5 people charged in 'vicious' brawl in Cincinnati that sparked safety debate in the city

Independent6 days ago
Five people have been charged in a bloody, late-night brawl in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend that involved dozens of people and raised concerns about crime in the Ohio city.
A video of the fight early Saturday shows a crowd milling about before several people start throwing punches. One man falls to the ground and was repeatedly punched and kicked by a bystanders. Another woman is punched in the face and falls to the ground, lying motionless before another woman helps her. She can be seeing bleeding from the mouth.
'I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred downtown,' Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said in a statement. 'It is horrifying to watch, and this is unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community.'
Three days after the brawl, the city has released little information about it other than to say it was not related to a Cincinnati Reds game, a basketball tournament or a jazz festival that attracted over 150,000 people to the city. It said five people have been charged in the brawl but only two had been arrested as of Tuesday.
Police Chief Teresa Theetge said more people would be charged, warning that anyone who 'put their hands on another individual during this incident in an attempt to cause harm will face consequences." She also suggested some bar owners may be culpable for over-serving participants in the confrontation, which occurred about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Theetge appeared on the defensive during the news conference, complaining the brawl was getting all the attention and 'undoing all the good stuff that happened this weekend.' She also complained that bystanders took many videos but that only one person called 911. Police responded to the scene after the fight was over, about six minutes after the call.
'For us to get one phone call about this incident is unacceptable in this city,' she said.
The video of the brawl quickly turned political. Vice President JD Vance 's half brother Cory Bowman, who is running to be Cincinnati's mayor, flagged the fight on social media on Saturday and blamed city leadership for creating an unsafe environment.
'For many, these images sparked shock and disbelief,' he said in a statement. 'For residents within our city limits, they serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing crime and lawlessness we've had to endure this summer.'
Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights at U.S. Justice Department, posted on X above an image of the video that 'EVERY American is entitled to the equal protection of our laws. Federal law enforcement is on it and we will ensure that justice is done.'
The videos also became a flashpoint among conservatives online, despite a lack of available details about the incident. Political influencers pointed to it as an example of apparent Black-on-white violence and criticized media coverage of the fight.
'Why zero stories?' billionaire X owner Elon Musk wrote on his social platform on Sunday. Grok, Musk's AI chatbot, fanned the flames, claiming in an X post the same day that the 'media blackout' of the story was 'telling.'

Fox News slams Keir Starmer's leadership in UK as they issue urgent 'Big Brother is watching' alert

A Fox News correspondent compared the UK to George Orwell's novel 1984 as they said "Big Brother is Watching" Fox News has aired an urgent alert in a mortifying dig at Keir Starmer's leadership. The American news channel caused some controversy when they declared "Big Brother is Watching" on Sunday night's Fox Business show, The Bottom Line. ‌ This is a reference to George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, where the Ministry of Truth is a government agency responsible for propaganda, historical revisionism, and manipulating information to align with the Party's narrative. The Fox News anchor declared: "1984 called and it wants its Ministry of Truth back. ‌ "The UK has created an elite police unit known as The National Intelligence Investigations Team dedicated to monitoring anti-migrant social media posts. Leaders claim its purpose is to detect early signs of potential unrest." ‌ The channel then showed images of ongoing protests in Epping as tensions rise over migrants being housed in hotels within the area, the Express reports. The report comes amid increased worries surrounding free speech and growing disorder in the UK. ‌ An elite team of police officers are set to watch over social media for anti-migrant sentiment amid fears of summer riots. ‌ Detectives will be taken from forces across the country to team up in a new investigation that will identify early signs of potential civil unrest. During Donald Trump's visit to the UK last week, Keir Starmer assured the press that we have had "free speech here for a very long time and we're very proud of that". The Fox News correspondents were joined by Public News Founder Michael Shellenberger. ‌ Host Guy Benson said: "Michael, it's true that the UK and the West has a fairly robust tradition when it comes to free speech but i'm not so sure that's true anymore. "There is story after story about people being thrown behind bars in the UK - even for tweets they have deleted with longer prison sentences than people who have committed actual physical violent crimes." ‌ Michael replied: "It's an incredible story. There is a woman that has been in prison for 31 months which is four months longer than a child rapist. All she did was have a tweet up for four hours that she ended up taking down. "This is a sweeping crackdown on free speech in Great Britain. We have not seen anything like this for hundreds of years. Keep in mind they were arresting 30 people a day for wrong speech in Britain before this. "Now, they have a special police task force to constantly monitor social media including X formerly Twitter and they can stop content based on age verification." ‌ ‌ He added: "They are not going to allow people to criticise mass immigration. They're going to call it Islamphobia. A hate crime and prevent it. George Orwell perfectly predicted this in 1984 when he wrote his book in the mid 40s." Michael went on to explain that as the UK continues to increase social media surveillance it is effectively taking place worldwide including within the EU and the US. He explained: "It's happening everywhere and has accelerated since Trump was elected. So it's the EU, it's Britain, it's Ireland - they want to read your private text messages. Canada, Brazil - the strategy here is to make it so the social media companies will censor this content for everybody." ‌ Michael also alleged the heavy censorship that has been politicised due to the growing support of right-wing parties. Further protests have erupted across the UK as migrants are relocated to more affluent London areas. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Men, thought to be asylum seekers, were captured on film entering the hotel from a bus in the early hours of Saturday, clutching what appeared to be brown envelopes and dressed in similar attire. A representative for Tower Hamlets Council has earlier verified that the Britannia Hotel is set to "provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers".

