Indian sensation Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has become the new India No. 1 in classical chess after winning the UzChess Cup Masters tournament. The 19-year-old defeated Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov with the Black pieces in the final round to clinch the title.
Praggnanandhaa becomes new India No. 1
Thanks to this big win, Praggnanandhaa has now jumped to No. 4 in the live world rankings with an impressive Elo rating of 2778.3. He is now ahead of fellow Indians Dommaraju Gukesh, who is ranked 5th with a rating of 2776.6, and Arjun Erigaisi, who is at 6th place with 2775.7.
The five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway is still at the top of the chart with a rating of 2839.2. He is followed by American grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura (2807) and Fabiano Caruana (2784.2).

After Praggnanandhaa clinched his third title of the year, he took to social media to thank everyone for all the support he received before the event.
'Wrapped up the #UzChessCup Masters with a win in the final round and wins in tie breaks. Tiebreaks were crazy indeed. Grateful for all the support that I have received so far. Onto my next challenge to Croatia,' Praggnanandhaa wrote in a post on X after his victory in Tashkent.

In another post, Praggnanandhaa thanked former world champion Viswanathan Anand, who had congratulated the Indian youngster on his Uzbekistan Cup win. Anand said that out of all of Praggnanandhaa's wins this year, the one in Uzbekistan seemed the least likely, but given the way he made a comeback, he fully deserved to be World No. 4 and India's No. 1 player.

However he defeated Arjun Erigaisi and today in the crucial match defeated Nodirbek Abdussattorov to tie for first place. In an impressive demonstration of character he won his third tiebreak of the year as well.

After a record-breaking win in the campaign opener, the Indian senior women's team will look to continue the winning momentum in the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers when it takes on Timor Leste on Sunday at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium. The five-team Group B is currently led by Iraq, which is on four points after a 5-2 victory over Mongolia and a 0-0 draw with Timor Leste. India, which beat Mongolia 13-0, and Thailand, which beat Timor Leste 4-0, are on three points each. Despite Timor Leste being ranked 158th, 32 places below Mongolia, Indian coach Crispin Chettri believed that the Southeast Asian side would pose a stronger challenge. Having watched all teams in action after the first two matchdays, there's now a much clearer assessment of all the remaining three opponents. 'Timor Leste are a better organised team than Mongolia, and I feel they are better organised defensively than Iraq as well. They prefer going for counter-attacks. They don't mind keeping the ball either. So, in patches, they are good. But as Thailand dominated the match completely, we can't say much about their attack. But they have got pace in their team as well,' said Chettri. Chettri and his coaching staff were in attendance on Thursday as Timor Leste restricted 46th-ranked Thailand to four goals. India, ranked 70, has never faced Timor Leste before. Coached by Indonesian Emral bin Bustamam, Timor Leste has been more active in international football as compared to Mongolia.
