Andrew Tulloch turned down Mark Zuckerberg's $1 billion job offer. His LinkedIn profile is viral
We are talking about Andrew Tulloch, an Australian computer scientist who turned down Mark Zuckerberg's job offer that would have potentially earned him as much as $1.5 billion over a period of six years, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Who is Andrew Tulloch?
Andrew Tulloch is a machine learning expert and co-founder of Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab – a company that aims to take AI beyond chatbots.
He has been in the news ever since he was revealed to be the man who turned down Meta's staggering nine-figure offer. The Journal report noted that even in Silicon Valley, where big paychecks don't raise eyebrows, it is rare for someone to turn down a nine-figure salary.
People familiar with the matter said that the $1.5 billion figure is contingent upon bonuses and stock performance.
However, Meta spokesman Andy Stone called the description of the offer 'inaccurate and ridiculous'. Stone added that any compensation package is predicated on a stock rising, per the report.
A report in Wired earlier stated that Zuckerberg had been trying to recruit researchers from Thinking Machines Lab for Meta's new superintelligence unit. However, no one at TML has accepted his offers so far.
Andrew Tulloch's viral LinkedIn profile
A screenshot of Tulloch's work experience, listed on his LinkedIn profile, has been going viral on social media.
The screenshot charts his dream trajectory from Goldman Sachs to Meta to OpenAI and finally Thinking Machines Lab.
On his own website, Tulloch said he attended 'graduate school in mathematical statistics at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with distinction (the highest grade).' He also holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney.
Between his bachelor's and master's degrees, Tulloch worked at Facebook. 'Before graduate school, I worked on machine learning systems at Facebook from April 2012 until starting graduate school in October 2013, working on all aspects of the advertising machine learning platform, from feature engineering to the inference platform to the real-time serving system,' he explained.

ChatGPT To No Longer Tell Users To Break Up With Partners After Update: 'It Shouldn't Give...'
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has led to people using the technology to ease their workload as well as seek relationship advice. Taking guidance about matters of the heart from a machine that is designed to be agreeable, however, comes with a problem. It often advises users to quit the relationship and walk away. Keeping the problem in mind, ChatGPT creator, OpenAI, on Monday (Aug 4) announced a series of changes it is rolling out to better support users during difficult times and to offer relatively safe guidance. "ChatGPT shouldn't give you an answer. It should help you think it through - asking questions, weighing pros and cons," OpenAI said, as per The Telegraph. "When you ask something like 'Should I break up with my boyfriend?' ChatGPT shouldn't give you an answer. It should help you think it through, asking questions, weighing pros and cons. New behavior for high-stakes personal decisions is rolling out soon." "We'll keep tuning when and how they show up so they feel natural and helpful," the company said. OpenAI added that it will constitute an advisory group containing experts in mental health, youth development, and human-computer interaction. 'Sycophantic ChatGPT' While AI cannot directly cause a breakup, the chatbots do feed into a user's bias to keep the conversation flowing. It is a problem that has been highlighted by none other than OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In May, Mr Altman admitted that ChatGPT had become overly sycophantic and "annoying" after users complained about the behaviour. The issue arose after the 4o model was updated and improved in both intelligence and personality, with the company hoping to improve overall user experience. The developers, however, may have overcooked the politeness of the model, which led to users complaining that they were talking to a 'yes-man' instead of a rational, AI chatbot. "The last couple of GPT-4o updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying (even though there are some very good parts of it)," Mr Altman wrote. "We are working on fixes asap, some today and some this week. At some point will share our learnings from this, it's been interesting." While ChatGPT may have rolled out the new update, making it less agreeable, experts maintain that AI can offer general guidance and support, but it lacks the nuance and depth required to address the complex, unique needs of individuals in a relationship.

OpenAI introduces free customizable AI models: Price, features and more
OpenAI announced two new open-weight AI language models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, on Tuesday, August 5. These models offer similar capabilities to the company's O-series, as reported by TechCrunch. This marks the first time since OpenAI rolled out GPT-2 in 2019. OpenAI releases two new AI models.(Reuters) The company stated that the text-only models have been specially designed to be used as lower-cost options, which can be easily run and customized by developers and researchers. OpenAI releases lower-cost models OpenAI's latest release comes after tech giants like Meta and Mistral AI, backed by Microsoft, as well as Chinese startup DeepSeek, unveiled their open-weight models in the past few years. According to CNBC, the AI model is considered open weight when all its parameters or elements that have been utilized to improve the output and prediction at the time of training are publicly made available. Such models not only offer control and transparency in the respective field, but also remain quite different from the open-source models, where the full source code is made available to customers to modify and use. OpenAI President Greg Brockman said it is "exciting" to see the developing ecosystem and that the company is looking forward to contributing to it. "...we are excited to contribute to that and really push the frontier and then see what happens from there,' the outlet quoted Brockman as saying. The two models, which have been dubbed "state-of-the-art," remain freely available to download from the Hugging Face platform. For this project, OpenAI partnered with Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Cerebras, and Groq to see how the models work on various chips. In a statement, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that OpenAI has shown "what could be built on Nvidia AI — and now they're advancing innovation in open-source software.' During a briefing, the company highlighted that its new open models are capable of sending complex queries to AI models in the cloud. This means whenever it is unable to perform a specific task, then the developers will be able to connect it to the more capable closed models of the company, per TechCrunch. The two new AI models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, underwent a coding test on Codeforces and scored 2622 and 2516. They have outperformed DeepSeek's R1 model. The release of OpenAI's open weight models comes after the company delayed the launch on a repeated basis. Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed in an X post that it required extra time to 'run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas.' FAQs: 1. How to try new OpenAI models? As per the company, users can download them from Hugging Face and GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. These are being made available to run on PCs via LM Studio and Ollama. 2. What are the new AI models from OpenAI? These include open-weight AI language models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. 3. What's the price for new OpenAI models? They are free to download and users can customize them accordingly.
