The New Honda Prelude Makes Goodwood Debut as a Sleek Hybrid Coupe

Miami Herald3 days ago
At the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, we saw a wide variety of automotive spectacles, from brand-new EVs to hypercar classics, all as scarce as hens' teeth. But one of our favorite cars to make an appearance was a name we haven't heard in decades: the Honda Prelude.
At the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, surrounded by everything from ludicrous hypercars to blisteringly quick EVs like the Ioniq 6 N, one coupe stood out. It didn't catch our eye for being the fastest or flashiest, but for something more niche: familiarity. After years of concept models and rumors, the Honda Prelude is back, and it made a quiet but confident appearance in the English countryside.
Many modern reboots lean heavily on name recognition but lose the original spirit somewhere along the way. Honda avoided that trap. The new Prelude is sleek, low-slung, and attractive from every angle -just like its predecessors. Its long hood and sloping roofline echo past Preludes, while sharp LED headlights that connect at the front, a rear lightbar, and flush door handles signal its forward focus. The show car wore Boost Blue Pearl, a bold color borrowed from the Civic Type R, with some black accents to emphasize its sporty nature.

Honda hasn't revealed exact specs, but the next-gen Prelude will be a hybrid sports car, pairing a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. We expect something similar to the Civic Si's 200-hp four-cylinder engine, but only time will tell. Further sticking to its roots, Honda confirmed it'll stay front-wheel-drive. Unfortunately, it seems Honda won't offer the new Prelude with a manual transmission at all. Inside, it shares much of its layout and design with the Civic. The biggest difference is a set of Prelude logos stitched into the headrests.
Before disappearing in 2001, the Honda Prelude had gone through five generations. This new model doesn't just borrow the name for nostalgia's sake. It's Honda leaning into what made the original so special, and giving today's drivers something that's become increasingly rare: a sleek, sporty coupe built for people who love driving. Although rear-wheel-drive contenders like the Toyota GR86 might outperform it, we still applaud Honda's passion project aimed at enthusiasts. In a world flooded with crossovers, it's refreshing to see a car like this make a comeback.

Honda & Nissan in Discussion to Co-Develop Advanced Auto Software

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. HMC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. NSANY are in discussions to jointly develop and share a foundational software platform for advanced vehicle control systems, per sources. The move is part of their effort to catch up with leading U.S. and Chinese automakers in the growing field of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).The two companies aim to introduce vehicles utilizing the new software in the latter half of the decade. As SDVs become more prominent in the global automotive landscape, they require massive data inputs for both development and ongoing operation, making strategic collaboration crucial for accelerating innovation and reducing and several Chinese automakers currently lead in the SDV space, while Toyota and Mazda are also considering adopting shared software strategies. Honda and Nissan's ongoing discussions mark the latest attempt at collaboration, following the end of previous merger talks in February after Nissan declined to become a Honda initiating a feasibility study in March 2024, both automakers have been evaluating potential collaborations in software development and EV charging infrastructure. However, Honda has indicated that it still plans to launch electric vehicles equipped with its proprietary software beginning in separate news, Nissan may begin manufacturing pickup trucks for Honda at its U.S. plants under a proposed strategic agreement. This would allow Honda to diversify its U.S. vehicle lineup, where it currently has limited presence in the pickup segment and mitigate the financial impact of new tariffs. For Nissan, the deal could improve factory utilization, which remains below break-even levels, and help offset declining sales due to its lack of competitive hybrid two companies are currently discussing this potential partnership. Both automakers view the United States as a crucial market, though recent tariff increases on Japanese imports have intensified pressure. The levies are projected to reduce Honda's operating profit by ¥650 billion and Nissan's by up to ¥450 billion in fiscal 2025. A manufacturing agreement between the two could enhance profitability for both firms. 'Looked Forever For This Color:' Ohio Woman Buys Sonic Pearl Grey Honda Civic. Then She Notices Something Off About Her Mirrors

A Honda Civic owner on TikTok is warning other buyers to steer clear of the Sonic Pearl Gray paint after the finish on her car started peeling just a year and a half after purchase. Her video, which has been viewed more than 220,000 times, includes footage of the damaged areas. It has sparked a flurry of responses from others reporting the same issue, with some stating that it's part of a broader paint problem that Honda hasn't fully addressed. Peeling Back the Paint Complaint Creator Cat (@melancatly) explained that she intentionally bypassed newer Civic models because she preferred the more sporty styling of the previous generation. After an extended search, she located the 2020 Civic in the desired finish at a Honda dealership and purchased it used with around 40,000 miles on the odometer. Now, at 62,000 miles, she's owned the car for a year and a half and is paying roughly $400 a month for it, along with a warranty she expected would offer some peace of mind. According to her video, that sense of security began to erode about six months into ownership, when she noticed the paint starting to peel on both side mirrors and door handles. She brought the issue to the dealership, where a staff member acknowledged having heard of similar complaints, not just with Sonic Gray Pearl, but also with Honda's white paint finishes. However, she was told that her warranty didn't cover paint problems. After following up with Honda corporate, she was informed that a claim would be opened, but weeks passed without an update. When the company finally responded, she says she was told that no assistance would be provided because the paint issue wasn't reported back in 2020, the year the car was manufactured, even though she didn't own the car at the time. The frustration, she said, stems from both the cosmetic degradation of a vehicle she was excited to own and from a manufacturer's process that seems to leave used car buyers with few options when problems emerge after the fact. Honda's Track Record with Paint Problems Honda has faced persistent criticism over paint durability on several models, most notably tied to specific 'pearlescent' finishes. A class-action lawsuit filed in November 2024 in the US District Court for the Central District of California alleges that the 'three-stage' white paints used on models such as the Civic, Fit, HR‑V, Odyssey, and Pilot routinely peel, bubble, and flake due to poor adhesion between layers. That suit specifically named paints such as White Diamond Pearl and White Orchid Pearl, adding that the defect was likely present from production onward and would manifest during normal use. In 2020, Honda settled a previous class-action lawsuit regarding peeling Orchid White Pearl paint on 2016-2018 Civics and 2017 CR‑Vs. The settlement included a silent warranty extension and reimbursed costs for affected owners. Honda's standard warranties typically exclude damage to paint and trim that isn't a manufacturer's defect; moreover, coverage is often limited to corrosion and rust rather than aesthetic issues unless reported within narrow timeframes. In practice, this means that unless the issue adversely impacts structural integrity or is caught early, owners are often left paying out of pocket. As for Sonic Gray Pearl, the paint finish spotlighted in the TikTok , there is currently no known active class-action lawsuit for this color. However, thousands of owner reports—particularly from 10th‑gen Civic owners—describe premature peeling on mirror caps, door handles, and hatch trim in the exact same gray finish.
