energy and industrial needs while emphasising that Buenos Aires can serve as a 'reliable partner.' Addressing a briefing after the bilateral meeting between the two leaders, MEA's Secretary (East) P Kumaran emphasised that Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, such as lithium, copper, and rare earth elements, align with India's need for its clean energy transition and industrial growth. 'The two leaders also had an opportunity to discuss cooperation in the energy and critical mineral sectors. The Prime Minister underlined India's growing energy and industrial needs and emphasised that Argentina could serve as a reliable partner in supporting India's developmental journey,' Kumaran said. 'Argentina's rich reserves of critical minerals, including lithium, copper and rare earth elements, align with India's need for secure and sustainable resources to drive its clean energy transition and industrial growth,' he added. Kamaran also highlighted that Argentina, with its 2nd-largest shale gas and 4th-largest shale oil reserves, hold 'strong potential to become 'an important energy partner for India.' PM Modi, during the bilateral meeting, also highlighted India's strength in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, offering Argentina to increase cooperation in the sector by moving India from Annexe II to Annexe I of Argentina's pharmaceutical regulatory framework to facilitate smoother entry of Indian pharmaceutical products into the Argentine market. According to Argentina's pharmaceutical regulatory framework, countries are divided into two annexes. Countries on Annexe I usually have a smoother path into the Argentine market. 'Prime Minister highlighted India's strength in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, particularly the capacity to produce high-quality, affordable medicines. He discussed the possibility of India being moved from Annexe II to Annexe I of Argentina's pharmaceutical regulatory framework, which would facilitate smoother entry of Indian pharmaceutical products into the Argentine market. The Argentine side updated the Indian delegation on the fast-track approval process available for the import of Indian medicines,' P Kumaran said. 'The Indian side mentioned that this would significantly benefit the people of Argentina by improving access to affordable and life-saving medicine and reduce the cost of healthcare in Argentina,' he added. Argentina lithium reserve
Buenos Aires [Argentina], July 6 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday (local time) emphasised India's great interest in Argentina's lithium reserve, noting Indian public sector companies are 'working out the implementation of the investments' in the Latin Amercian country to produce, refine, and export minerals. Addressing a press conference, MEA's Secretary (East) P Kumaran noted the efforts of Coal India Limited and Khanij Bidesh India Limited to pick up critical minerals assets in other countries for India. 'Argentina is a part of the Lithium Triangle. It is of great interest to us. We had two Indian public sector companies, Coal India Limited and a consortium called KABIL, which is specifically tasked with picking up critical minerals and assets outside India. They have signed five concession agreements and are working on finalizing investments and working out the implementation of the investments in such a way that minerals can be produced here, refined and taken to India for various purposes and are working on finalising investments to implement them in a manner that allows minerals to be produced, refined, and exported,' Kumaran said. MEA's Secretary East also noted that two private sector companies owned by Indians have also invested in lithium concession in Argentina and hoped for more cooperation between the two nations. 'There are two private sector companies: one from India, called Greenco, and another Indian-owned company based in the UAE, World Metal Alloys, which is also invested in lithium concessions in Argentina. Hopefully, we will have more cooperation in the coming years,' Kumaran said.