Outraged CEO shows Daily Mail the hellish truth about downtown Cincinnati in wake of man-on-woman brawl that shocked America

An entrepreneur who is fleeing downtown Cincinnati in the wake of an appalling mass brawl showed Daily Mail the abject squalor that has driven him out. Victor Louis, founder and CEO of local firm One Logistics Network, took the Mail on a grim tour of the beleaguered city on Monday. He said Cincinnati's woke leaders were entirely to blame for its demise. The city has been thrust into the national spotlight following the mass brawl that erupted, with a man and a woman being violently assaulted during a fight that saw the woman beaten black and blue by a man. Further outrage ensued when Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge - who is being sued for alleged anti-white racism - scolded journalists for taking the viral clips 'out of context' Louis told Daily Mail that the brawl was the straw that broke the camel's back for his company after he and his staffers witnessed escalating violence and horror. He said that: 'Had [the brawl] not happened, I don't know if anybody would believe what's been going on. In one sense it is an isolated incident but things have led up to this.' Cincinnati is home to eight Fortune 500 headquarters - but during rush hour on Monday morning its streets were near-desolate. And the people that Daily Mail did see paint a clear picture of why Louis and others are so angry. Just a few hundred feet from the grandiose and historic City Hall a young woman, around 20-years-old, was seen injecting herself with with a syringe. Next to her, a mans arm gushed with blood, having also just shot up in Cincinnati's downtown - with no consequences. The brazen display was not a surprise for Louis. 'That's in broad daylight, right by City Hall. Literally someone can look out their window and see this, and nothing is being done', he told the Daily Mail. 'If you can't fix that, why do you think crime circulates. And that was right in front of us, there is no hiding, that girl was also very young.' He continued: 'Nobody is walking the beat, those people are camped out there. That was blatant, and they aren't even hiding it.' Other Cincinnati vagrants were seen smoking from glass pipes commonly used to get high on crack, meth or fentanyl. In one particularly jarring moment, a woman sat on a park bench injected herself with drugs in full view of churchgoers gathering outside their house of worship for a service. Louis had issued a letter to local leaders last week after the viral clip of the brawl made headlines, saying he was officially done with the downtown district - and was moving his business, which employs 35 people, to the suburbs. 'It's been issue after issue', he added. Louis said his employees no longer feel safe working in the area, adding that: 'They don't want to come down to work here here anymore'. The most recent sight to sicken Louis was that of a homeless person who yanked down their pants on a sidewalk near his office to defecate. Others regularly tote weapons while strutting around streets which were once home to bustling shops, offices, restaurants and bars. The 39-year-old added: 'The city doesn't control violent crime, and they can't maintain litter, and they can't maintain vagrancy. Guess what? Those things just run rampant. And that's what we are seeing around the city. 'When you can't fix these problems like littering and drug abuse, you're not going to be able to fix violent crime. Why ask people to play chess when they can't even play checkers?' Just last week a woman was shot in the neck and leg in the Over the Rhine neighborhood in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Before that, hundreds of youths had swamped a 4th of July celebration and burned a police officer with a firework. Louis also mentioned the killing of fellow Cincinnati business owner Patrick Heringer. He was murdered in his own home in the city in June, while protecting his family from an intruder who stabbed him multiple times. Mordecia Black, 38, was indicted in his death and other charges including aggravated burglary and felonious assault. It later emerged that Black was a convicted felon and had cut his ankle monitor off earlier this year before vanishing from a halfway house. He had managed to evade police for months before allegedly killing Heringer. In an open letter Louis wrote last week, he added: 'A consistent decline in the conditions for doing business in the city over the past several years has made our continued presence untenable,' he wrote. 'My employees have concerns about their safety and do not feel valued for their contributions to the city.' Louis is not alone in his concerns. The Cincinnati Restaurant Industry clubbed together to issue their own statement on the brawl and the spat of other issues facing the area. They said: 'The video circulating from that night is disturbing, and like many in this city, we are calling for accountability and decisive action. 'Our businesses represent thousands of employees and serve tens of thousands of guests each week. 'We've invested heavily in this city - not just financially, but with our time, presence and long-term commitment to Cincinnati's success. 'But we cannot carry this alone. We need clear, proactive, and correctives measures from our city leadership. This is not a moment for vague promises or delayed responses. 'Our community is asking for a real plan, one that addresses this incident and the broader safety concerns that have been raised for months.' On Friday, Mayor Aftab Pureval said that he would be increasing law enforcement patrols in the city. On Monday the Mail didn't see any police presence in the downtown area, where open drug abuse was the order of the day. Pureval added: 'There is no place for violent crime in Cincinnati, whether it's a fight or gun violence. 'We will pursue those responsible and we will hold them accountable no matter who they are.' In her first remarks since the assault, Holly, who is still severely bruised, said it has left her with trauma to the brain. In an emotional message, she said: 'I want to say thank you to everyone for all of the love and support. 'It's definitely what's keeping me going. And you have just brought back faith in humanity. 'It's been very, very hard, and I'm still recovering. I still have a very bad brain trauma. God bless you all. Thank you.' Political commentator Benny Johnson shared the video to his X profile after he organized an online fundraiser for her, which has already raised $168,000. According to the page Holly is a single working-class mother and is out of work due to her injuries as well as living in an undisclosed location due to threats on her life. The update from Holly comes after a fourth person was arrested in connection with the fight. Dominique Kittle, 37, was taken into police custody on Friday night and was charged with felonious assault and aggravated riot, his bond was set at $150,000. He appeared in court on Saturday where his lawyer told the judge that suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, according to WLWT. Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, were taken into custody earlier this week after the ordeal, which JD Vance waded in on. Matthew and Merriweather were initially charged with aggravated riot and assault over the brawl. New footage has also emerged showing the moments leading up to the attack, with one of the men who police said was a victim using racial slurs. The video, obtained by The Enquirer, shows the unknown individual say: 'Get him! Get that little n*****.' Two black men appeared to try and talk to the man to calm him down before the brawl starts. Matthews' attorney Brandon Fox released the video.

