Kevin Durant trade to Rockets part of NBA-record 7-team deal: Sources

New York Times8 hours ago
The Kevin Durant trade will include more than just the 2014 NBA MVP.
The Houston Rockets and the Phoenix Suns have agreed to the terms of a deal that will include an NBA-record seven teams, league sources said. The trade for Durant, which the Rockets and Suns agreed to in June but have not yet finalized, will now incorporate the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday night that a potential record-setting deal was being discussed. The move will consolidate several previously reported trades, including the Durant one, into one megadeal. Six players who were in the NBA last season will change teams.
Durant will head from Phoenix to Houston. Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks will go from Houston to Phoenix. The Hawks will send Daeqwon Plowden to the Suns and will receive David Roddy from the Rockets. Atlanta will also sign and trade Clint Capela to Houston as part of the transaction, league sources said.

All other elements of the deal are trades of draft picks that are already agreed upon but have yet to be finalized.
Because of quirks in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, teams had to wait until at least July 6 to make trades like these official, even if they agreed on the details of a deal earlier.
Previously, the most franchises to participate in the same deal were the six from last summer when Klay Thompson went from the Warriors to the Dallas Mavericks. In 2021, five teams agreed to an exchange that included Russell Westbrook going from the Washington Wizards to the Lakers.
This story will be updated.

LeBron James Reacts to Bronny James' Dunk in Lakers Summer League Game

LeBron James Reacts to Bronny James' Dunk in Lakers Summer League Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Lakers returned to Summer League action on Sunday with their highly anticipated matchup against the Miami Heat, and all eyes were on Bronny James as he made his 2025 Summer League debut. After sitting out Saturday's opener against the Golden State Warriors, James stepped into the lineup looking to make an early impact. Advertisement James' rookie campaign was a learning curve, marked by split time between the Lakers' main roster and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. He appeared in 27 NBA games last season, averaging 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists in limited minutes, but found his rhythm in the G League, posting 21.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 11 games. With a full year of pro experience under his belt, many fans expect the 20-year-old guard to earn a bigger role in his sophomore season. He wasted no time showing that progress on Sunday. Just seconds after tipoff, James picked off a pass, sprinted the length of the floor, and threw down a powerful dunk to open the scoring for Los Angeles — a highlight that quickly made the rounds online. Advertisement The dunk caught the attention of none other than his father, LeBron James, who proudly reposted the video to his Instagram story. Lakers Fans Are Saying the Same Thing About Bronny James and Dalton Knecht

Lakers Fans Are Saying the Same Thing About Bronny James and Dalton Knecht originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Dalton Knecht and Bronny James were selected by the Los Angeles Lakers last year, and are two of the most discussed players from the 2024 NBA Draft. Knecht, the sharpshooter out of Tennessee, went 17th overall, while James had to wait until the second round to hear his name called, going 55th overall. Advertisement Both entered this year's Summer League eager to prove themselves after struggling for consistent minutes in their rookie seasons. This week, though, the two young guards have delivered contrasting performances under the bright lights of Summer League play. That was on display Sunday against the Miami Heat. Los Angeles Lakers first round draft pick Dalton Knecht (4) and second round draft pick Bronny James (9)Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports Knecht, expected to showcase his scoring upside, struggled in the Lakers' opening loss to the Golden State Warriors, finishing with just 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting, including 0-of-6 from three, in 30 minutes of action. James, on the other hand, sat out the first game but returned with an immediate spark against the Miami Heat on Sunday. Advertisement He made his presence felt right away, stealing the ball in the opening seconds before racing down the court for a dunk to score the Lakers' first points. By halftime, James had racked up 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from deep in just 11 minutes. Fans wasted no time drawing comparisons between the two second-year teammates: 'Bronny leaping knecht already,' one fan wrote. 'How is Bronny James already better than knecht 😭' another fan added. 'Knecht has played double the minutes as Bronny and yet still [expletive] on the court,' a third fan posted. Advertisement 'dude dalton knecht is horrible … bronny might literally be a better player than him right now man,' another fan remarked. 'Bronny > Dalton Knecht,' one fan simply said. 'Bronny looks great while Knecht looks terrible lol,' another fan mentioned. It's only early July, but the hot takes show just how closely Lakers fans are watching these two prospects. MLB announces news on Padres' Jason Adam

The San Diego Padres will be represented on the mound in Atlanta in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game by a relief pitcher. Some might think Robert Suarez, and some would be wrong. It is none other than Jason Adam, who has very much seen a return to form since his return to San Diego last summer in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Advertisement In the 2025 season, Adam has been brilliant out of the Padre bullpen, holding a 6-3 win-loss record in 43.2 innings pitched with 51 strikeouts and a 1.65 ERA. Adam will be one of three Padres representing the team at the All-Star Game, along with Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, the latter of which is the National League's starting third baseman. This is Adam's first career All-Star selection, and since his major league debut in 2018 with the Kansas City Royals, Adam has recorded 25 wins, a 2.71 career ERA, 370 strikeouts, and 24 saves. After spending his rookie year with the Royals, he was then traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2019 season, before spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons in the Windy City with the Chicago Cubs, and would then spend the next three years in Tampa with the Rays, solidifying his bullpen production before being traded in the middle of the 2024 season to San Diego, all leading up to the 2025 season where it seems that this is the Omaha native's breakout season. The 2025 MLB All-Star Game will be on Tuesday, July 15.