Russian influencers pose for social media video in front of burning oil depot hit by Ukraine strike... and are made to pay the price by Putin's officials

Two Russian young women and a man were ordered to make a humbling public apology for a video posing with a burning oil depot after a major Ukrainian oil strike in Vladimir Putin 's favourite resort. A drone exploded the military-linked Rosneft oil depot in Sochi after 30 explosions thundered over the Black Sea city. TikTokers Dasha Vladimirovna Loskutova, 21, and Karina Evgenyevna Oshurkova, 20 today, were filmed rapping in front of the burning facility. They and an unidentified man were seen as glorying in the Ukrainian strike which Putin's air defences failed to prevent, and are now likely to face fines of up to £280. An investigation is underway which could see them face harsher punishments. A major search involving police and the Russian national guard was launched after the video appeared. Under questioning after the three were detained, Karina was asked: 'Do you repent for what you did?' She replied: 'Yes.' Asked 'Do you admit your guilt?' - she replied: 'I admit it.' Then they were forced to record a squirming police station mea culpa saying: 'We sincerely apologise for filming the video against the backdrop of a fire and posting it on a social network. 'We did not post the video with the intention of insulting or offending anyone. 'We pledge not to make such mistakes again…. 'We are ready to be punished under Russian law.' They shot a video to the track Crimson Dawn by singer Endshpil, a Russian rapper. Kremlin moral guardian Yekaterina Mizulina, 40, head of Russia's Safe Internet League, said: 'Young people are filming content against the backdrop of drones flying into Sochi at night…. 'I wonder what's wrong with the instinct for self-preservation? A handout photograph released by the Mayor of Sochi Andrey Proshunin in his Telegram channel on August 3, 2025, shows firefighters working at a fuel depot outside Sochi, after an overnight Ukrainian drone attack 'Don't they understand that this is simply dangerous?' But the real reason for their arrest is the potential glamourising of a Ukrainian strike in Russia's largest holiday resort.
